South Steens stallion "Valor" in battle for mares.
We drove up to the South Steens range early that morning to find stallion Valor peacefully grazing with four beautiful mares. We must have spent around 1/2 an hour watching them as the sun came over the hill. Just as we started the engine and were ready to move on up the HMA we saw Valor perk up and start running toward the West. A band of bachelor stallions led by 5 year old stallion "Tauro" were on their way! As you can see there was a battle between Valor and Tauro- teeth gnashing and serious business soon to cross the road in front of us and on up in the hills. We spotted them later in the back country. Valor had battle wounds to the throat and nose and Tauro ended up with a nasty gash up one leg. Spring time on the range is a busy place with stallions fighting for mares, mares foaling and bachelor stallion bands forming. We watch and observe as the horses are our teachers. We learn more on each trip. We are working on our 8th year of watching and documenting this herd of horses on the South Steens as our first trip up there was February, 2010.
Valor was born in Spring of 2012 and is the age to attempt having a band of his own but maybe not tough enough to fight off a band of bachelors. One day he will have a band of his own as he is one tough stallion.
