Stump-tailed Macaques Stuff their Cheeks In Kaeng Krachan National Park, Thailand.

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I have met up with a troop of Stump-tailed Macaques again in Kaeng Krachan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน), and I'm fairly sure it must be the same group that I have filmed previously. This time, many of the troop were in a fruiting tree and I had the wonderful experience of watching them stuff their cheek pouches with this fruit until it looked like their little faces would pop! Stump-tailed macaques are sometimes affectionately referred to as Stumpies, and sometimes not so affectionately as Ugly Monkey.

    Thank you so much for your lovely comment, and I absolutely agree of course. You will be pleased to hear that I just got some lovely footage of a troop of Assamese macaques this morning with several newborn babies in the troop. This species is quite hard to find in Thailand, so I’m so pleased I was able to get some film of them. As always, filmed in the wild in a protected area.

You may be happy to hear that I am a bit slow replying because I was out the forest for a few days, and I got some footage of a new species for me - Assamese macaques. They are quite rare here in Thailand, but I found a troop with several juveniles and some newborn babies. I will start editing that footage over the next few days.... so watch this space.

    1:33 the juvenile was biting & picking on a much younger & smaller macaque that was screaming in fear in the tree. The adult male came quickly to physically correct the bully. Junior got his punishment for stepping out of line! I have to give junior credit for taking his "spanking" whilst not trying to escape like most do!

    They certainly are, but it is a good adaptation to living in an environment where an abundance of food may suddenly be available but gone tomorrow. This way they can pick a lot and eat it at their leisure.

    Simply fascinating, great footage! I have been living close to Cha-am for over 2 years now and I still haven't set foot on Kaeng Krachan, can you believe that? 😅 I am finally going in 2 weeks! I have been going regularly to Panturat and a nearby mountain where there's a cave temple and plenty of the common macaques. I just can't get enough of animals, primates in particular (except for humans 😂)

    Yes... I know that can happen. I have been in Thailand for 27 years and there are still many places, even some place close to me, that I have never visited!!! I would strongly recommend getting into Kaeng Krachan as soon as possible... the butterflies are putting on a great show at the moment. Look for these macaques in the first 2-5kms as you drive in. This troop is often active along the road, especially in the morning. You can also see blond-tailed langurs around Ban Krang campsite. Good Luck.

    Sad part is a baby that independent that far up in a tree would likely be killed or seriously maimed/injured by a fall. All it takes is one slip or losing the grip on a branch.

  • @thailandwild4897

    @thailandwild4897

    Yes, it is possible, and even amazing climbers like gibbons are known to fall occasionally and sometimes break limbs. Nonetheless, these macaques haver great climbing skills even as babies, and the few times that I saw some fall as a result of disputes they generally just landed in the branches lower down and were fine. I have seen langurs fall quite far, but again into the top branches of a shorter tree, and within moments were back up in the top of the tall tree playing again.

    Yes indeed. Clearly these pouches make great sense for an animal that occasionally finds an abundance of food, like these fruiting trees. They can smash and grab and then eat and digest at their leisure. The first time I saw this troop, they were high up in a flowering tree and they completely stripped it clean in a few minutes. I always wondered how they did that..... now I know.
