Wildwood Boardwalk Rides 1957.mov

Фильм және анимация

Remember the Up N' Atom? The Bubble Bounce? The Toonerville Trolley and Casino Arcade? Check out these and many other rides from the past on the Boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey. Filmed in 1957 by my Dad with his trusty Bell & Howell 8mm film camera. I recently transferred my family's old films to digital format, and wanted to share these excerpts that show some of those fun rides alot of us remember. And by the way, I'm the littler of the two kids you'll see on the rides! And there's more coming soon...Enjoy.

So cool to see old footage of Wildwood and even other places. It's nice that videos were preserved until now to be shown since I didn't think that was a possibility.

Notice how close the ocean was to the boardwalk back then... now it's about a mile walk to the water lol

it’s like crossing a fucking dessert to go from boardwalk to the water in wildwood, but sea isle has always been my favorite shore town

Years from now, the icebergs will have all melted and the entire planet will be underwater except Wildwood. The Wildwood beach will still be there and it will be about 10 miles from the boardwalk to the water I’m only half joking

I was 18 years old and having fun at the boardwalk back then! Had 7 kids and we went there a week each year! Great memories! Not much if anything is left from my era! Even the satellite motel that we stayed at each year is gone! Townhouses now!

Thank you for posting. It's so interesting to see Hunt's Pier BEFORE the Golden Nugget Mine Ride was there (it opened in 1960, I believe). The Bubble Bounce would later be right next to Golden Nugget. Beautiful quality of these movies. Your dad was a good cameraman. :)

I was searching for The Bubble Bounce. We had one at Playland at the Beach in San Francisco, but none of the Playland YT clips had my favorite ride. I love the BB. Thanks to your Dad for filming your fun at Wildwood. He ended up filming a memory for me, a 62 year old woman in Marin County, California. Very cool. Thanks so much.

Yup I remember the bubble bouncer ride at Whitney's Playland at the beach in San Francisco. Also had that roller plane that went vertical and horizontal (only about 8 built like that) also classic rides like the octopus and rock o plane and the diving bell. Also the ride next to the diving bell and just North of the mad mine was a ride called Twister. I remember when West Coast Shows took over the park in 1968 they brought in all kinds of fair rides on trucks. Sad the park was demolished in 1972

Thank you for posting your home movie memories of Wildwood. My grandfather ran the Kiddie Rides in the Casino Arcade from around 1951 up until 1967 -- Mars Spook House, Tubs of Fun, Whip, Boats, and others. Grandpop loved his job and enjoyed watching all the kids having fun -- always a smile on his face. I believe I spotted him in the background -- very cool. Those were the best years of my life. I have some old Wildwood Boardwalk movies too and will try to figure out how to upload them soon.

Wow, the boardwalk is completely unrecognizable now compared to what it was in 1957. It would be cool to go back to this time, it would be like going to an alternate Wildwood boardwalk lol.

Crazy to see how far the water came up back then versus today. Back in the day when the fishing pier could actually be used for fishing! lol

We use to stay at beach cove & beach court motels right off the boardwalk at 20 th St from late 50's to late 60's. Water would come past the boardwalk back. Always started then finished the night at Hunts Pier. Can remember getting 4 or 5 hot dogs @ Nates Hot Dogs for a $1 during lunch special. It was just north of Macks pizza at Gleenwood Avenue. Think Macks had 4 locations back then for 25 cents a slice. Used to go to the magic shop and purchase hot chewing gum, gum that turned mouth black & cigerates loads to blow cigerates up.

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner. I remember when the Mars burned down (early 60's I believe) and the tragedy of a couple people dying inside. Haven't had a chance to capture my old Wildwood movies to digital format -- waiting for a cold snowy day to complete this for all you fans.

I believe three children died, one survived the fire on August 4th, 1964. Please check out my new movie that has great footage of the Mars ride in 1957...and you can see three of the attendees very clearly...Let me know if you recognize any of them!
