Wig Wag Railroad Crossings

Ойын-сауық

This is a video I made at the Six Flags theme park in Arlington Texas of the Six Flags railroad that has two wig wag railroad crossings that both don't work. These are historic items of railroad signals and Six Flags needs to repair them back to there wig wag back and forth state. Also check out the guy at the second crossing trying to hold the wooden gate down while it's trying to raise up. I wish it would have broken so I could have caught a real idiot on youtube.

I used to go here all the time as a kid in the early 2000s, and I remember the Wig Wags used to actually move and light up. It's a shame they aren't working anymore

At least Six Flags Texas still has it's railroad. Six Flags Illinois has been without the train and the streetcar 25 30 years now. Though the train was powered by a diesel engine in the tender ( kind of think it was purpose built and not converted. ) and since all the public access crossings were grade separated the few employee access crossings were protected with standard kiddieland small scale signals

The "wig wag" mentioned is actually a banjo type. EDIT: There is a working one at the Illinois Railway Museum. Look it up.

Unlike most Six Flags parks, this railroad uses real steam locomotives. Six Flags St. Louis also has a real steam locomotive, while the other Six Flags parks have diesel locomotives.

Is there any information available on the steam engine, such as who built it and when and where and for who originally and what gauge is it and how did Great America come to own it? Any info would be much appreciated! Great video especially to find the Wig Whams only to find not working!

The Six Flags Over Texas Railroad steam locomotives originally worked the Patout family's Enterprise sugar plantation railroad and interestingly enough are STILL owned by the Patout family. Six Flags leases them. The green train's locomotive was built at ALCO'S Dixon works. Originally called the Mary Ann, it was renamed the General Sam Houston. The red train (seen in this video) locomotive was built by the Porter Locomotive Works (a builder of industrial locomotives). Originally called Lydia, it was named the Mirabeau B. Lamar (the second President of the Republic of Texas-Sam Houston being the first) until the early 1990s when it was renamed after long-time locomotive engineer (and authenticated centennarian) Charles Jefferson Patton. Both continue to pull trains at the park and in fact the railroad holds the distinction of being the only original ride (from the park's opening in 1961) still in existence! I'm not sure but I believe the track gauge is 2'. Maybe 3'. Hope this information helps. Stay safe and healthy.

It's a banjo shaped crossing signal that swings back and forth to warn motorists (or in this case park visitors) that a train is coming. By the way, the little red light in the middle doesn't flash but remains constantly lit until the signals deactivate. Stay safe and healthy.
