15 minutes of moments take you to two Oregon Herd Management Areas. First through the Stinkingwater HMA east of Burns, and then to the sSteens HMA for the remainder of the video.
This trip was about horses in the HMA's outback, and though we were familiar with some, there were many we did not know. Very hot first two days, one of which was 92 degrees with miles of hiking, and then turning to severe winds that stirred up a dust storm, so thick it obscured the mountain and triggered an asthmatic response in Alice and had to cover our mouths with damp bandannas. Though I had a monopod for my camera, the shaky moments were just having a difficult time with steadying the camera in the heavy wind gusts.
Highlights for me on this trip: Catching a very brief glimpse of a black stallion between the junipers watching us intently- who we were sure was likely Voodoo! We tried to find him again, but lost him among the heavy stand of juniper trees. Such a brief sighting, neither of us got photos, but how thrilled we were! He looked at us briefly but intently. Turned his head and whinnied and poof! Disappeared! We searched and then followed up high on a rimrock looking down into the juniper forest hoping to capture another glimpse and idea of his direction of travel. We did see one of his grown sons- Mojo, which you'll see in the vid.
The other highlight was seeing Centaur! Some of you may remember last August 2019 the young cremello... almost white stallion, who befriended a domestic mule gone loose. This is how Centaur got his range name that trip- bc of his friendship with a half horse half donkey :) . The mule wasn't with him, so not sure if he'd been finally captured by his owner who loved him very much... or if he's still out there roaming the high country with a 'pack' of other mules LOL.
Special thanks to Opus Moon Music for the beautiful song Wild Horses and Wild Flowers.
Thank you to long time friend Alice McCammon for roaming with me!
Lets keep the WILD in our WEST... and our WEST WILD!

I love the videos and watching the horses move. I think the Steen's have the most beautiful horses of any band in any state! They are definitely the most colorful and the markings are wild! The confirmation of these horses are exceptional too. Love them! Thank you for your hard work putting in long miles to photograph the horses and sharing them with all of us. You and Alice are much appreciated!

Loved everything in this video. The horses were amazingly beautiful. The landscape was equally beautiful and breathtaking. Thank you for sharing this with those of us who would probably never get to see it in real life. Again, just an amazingly beautiful video!!!
Thanks for all you do,,, I could of watched this video all day long & I loved the song in the background!
Wonderful video, thank you.
Do you ladies give the horses a wave of your hand, just to let them know who you are. I love how they stop to just look at you guys. The horses will know you ladies by your wave and learn quickly who you are and know right away you aren't a danger. It seems it takes them awhile to figure you guys out, you could be anybody. But if you wave, they will know right away who you are. It's awesome what you ladies are doing. Thanks for everything.

Wildlife- born wild mustangs on protected Herd Management Areas in ten different western states since the 1971 Wild Horses and Burros Act. Thank you for viewing, Suresh.
Thanks a lot for sharing. It's great to watch this free horses. Does the BLM still round up wild horses? I don't hope so.

On official Herd Management Lands designated since 1971, yes, every 4-5 years. We last had a bait trap gather on the Steens of approx 100 horses in 2018.

@@MustangMeg Doesn't that mean a violation of the Wild Horse Annie law from 1959? Isn't it possible to castrate a certain number of stallions to avoid the round ups or bait traps? Both methods lead to long or short time facilities. And often to Mexican/Canadian slaughterhouses. That breaks my heart.
❤️
Those r my favorite animal
Such majestic horses.
What is that clicking noise in the background as you are filming?

Hi Mary. That would be Cloud, who so many of us watched on the PBS series. He's believed to have crossed the rainbow bridge- wild- on the Pryor Mountains. I would recommend you following his page on fb, Cloud the Stallion, founded by the PBS Cloud series narrator, Ginger Kathrens: facebook.com/TheCloudFoundation

If I can't get a Mustang i'll get myself a Mustang
I will like to have a black stallion. Those horses look so healthy just eating grass , no need of grains and all kinds of vitamins that domestic horses owners use. No stable, horseshoe or roof.
They must smell you.

They are very aware.
Do you ever video the wild horses from the Pryor mountains? I adopted a 10 yr old black stallion ( Musty) from there. They shipped him to Mtn Grove Missouri when they had mustang auctions, I gave $125 for him, was very leery of an older horse but everything worked out okay once I won his trust. My daughter's helped break him to ride, load, pick his feet up etc etc. Shame on BLM and cattle ranchers the mustang is a dying breed, there are thousands all over the country sitting in holding pens that will never be adopted and live their lives in confinement never be free again. A lot of these beautiful horses are shipped to Mexico for slaughter, don't let BLM, tell you they don't because they are!!!!

No, haven't photographed Pryor or Sand Wash Basin. Just in SE Oregon. But do hope to get out to some of those HMAs, for sure.
