Wild Banteng (วัวแดง) in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today I was waiting in the second of the watch towers along Thap Salao River in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand (เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าห้วยขาแข้ง). I like to get into position by first light, if possible, but that depends on the local regulations in the park. Then I usually sit from morning to night, and sometimes see nothing, but not today. On this day, a lovely large herd of banteng - Bos javanicus birmanicus (วัวแดง) came out of the forest very close to me and spent nearly 10 minutes browsing and grazing close to where I was hiding. There were a lot of young animals in this herd, so clearly the banteng are thriving here.

Species List
Banteng - Bos javanicus birmanicus (วัวแดง)
Note that some people use the genus Bibos instead of Bos for this species, but I am following the nomenclature as recorded on the IUCN website.

Beautiful creatures. Along with the Gaur. If only we still had the Kouprey, it'd be complete.

Yes indeed. Such a shame about the kouprey. At least we still do have one wild herd of water buffalo left in Thailand, and I hope to get some footage of them in the next year or so. I haven't had the chance to film in Huai Kha Khaeng for a long time, but I can't wait to get back in there again some time.

Yes. At the moment it seems that the Banteng population is increasing in Thailand, so I hope more people will have a chance to see them in the future.

Yes, absolutely. I've seen several banteng carcasses that had been killed and eaten by tigers, and a friend of mine once got film of a tiger feeding on banteng.

Thanks for the question. Yes, indeed. Not only can they be domesticated, they have been domesticated and hybridized with other domestic breeds of cattle in many S E Asian countries. There are a lot of details in this Wikipedia article.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banteng
