Will CGC Graded Nintendo Power Magazines Be the Next Big Thing?!

Let's go over the basics of collecting High-Grade Nintendo Power Magazines!
Follow the Mad Dog Collection on Instagram @maddogearle
CGC Comics recently announced their entry into grading Nintendo Power magazines. Could these relics from our childhood be the next big thing to hit the major auction houses?
With WATA graded video games hitting mainstream popularity in 2020, it could be that high-grade Nintendo Power magazines that were so closely connected to these games will be the next big thing.
It's only a matter of time before Heritage Auctions, Goldin Auctions, Comic Connect or Certified Link start carrying these awesome collectibles.
These great magazines cover those great video games from the 1980's and 1990's, including NES, Super Nintendo (SNES), N64 & beyond. Some of our favorite games of all time, including Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Fox, Metroid, Goldeneye... Our first encounter with all of these things was through this magazine! Before they hit the shelves of Toys R Us or KB Toys, they hit the pages of Nintendo Power!

I’m surprised that Nintendo Power grading isn’t more popular right now. I think these are going to go up in value. I decided to get my EarthBound players guide graded. I’m going to get ahead of the game and start grading Nintendo Powers while it’s cheaper to get these.

I have about seven Nintendo power number #1 Three of them are universal grades going in order 5, 6.5 and a 7. But I do believe they are worth it. They were not cheap and they’re not for sale, not tomorrow, not next week, not even next decade. I’ve also got about two or three of the final copies as well. One of them is graded at 8.0 universal.

I have the first 3 issues of Nintendo Power. I bought them from a back issue catalog 30 years ago with allowance money when I was a kid for $10 and barley touched them. I don't know anything about collecting or grading companies, but I would like to get them graded, however I'm to afraid to put them in the mail. Is there anyway I can hand deliver these to a grading company or a comic book store for appraisal?

Just a quick ?. I have copies of NP magazines that when you got a certain Power Card won a game. Won't say how I got them but this is going back to the early/mid/late 90's. Sealed since then and only opened once to find the winning card. Was about a 1 in 4500 chance if I remember correct. I labelled all of them and would have to go and get the Issue #'s. If you could do a vid on that it would be greatly appreciated. Also have Issues 1-4 CGC graded (working on 5-20) and have copies of # 5-118 fresh of the press. With wraps, pollybaged, inserts, and so on. They called me crazy at the time and I called it retierment :)

I'm not much of a collector myself, but your video has inspired me to re-acquire some of the 100s of power magazines I'd thrown out. The Felix NES cover was the first I'd gotten at a ToysRUS when the store was closing for the night. My parents told me it doesn't matter what you're reading, as long as you're reading. I remember a small picture of Chameleon twist at the end of one issue, and being so damn excited to get it for xmas. Obviously the game didn't live up to the hype, but I played through it several times nonetheless. I'm interested to see more videos showing off your collection, if you'd care to share. I can't imagine many people in the world have you beat. Simply the best... Exquisite!

Thank you for sharing this nice video of Nintendo Power, I have all of the issues, also have some Nintendo Fun club issues, 2 to 4, I was a nerd back then I even put plastic covers on my magazines the first 2 years so I would not damage them and handle them with extreme care so my magazines are in good condition, all are in 4 boxes, have 2 issues #1 one is sealed, bought extra, have many games in the original boxes, with book, many boxes are in original plastic wrap with prices, even saved the receipt where I bought them, hahaha, how much is to get a magazine graded? Oh I also have about 4 vhs tapes that Nintendo sent to subscribers with upcoming games, wonder if they are worth something ?

That's awesome man! From memory, it costs about $40 to grade a mag through CGC, and right now it seems to take about 3 months turn around time. But definitely worth it if you think they are mint. I would suggest picking maybe your 10-20 most minty books and starting there. They are so tough on the grading you may be disappointed if you submit too many to start. With my first submission, things I thought may get 9.0 came back 6.0... a lot of times the covers can look pretty mint, but these books just got so much mileage. Finger crinkles (that don't break color) are a big one too... and make sure they are complete with all inserts and posters before shipping out too... I missed a few when doing my subs! Best of luck!

@@themaddogcollection thank for responding quick and the tops, I have to go through my issues and check and see, I have not look at most magazines since 2000 or before, the issues after 95 or so I put away most of the time, I hated that the post office damage the spine of some of them or Nintendo just printed the label on the magazine, the later issues came in a plastic bag I think, I went to the store and bought a new issue for the ones the post office damage, haha

I dont know. Mint should be mint. I dont think i like it when mint descripancies should be applied between different magazines and years. The definitions of 9.0 grading should remain consistent for all types of media

I understand that Nintendo Power is special, for Americans because it was only available in America Official Nintendo Magazine, the U.K. and Australian equivalent. Nintendo Magazine System (Australia), the former Australian equivalent But if you are serious collector, would you consider collecting the U.K. versions and Australian versions as well? Or do you own any U.K. copies or Australian ones? Both versions have different content when compared together And i haven't even mentioned all the other magazines, Snes, Playstaion etc etc etc...

I think there are tons of great video game magazines... Sega Visions, Dreamcast Mag... in terms of strictly investment value, Nintendo Power is the most sought after and the rest might be considered too niche, but in terms of straight collecting, I think they are great to collect, as they are even rarer than Nintendo Power... I say go for it!

I agree with your assessment. I recently got my Nintendo Power #1 graded and it came back a CGC 8 5, but unfortunately, I cut out the Players poll mail in, so it's a qualified grade. It's ok,, I plan to display it with my collection.. I kept it safe in a magazine box all these years after getting it on release. I bought a few more key issues these past months, but they aren't worth grading. I think they're still worth displaying though.

A Qualified grade for VGA means that the game is missing it's seal (ie the shrink wrap has been removed), but they have deemed it to have never been unopened. Wata does a similar thing with their NS seal rating (no seal)

As a collector, grading games is something I understand to some extent, for preservation's sake, if nothing else. But I cannot justify grading Nintendo Powers here. The artwork, which is what makes many of these so special, is completely sealed in these acrylic vaults, never to see the light of day again. I'd rather page through each issue than be forced to only look at the cover for all eternity with my NP collection.
