Lionel Ritchie moved heaven and earth to get Dylan to show up, when he finally did he walked in and the whole room full of mega stars (Ritchie's words) stopped what they were doing and looked over at Dylan, he walked to a corner of the room and sat on is own, Ritchie said I pestered him to do it and here he is and I could hardly muster up the courage to go over and introduce myself. When you get a person in the music industry that changed musicians way of approaching and writing songs then to them a music god walked in the room

buckeygirl16, That's the part I love the most!! Bruce Springsteen's voice gave me chills, especially when he belted out, "We are the world!! We are the children"!! "There's a choice we're making and we're saving our own lives"!! The man sung like he was giving birth to something inside of him. The pain on his face when he sung his part with Stevie. They all killed it, but Bruce killed it, woke it back up and then killed it again!!!

For me, I think Stevie Wonder stole the show! He is so emotionally involved and invested in this song you can see it and hear it! Don't get me wrong, there were some amazing solos and duets in this video. But, for me, Stevie stole it. I loved Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, and Kenny Rogers also. Everyone in this video is amazing for coming together like this. We need more of this!

The best part was that they had to ask those two to come back to record that extra interlude as the song wasn't going to be long enough and was lacking something. Bruce was already gone and had to jump in his truck and drive himself back to the studio to record his part. A different era and and different type of vibe that wasn't about egos and people doing things for their own profile, before social media ruined us all.

What a different world back then in 1985. People thought that they could make a difference in the world and were willing to try to do something to help. Now, for some reason, it seems much more difficult or maybe I’ve become too cynical. Beautiful to see Dee’s reaction and how much this song touched her. ❤️

The 2 men behind this are rarely acknowledged anymore; the great Harry Belafonte (singer, actor & activist…going back to 1950s, black-listed in McCarthy era & close friend of MLK) & Ken Kragen (music manager, TV producer, activist & fund raiser) who, start to finish, did this project in under 3 months. After “Band Aid” (in the UK) did “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, for African relief, Harry called Kragen, about the US doing something. Kragen got Lionel Ritchie & Kenny Rogers (he managed both), Stevie Wonder & Quincy Jones. Quincy got Michael Jackson & the project snowballed. Kragen is said to have had to turn away dozens of artists. It was Harry & Kragen who chose Lionel & Michael to write it, Quincy to conduct & produce, secured the talent, facilities, staff, etc. The core vocalists & studio musicians 1st recorded at Kenny Rogers studio. The “crowd” recording & video was an all-nighter at A&M Recording Studios, with many artists coming straight from the AMA Awards. It sold over 20 million copies. Fastest selling US pop single & 8th best-selling physical single in history. 1st single certified multi-platinum (4x). 3 Grammys, 1 AMA & a People’s Choice Award. Record sales & merch raised over $63 million (equal to $147 million today) for humanitarian aid in Africa & the US. Soloists, in order of appearance; Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Al Jarreau, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Bob Dylan & Ray Charles. Chorus (those who didn’t solo), alphabetical order; Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, Lindsey Buckingham, Mario Cipollina, Johnny Colla, Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Bill Gibson, Chris Hayes, Sean Hopper, Jackie Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Pointer, Ruth Pointer & Smokey Robinson.

Reasons given vary (such as; he didn't like the song, he didn't want to record with others &/or he got mad when Bob Geldof called him a creep), but I haven't found a well sourced reason. Prince did donate a (solo) song for the album. Eddie Murphy was also asked to participate, but turned it down beforehand, because he was recording "Party All The Time." Supposedly, he later said, once he realized the importance of it, he "felt like an idiot."

My mom bought the full tape, which had lots of songs on it. I've heard this song like 200 times in my life. I admit it gets more impressive each time. Steve Perry, Cindi Lauper, Ray Charles and that back and forth between Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen are the standouts to me. I was 10 years old when this came out and got the full album (which I still have) for my birthday at my request. I remember that the proceeds from the sale of these albums went to feeding starving people in Ethiopia. Besides LOVING the song, I remember feeling good that my birthday present helped feed people on the other side of the world. So many great artists here and worth watching/listening to over and over again. It's also fun to look at the list of the artists singing in the choir who didn't get their own lines...but contributed none the less...Bette Midler, The Jackson 5, Latoya Jackson, Lindsey Buckingham (from Fleetwood Mac), the other half of Hall & Oates, so many others! Coming up on 40 years after this song was released and it still floors me everytime!

I was in high school when this song came out. I am a minority of that time so hearing ALL of these artists come together for a song, it blew my mind!!! It is songs like this that made your life a little better. You may deal with prejudice still, but it isn't on the same level that it was when this song came out!! I believe one of the many reasons this song was a success was because of MJ, since he wrote the song.

Thank you for this reaction. I wholeheartedly agree that the world needs this music right now. And I agree that the video is an amalgamation of the most influential talent in the music industry. Personally, this video popped up when I needed a good cry to say goodbye to my brother. This video has virtually ALL of the musicians I grew up listening to, and my brother and I would listen through the catalog of music that was in that room. He loved Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and a bunch of others. I grew musically because my brother got me excited about these musicians as a ten-year-old. My brother, in part, inspired me to earn a doctorate in music theory/comp. Thank you for the connection from a musician's perspective as well.

The man standing by Harry Belafonte is comic actor Dan Ackroyd. Dan was one of the early SNL cast members. And an awesome musician as well. He was half of SNL music/comedy duo the Blues Brothers with John Belushi. And in the middle of it all is 60's voice of his generation and counter-culture icon, Bob Dylan. FYI - his son Jakob Dylan fronted 90's singing sensation group The Wallflowers. Michael Jackson wrote this song and it was produced by Quincy Jones. Like others in the day, I counted down the days to watch it's debut on MTV or VH1. I don't remember which one. The pairing of Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen was genius. Their voices contrasted beautifully.

This was a singular moment in time. For aging Boomers and Gen Xers like me, this song was a very emotional one as the Ethiopian famine was beyond horrendous. When I first saw it as a 16 yr old, it gave me tears of joy, but when I see it now, I'm saddened by all those we've lost. Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Kenny Rogers, Harry Belafonte, James Ingram, Al Jarreau, the Pointer sisters and now Tina. I know younger generations aren't really connected to this song or these legends, but they'll always matter.
