Is SEALED VHS going to be the next BIG THING in graded collectibles?!

Could Sealed VHS follow the path of sealed Video Games?
Follow the Mad Dog Collection on Instagram @maddogearle
Goldin Auctions just sold a VHSDNA graded sealed CBS FOX Star Wars VHS tape for $57,400. Heritage Auctions just announced their entry into sealed VHS. Things are heating up in the realm of Sealed VHS.
If you grew up in the 1980's or 1990's, you definitely remember going to Blockbuster Video. It was a part of everyday life back then. This is what collecting is all about: containing this nostalgia from our past.
Will one of the current VHS Grading companies, like VHSDNA IGS or VGA dominate the market in the future, and become the next WATA GAMES for VHS?
Graded VHS tapes are on track to be the hottest new collectible group to hit the big times in 2022!

Graded vhs is the worst idea i ever heard in my life. You do know its been proven that the spike in sealed video game prices is artificial & organized by the grading companies themselves? You have to check the reels on a vhs tape to know its legit, it is impossible to tell from the outside. Anyone can reseal a vhs tape, i used to do it all the time.

That's completely false, brother. Just because Karl Jobst made a click-bate video that went viral doesn't make it true. He took a few publicly available pieces of information (real collectors actually in the hobby didn't learn one single piece of new information from his video) and manipulated it to fit a narrative. Karl Jobst had one motive, to make money from view counts. And he wouldn't ge that telling the truth, they way things actually are. His only sources were guys who never participated in the hobby. And to prove my point, see Jobst's follow-up video. Realize that Jobst only did interviews with people actually in the graded game collecting hobby *after* releasing his first video. And these guys schooled him... it's right on KZread. And Jobst left saying 'wow... yea you guys taught me a lot... I should do a follow-up video and set things right now that I have the other side of the story'' And sure enough, he did a follow-up video. But instead of telling the truth he had just learned from people actually in the hobby... he did yet another fake hit piece with an even more catchy click-bait title... because guess what, if his follow up was titled 'I may have been wrong... things aren't so bad after all' he wouldn't have gotten many clicks... the guy is a total fraud

@@themaddogcollection lol ok dude. halperin shouldnt even be allowed in the business after being fined by the ftc in the 80's. he caught his first fraud felony at 13, but go ahead & trust his business. if you think i blindly listen to a guy facing a defamation lawsuit, you are mistaken. it is not even possible to tell the condition of a tape in the plastic. when i worked in my uncles video store tapes would come in with damaged plastic all the time & we would have to reshrink-wrap them. people are sending off tapes to get graded that you could buy at best buy because these grading companies are buying tapes that there are still thousands of sealed copies of. if it were donna michelle releases or something it would make sense that they sell for so much in good condition.

@@J0SHUAKANE I hear your point about re-shrinking the tapes, but I am a firm believer that there are ways to authenticate a seal on many tapes, probably more-so from the bigger distributors. The Donna Michelle tapes, though of course would be very valuable sealed (or even opened for that matter), would probably be a lot harder to authenticate as a genuine factory seal. When people talk about sealed vhs they aren't talking about Tales from the QuadeaD or Video Violence, it's more CBS Fox type of thing. I believe your authentication issues apply more to the old guard of rare and obscure tapes (which are also cool)

In the UK we only really had the plastic cases and I'm not fussed about those at all, but I recently discovered the American VHS releases in the cardboard sleeves/cases, and I just think they look amazing. Graded sealed VHS is laughable! As someone who worked at several video stores throughout the 80’s and early 90’s, I can tell you quite a few of these sealed VHS aren’t actually factory sealed. Because of limited space in these rental stores, they still would order multiple copies of the more popular movies, put one case on display and the rest would be flattened and put into storage boxes in the back. The cassettes are rented out multiple times. When they ran their course and it was time to thin the inventory of these title that were no longer being rented on a regular, they got phased out for newer titles coming in. The slip cases, which were still in brand new condition were pulled out of storage, the rental tape put inside, and re-sealed with a professional shrink wrap machine. We re-sealed thousands of the rentals and sell them to the general public. Companies that didn’t have the company names printed on the actual shrink wrap, or unbroken factory seals (which companies got away from doing for manufacturing cost cuts) to indicate that these tapes are still factory sealed , grading companies can’t tell if they’re factory sealed or not.

When people get into it just for the money it ruines it for everyone. I don't see anyone buying up an old Blockbuster for the money, and old Pizza Hut, Arcade etc. But of course, someone will snatch a sealed copy of your favorite movie from you so you can't have it just so they can add money into their pockets doing nothing. It makes me want to buy up all the Back To The Future copies just so no one else can make money off of them and give them away for free to real collectors.

I don’t think this is gonna be able to sustain itself like video games. The closest analogous thing we have is vinyl records… but it’s not the same because movies were put on VHS that did not come out during that time (think Gone with the Wind). VHS is ridding the insane coattails of video games. VHS may have a small little scene but it will never take off like other things. That’s my thoughts. Maybe I’ll be wrong.

Don't you just love how even a sealed video game has the same game in it as any unboxed version or even downloadable clone, but guess what VHS is not the same. I can totally understand collecting VHS for the art work or collecting the art work itself which is really cool but the reality is VHS was nearly always pan and scan. So lets get this straight , you are collecting a print of a classic movie that has the totally wrong aspect ratio meaning it can be missing out up to 52% of the screen footage. There are simply better prints out there which people aspired to at the time, not to mention laser disc's. It's not hard to find seal US movies, there literally thousands out there as the number of titles are pretty small. Good luck trying to do that with horror, yeah there are a lot of great American horror movies but ask any horror buff and they will tell you straight out, the europeans had that game on lock, mainly the Italian's dominated that genre and most those movies are out of print and the masters will have been lost or were filmed over, they churned out so much stuff. So you need a english language version of rare Italian exploits and you will soon find out that getting an uncut version will lead you to Greece, they will be in English with hardcoded greek subs but try finding sealed greek copies of those movies and then am impressed.

Golden age comics are more rare...just saying ..paper drives during and after WW 2...and the burning of comics...made them rare

Those sealed star wars ones are mostly black tape-guard with a barcode. The gray tape-barcode with no barcode are harder to come by therefore more rare. I'm so glad I waited to find this out.

Eh, I personally don't see the value in them. Even if sealed, so many years sitting around combined with the temperature change environment will degrade the visual quality making the image look fuzzy, color bleeds and the audio muffled, and this is 240p resolution. The only value I see is the box art, but the box art is really the same identical 27×40 theatrical poster shrunk down to the VHS box size since they are almost the same dimension. Humidity quickly degrades the cardboard making it spongy, then the ink artwork begins to chip off because the ink no longer has a rigid surface to stay on. So, my answer is no.

I'm a 20 year VHS collector. Yes you can tell the difference between factory and reseals but It's completely speculative grading a VHS withought seeing the reels. Mold can grow on perfectly sealed tapes, mold spores are not visible to the human eye, doesn't matter if it's graded a "9.9". You also can't judge if the tape is first run just because it's in a first run box, distributors (like MCA) released newer run tapes in older boxes on a regular basis. VHS is not first edition of the home release of films either, they were released at the same time as Beta, and after CED, Super 8 and some other more obscure formats. Graded and Sealed VHS film I would say is a poor investment (even though saying the opposite would be personally beneficial) the popular titles are common, literal factory boxes of sealed tapes are discovered regularly, I have seen this happen with extremely small runs of very rare tapes multiple times.
