Banteng (วัวแดง) Herd with Two Big Bulls in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

After many hours of waiting in one of the lookout towers along Huai Thap Salao River in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary (เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าห้วยขาแข้ง) I was eventually rewarded with a wonderful view of a large herd of banteng - Bos javanicus birmanicus (วัวแดง). The interesting thing about this herd is that it contained two large mature males. There were also many calves, so clearly this herd was thriving. The darker of the two bulls is clearly dominant, and the other one keeps an eye on him. At 4:05 the dominant bull checks the breeding status of a female and shows the Flehmen Response during which scent is transferred into a special gland in the roof of the mouth known as the vomeronasal organ (VNO), or Jacobson's organ.

Thank you for watching the clip and for your comment. Yes, Huai Kha Khaeng is a wonderful forest, but not really rain forest. Only some of the forests in the South, like Khao Sok might be called rain forest. Rather, HKK is seasonal evergreen forest and mixed deciduous and deciduous dipterocarp forests. This is actually a very rare forest type and is one reason why HKK has such great biodiversity.

Hello Sten.... thank you so much for your kind comment. It means a lot to get some positive feedback, and I'm really glad you enjoy the channel. I do have material for another 4 or 5 clips that I am working on, and I will be out in the forest a lot over the next 3 months, trying to get more footage. These next few dry months are the golden time in Thailand for seeing bigger animals.... mammals etc., so fingers crossed that this year will be the year I get one of the cats.

Bibos is a genus of cattle with three extant species, the Kouprey (Bibos sauveli), the Banteng (Bibos javanicus), and the Gaur (Bibos gaurus), the latter two additionally evolved into domesticated forms, the domesticated form of the Banteng (Bibos javanicus) is the Bali Cattle (Bibos javanicus domesticus) while the domesticated form of the Gaur (Bibos gaurus) is the Gayal/Mithun (Bibos gaurus frontalis), Bibos is also the most basal extant genus within the subtribe Bovina (True Cattle).

Yes, indeed Akash. Huai Kha Khaeng is part of a complex of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks on the western side of Thailand known as The Western Forest Complex. It is home to our largest remaining population of Indo-Chinese tigers. I don't have recent data, but I know that tigers have been spreading out from HKK into the neighbouring parks and I think the total might be around 100+ individuals.

However, there was a study on the mitochondrial DNA of Kouprey, and this is a summary of its conclusion........ Research published by Northwestern University in London's Journal of Zoology indicated a comparison of mitochondrial sequences showed the kouprey might be a hybrid between a zebu and a banteng.[9] However, the authors of this study rescinded their conclusion.[10] Because a fossilized skull was found dating from the late Pleistocene or early Holocene epoch, they concluded the kouprey is not a hybrid. More recent genetic analysis has supported this position.[11]
