Will Morocco and Polisario go to war? | Inside Story

A thirty-year old ceasefire is over in the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
That's according to the pro-independence Polisario Front.
It says Moroccan troops have launched an attack in the region.
Morocco's military says it has only set-up a "security cordon" after elements of the Polisario front blocked traffic on the only road linking it Mauritania and the rest of Africa.
So, could this be the end of the ceasefire in Western Sahara?
Presenter: Bernard Smith
Guests
Sidi Omar, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations in New York
Yasmine Hasnaoui, North Africa Specialist and Board member of the Institute of Saharan Studies Al Andalous
Riccardo Fabiani, Project Director covering North Africa at the International Crisis Group.

Also I really don’t understand algeria. If the sahrawis you fooled to leave their land are your brothers. Why let them live in those conditions? A gas and oil rich country. Instead of weapons give them roads, electricity, a way to make a living etc. It is 45 years.

@Brahim Saad I dont think thats the reason. A lot of people think the sahara desert makes a lot of money. But phosphate is not gas or oil. Morocco is losing money on the sahara. Not that it's a problem. Every country has regions that make more money than others. Morocco has to invest more in tourism etc in the region to diversify and generate more revenue. I think the biggest reason for the algerian regime is the deep hate for morocco, because of the sand war and what happened after. While king Mohamed V and Hassan 2 died and there are other leaders in morocco, in algeria everything is kind of the same. Their generals reach ages the japanese would be jealous of. This is a bit naive, but maybe solutions can be found after this generation of algerian generals die.

@Brahim Saad Haha there is a joke about this. Dont exactly remember but something like this. A man went to another man and told him ask me for something and I will give it to you and I will give your brother double of that. So the man replied make me blind from one eye haha. Algeria is willing to lose sight from one eye for morocco to become blind. Thats sadly the situation we are in right now.

@karimothadon There is some truth to this. Its getting better but slowly, there is progress. But why now and not earlier I ask? Either way better late than never. Situation in Algeria and Mauritania is the same. I hope the whole maghreb region one day will have access to basic needs like education, healthcare, clean drinking water etc.

Just because you destroyed the Songhai Empire doesn't mean you were an empire. You need criteria to be called an "empire" and you don't meet any. To begin with, there is not a single Moroccan construction in Western Sahara, Mali or Mauritania or in the Sahara annexed by France to Algeria, nor palaces, mosques or cities, not even a Moroccan cemetery , not a coin found in its sands. No written record of any administration whatsoever, no taxes paid, just gratuitous allegations of religious "allegiance" to the Commander of the Believers on the part of tribal leaders who in no way commit the entire population. The only relationship you had with Africa was commercial and especially the massive importation of unfortunate black slaves for 12 centuries until the 20th century. Stop looking in an illusory past for the glory you don't have in these times when the whole world of libidinous old perverts is pouring out on your wives and your children.

Unfortunately, Polisario killed a lot of the Sahraoui people that wanted to go back. - The people living in Tindouf were never kicked out of there houses.

The opening of consulates will continue in the Moroccan Sahara and the Mauritanian passage is now secure, it is the only tangible thing. Despite the billions invested, Algeria pays the price for an economic and political crisis, what it invested against Morocco, it is suffering the consequences today. Quite ironic.

France dominates Morocco economically, politically, militarily and socially. French Foreign Affair was recently in Rabat. He gave the green light for Morocco to attack Guergarat and Morocco as usual implemented the order knowing that France will back it in the Security Council. Also the African countries that opened consulates in occupied Western Sahara are all anthenas of France in Africa, and Emirates and other Gulf monarchies are just Israeli and US puppets. French Morocco is just the backyard of France. Simple as that.

Compare the Algerian-Polisarian governance of Tindouf to the Moroccan cities of Laayoune or Dakhla, to realize the real intentions of the 2 camps.

@@LasiadSH I dont understand the hashish comment. But of course morocco is fighting this as other crimes. Corruption makes it difficult and even without corrpution you cant eradicate it. Same goes for europe and algeria. Polisario funny enough as well are involved in drug trafficing. My comment about the census is made because it is important to know who can come back to morocco. Sahrawis in the camps themselves say not all people are original moroccan sahrawis. As well as returned prisonars of war, sahrawis with family in the camps and sahrawis that were in the camps and returned to morocco. Not talking necessairly about mercenaries. I personally believe it to be true, but wont make any claims about percentages. Of course everyone can have his own opinion. It is important to know for the negotiations about how many people we are talking and which age groups etc. So if the parties agree preperations can be made. We are talking about tens of thousands of people . it will be a big operation. They did not agree about the referendum option. It is a past station by now. I personally never agreed on a referendum. Morocco is a divers country. If everyone wants a referendum you risk ending with 3-4 countries. Division makes us weaker. Spain also does not allow the basks and the catalan. There are many examples. But I would not be so sure that people would vote for independence but of course I could be wrong. In the end morocco will not allow an independent country. The moroccan people would not allow and geopolitical it is suicide. Polisario is not able to take the sahara by force. Leaves us with two options; status quo or the people return to their land. I hope common sense will prevail.

It's so funny how you are so keen to defend ''Sahrawis'' yet you know nothing about them, about their culture, their history and their tribal culture. And not all Beidans are nomadic you idiot :) Some where nomadics, and some were settlers, and settled around Oasis :) This is why you have Sahrawi cities, such as Guelmim, Assa, Sijilmassa (now called Rissani), Ouarzazate. Tribes such as Oulad Dlim (who are one of WS tribes, and and who were famous to wage war for the King), even were given lands in the outskirts of El Jadida, Rabat and Sidi Kacem. As for Sahrawi sheikhs, the heads of tribes, they were always giving allegience to the king, they even did it during Spanish rule of Spanish Sahara, and they are still doing it to this very day, to a ceremony called ''bi3a'', as it was done under the different Islamic caliphates :) You should stop embarassing yourself.

I am Moroccan, but I am also Italian because I was born and raised in Alto Adige a small region near the border with Austria, which finds it self in a similar situation to Western Sahara, i think being in Morocco but having autonomy is the best solution for everyone and will bring peace and prosperity to the region and it’s people. I mean alto Adige is in Italy since world war 1 and today with the autonomy formula is one of the richest regions on the planet
