Wild Orangutans Learn to Wash with Soap

Ойын-сауық

Just over 40 years ago rescued orangutans released here in Borneo learnt to use soap by watching local people washing in the river. This learnt behaviour has now spread to these wild orangutans.

@@EggwithSubscribers-mz9du C++ is every other programming language combined. This is either the best or worst possible situation, depending on how you learn. For some people, it is drinking from all possible firehoses all at once. Other people are capable of taking it in sips and being satisfied with never having a very broad functional understanding of the language. However, I don't think any of this matters for orangutans. Grammar is beyond their mental faculties. Their brains can only operate on individual words, or phrases that represent individual ideas.

nateman10 Realistically orangutans wouldn’t understand its other useful purposes until they start using it frequently, and if they were to stop they would probably notice the difference that now their skin and hair is dirty which might bother them so they will use the soap more. I just think at first they apply it due to the smell

Just Another Nobody It could be a combination of both of our reasons, obviously if the person rubbed shit on them, the orangutang wouldn’t do it too. Lol, it has to do with the fact that it has never seen the soap before and its first impressions: pleasant smell contributed to its decision

  • @NotSoCrazyNinja

There is a possibility that at some point in the past, orangutans who used soap for a while, then didn't use soap for a while, realized a difference. As a modern human who uses soap daily, I can't imagine how disgusting my skin would feel if not cleaning often. I used to camp a lot and you can get REALLY dirty out in the woods. A nice bath after such a trip is almost orgasmic. It's possible that some orangutans realized how nice it is to "be clean" and kept up the habit, passing on the information to others. As a soap user, go a day without soap and you will want to go back to using soap lol.

There's so many cool reasons this could be a thing. - They might genuinely notice the cleanliness on their hands, which are used for delicate tasks, and thus want to keep their hands clean (or at least feeling a certain way; ie clean and non-grimy). - They might have some kind of quasi-religious thing going on, ceremonial or genuinely religious in nature. - They might want to BE humans, and think soap will get them there. Or that acting human will get them there. Or something. - They might think acting human is a way to be accepted by humans, and avoid poaching/capture/death. Or to continue being supported in the small ways they are supported. - Could be a scent thing. The smell might be a cultural/tribal thing they use to differentiate themselves from others. This is just so cool.

@@jaieet There's definitely imitation involved. Not so sure about theft-- orangutans definitely have the concept of territory, but I don't know if they have the concept of property. As far as it being a weird hobby, oh yeah, definitely. :-) But then, our hobbies probably look pretty weird to them as well. It's also worth pointing out that many of our hobbies are ritualistic in nature-- look at the formal and informal rituals that take place at a football game, for instance. Mind you, I'm offering this simply as one possible explanation. I don't know that we know enough about the psychology of orangutans to know for certain what's going on.

Initially i freaked out and split up from the friends i was with because i was so frightened and paranoid by the extreme effects the lsd was having on me. I roamed the streets in terrror until eventually i ended up in a local park where it was dimly lit, quiet and a wave of calm & safety washed over me. I was hallucinating incredibly intensely to the point everything in my vision was moving, warping and i was seeing things flying and scuttling around me. That's when i came upon a big calm Orangutan sat on a swing - i felt he was safe. I talked to him for what seemed like hours where he mused about life in general and assured me i was just tripping and would eventually be ok. He then got up and kind of waddled off into the night. It was a profound experience. That was back in 1995 and i never touched acid ever again.

It's one of our Spy Creatures from our series 'Spy in the Wild'. The spy creatures (life-like animatronics) have hidden cameras in their eyes that allow them to get up close and personal with various wildlife to take the viewer in the animal world. If you want to see more of them, check out the other Spy in the Wild clips: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lJp-t8WicdveqdI.html

Jesus I thought I was insane here. I watch a lot of orangutan videos and that animatronic was so uncanny valley to me that it kind of made me feel sick to consider rewinding the video to look at it again.
