I remember being there and the playing was astonishing. For those who like trivia, the reason he glanced upwards a lot during the 1st Etude was because the camera above was making a noise which annoyed him. He nearly walked off

“Just because you can play Chopin Etudes fast, doesn’t make you a musician/pianist.” Richter’s musicality is beyond our imagination which proves even further that “Etudes” can sound less like an exercise and more like a beautiful poetic music. Love you Legend ❤️❤️

Plus, nowadays not many pianists, young or old, can DARE to give a recital of Chopin Etudes. It’s too risky. Yet here is Richter, at this age, dominating the Etudes…

Actually it’s pretty common in South Korea and Japan for young kids to study/practice and perform the whole 24 études of Chopin (I have done it back in 2010 as well) Although miles away from Richter’s level, obviously.

One of the best examples of what I miss when I listen to all these chinese musicians. Besides Richter was 74 years old when he performed this, it shows that the soul and the cautiousness with the music makes a grandmaster. Same with old Horowitz. But maybe you have to mature 70 years to get on this special level.

리히터는 젊었을떼 빨리 쳤던 혁명도 좋고 니이들어 천천히 치는 혁명도 좋아요. 신이 마치 장난감을 가지고 노는 것 같으니까요. Richter is god of piano

yes, I agree with you totally. He is the best! The ultimate artist, the ultimate poet and communicator of what the composer wants to convey to the listener, the receiver.

There is a more dynamic landscape to Chopin's harmonies than most of the other romantic composers' material.

@Peter Rabitt I still do like Liszt and Alkan, but Chopin is head and shoulders above them for sure.

@Peter Rabitt True. And besides, there was a demand for showy pianistic prowess during the Romantic era (and it persists today). They supplied it.

@Peter Rabitt Alkan was known to despise the trends of the Romantic era and refered to older greats for inspiration. He has some gems but yes, a lot of his music does get tiresome. He was known mostly as a technical virtuoso and less as a composer.

After an absence of many years, Richter returned to London for many recitals... After the Royal Festival Hall, when he played an unforgetable Schubert Sonata, apart from fantastic Prokofieff and Bartok, he played at the Barbican...and after the excitement of the previous concert, we were a bit disapointed here...it was such a long time ago that I do not remember it all that well.. but the evening at the Royal Festivall Hall was unforgetable...

It's nice to see Richter struggling at exactly the same bars as me on Op 10 n 1. Having practice this piece for 10+ year i can hear even the smallest mistakes and i know instantly when a difficult stretch comes and which notes are susceptible to be innacurate,
