All the “friends” that kept me drinking went away. No loss!

I watched a video where a woman spoke about her decased 17yo daughter who died of a drug overdose. She put it like this. She always told her daughter to look out for strangers, But it wasn't strangers who supplied her with drugs. it wasn't strangers who left her alone to die of an overdose without calling an ambulance. Watch who you call friends...

When I quit it became very obvious who my real friends were and who were just there to bring me down to their level

Chances are, the people who have a problem with you quitting drinking have a drinking problem themselves. It makes them uncomfortable to have to think of that as they socialize with you when you are not drinking. You don't have to say a thing! They feel judged simply by your sobriety. It's okay to mourn the loss of certain friends, but truthfully, you're better off without those people in your life. It can be quite eye opening to see how much drinking cemented that bond. When it's gone, some friendships just won't survive that.

Since I quit drinking that poison four years ago and joined a walking group( new friends) this morning I was the first over 65 yr old to cross the finish line… proud of myself. Onwards upwards. Keep the videos coming mate👍

The most important thing for me is, to surround myself with friends who respect my choice and care about me as a person, not just as a drinking buddy. The friends who matter most will appreciate the healthier, happier version of you, even if your social habits have changed. With open communication, patience and a focus on quality over quantity, you can absolutely maintain strong friendships post-sobriety.👋

Friends from the bar or pub are usually not your friends, they are cronies only there for the beer or whiskey, you are secondary, just stage dressing. Keep us, reformed drinkers, on track Kevin. Thanks for the reminders and encouragement. 😂😂😂

This video and topic really resonated with me. I have been alcohol free an almost a year now and I have two kids, one five and one seven years old. I realised some time ago, that they are the most important thing in my life and the biggest gift I can give to them is my authentic presence and sober version of myself. And to do this, I have to cut ties to a group of people I have been hanging out for several years. Their life revolves around drinking and "having" a good time. Most of their private life has been ruined by their drinking and I don't want to do that to myself and my family. God bless you Kevin, you are doing great work. 🙏

I saved some friendships by quitting cuz when wed drink together it was starting to build up to drama. Now I may not hang out with them as much but I'm not participating in drunken chaos. Starts of fun ends up ugly.

I discovered recently I've got a fear of intimacy and I now realise that is what was fuelling my crazy drinking. I'm quitting now as I realise I will never fix this fear if I keep drinking and masking it. I realised it obviously makes it worse in the long run and will keep me stuck in it. I feel this discovery is a game changer as I have my clear reason to quit to improve my life and have a much better chance of getting the good relationships and confidence I've been missing since childhood and I'm 44 now..

I honestly don't have much luck these days finding people who positively influence me besides my cycling club. After quitting drinking, I lost some "friends" and family invites too . At 56 , its harder to find people that have the similiar mindset i do. ( personal growth, Cycling/fitness) Nevermind finding ones who dont drink but luckily im an introvert so being by myself suits me fine for the time being 🙂

Great chat Kevin 🙏 I know they say a man is not an island but for a while now it's been the most productive way to stay the course. I'm in the process of getting back in the world now. Cracking the shell so to speak. One day at a time. Onwards 💪🔥👍

I read somewhere that you should treat your new sobriety like a newborn baby: with lots of care and attention. It needs to be the primary focus at first. If you need to stay home to do that, so be it. Eventually, you will be ready to venture out.
