When Kempff plays his Moonlight Sonata, a beautiful moonlit garden appears in my imagination. It's forms inspired by the beauty of Kempff's music. The effect is more intense in a darkened room. It's been this way for fifty years.

do you know a better interpretation of the Moonlight Sonata's 1st movement than what mr Kempff plays here? Claudio Arrau did a nice job, but i still think this is one of the best interpretations. Agreed, in my opinion mr Kempff could have played it a tiny bit slower..... but still i do not know of a better interpretation.

Oh my God!!! That second movement of Op 90 was amazingly beautiful!!!! What a cantabile line, so simple, tender...his control of polyphony, the absolute attention to harmony and all these subtleties in this movement that could be so annoying if bad played...Kempff was a perfect magician, a poet in all his splendour (and there are so many wrong notes). Yeah, interpretation has to happen both sides: performer and listener...when listeners just want feux d'artifice then they just get that. Jesus!!! What an artist Her Kempff!!! These moments when he's like absent, in another world...dreaming that music... just amazing!!!

50 years ago his DG recordings of Beethoven Sonata's started my love for classical piano. It all started with this very piece. I heard that Presto Agitato and I got chills up and down and decided at that moment I had to learn and play it. All of his Beethoven Sonata's and Concerti are fabulous. You can't go wrong with Kempff's Bach, Schumann and Schubert. Brahms too.

Great interpretation! It´s difficult to findo a clear interpretation like this, not romanticized nor sweet. Certainly it´s one of the few masters that really knows what he´s doing with Beethoven. Amazing!

Totally agree. It saddens me to see so many of the new higly acclaimed pianists who seem to consider "interpretation" to be of no use whatever. And if you try to say that this is not the idea at all you are considered to be a "hater" who is jealous of how "fast" they can go when they play! Arghhhh

Masterful interpretation. All mistakes he makes in 3rd movement are a minor nuisance compared to quality of performance: simple, honest, meaningful and not romanticized. By far the best I've heard, superior to his own performances when he was younger (and made no mistakes obviously).

@iromiru I take your point but arguably an extra 35 years of experience should mean he hits the notes MORE accurately. And personally I preferred the expression of Lisitsa's version too. To me, it was full of aggression and anger and passion, and it seemed to symbolise Beethoven's own feelings at his impending deafness.

  • @matbroomfield

@iromiru That's an interesting insight about Beethoven. I wonder what he would have accomplished if he wrote something he did not consider trash? TBH, I have no idea how one's playing changes with age but I will say one thing - he has the face of a master artisan. Even not hearing a note, you could lose yourself in his emotions.

Mat Broomfield This is passion not agression and anger. Kempf is a great musician and recorded some of the best interpretations of Beethoven sonatas. When performing in concert at this age , he used to make more mistakes than other old interprets like Backhaus or later Richter.

just wanna add that Mr Kempff was already 74 years old at the time of that recording. Further, it should not be forgotten that his man has lived during the two World Wars including the difficult times following the wars - in one of the most affected countries. Thus, the age of 74 should be put into perspective. He became quite old, however, dying at the age of 94.

You obviously have a point about the bum notes but keep in mind that the technical aspect, although necessary to perform music, is merely a support for the art, much like brushes are to a painter. It has never made, and will never make, a great performance. What's really important is how the pianist interprets the piece and makes it his or her own. If a perfect technique was the pinnacle of musical art, we'd know - and we'd have a hell of a lot more pianists touring around the world and filling theatres up. This is precisely why Kempff is considered one of the greatest pianists of all times while others, like Lang Lang or even Kissin, aren't. For me, I think this performance might be one of the best I've ever heard.
