Why Your Parents Hate Your Tattoos | Tattoo Artists React

Will there ever come a time when tattoos aren't controversial? Or are we already there? Join us on an introspective journey where we explore family trauma, socio-economic prejudice and working at Starbucks while goth in this week's episode of Tattoo Artists React.

My parents hated my tattoos for a while, then I just kept getting them, and have always talked about wanting full sleeves and everything growing up, so they finally just realized I’m just making myself happy in my own skin, so they absolutely support every tattoo I get now, which is gnarly.

I was sure my parents were gonna hate my tattoos bc we’re Jewish and it’s very taboo in our culture but they actually liked them!

I'm also Jewish. I thought the same thing. My parents don't have a problem with mine either.

Meanwhile, my father - who hasn’t been in a temple since his bar mitzvah - faked a heart attack when I got mine… it’s smaller than a quarter.

I never gave a crap about my family liking my tattoos at all. My tattoos and piercings are for me, not for them. Tattoos are also pretty dang acceptable where I'm living in the US. The first tine I visited this area before moving here, I saw a dude with a neck tat wearing the most beautiful prada suit I had ever seen getting out of a nice ass sports car. Damn, I still think about that suit lol 😍

3:26 This excerpt about Cree native american tattooing practices is not only really interesting but uncanny in how it mirrors modern day tattooing practice down to deposits, the tattoo machine rattle sound, color application, and trying to hide how badly it hurts from everybody watching.

I finally told my dad I had tattoos last summer, after hiding them for 11 years (since I got my first) and he was fine with it even though he hates tattoos. I got the “why, though?” But, he at least was chill. For a long time I thought he would flip bc I knew he hated them with passion, but I’m a successful lawyer/translator and am a great daughter so I think he values and respects that more than his thoughts on tattoos.

My dad is 87. I didn’t get my first tattoo until 3 years ago. I’ve got a few now and he refuses to acknowledge they exist. He’s always hated them and especially hated them on women. He just pretends he doesn’t see anything. Probably the best outcome I could hope for. 😂

I got a filigree tattoo on my upper arm. Just a black outline. My mother didn't like it but when we went to go visit my grandmother my mom told me to show it to her. She loved it!

My parents hate most of mine, but that’s coming from very strict Irish catholics 😂 even now as an artist they don’t like it, but it’s personal preference. It seems like the people that dislike ALL tattoos is getting smaller though, and that’s a good thing. People are seeing the art, not just “oh man they’re covered in tattoos”

My first tattoo was a half sleeve, couldnt drive anywhere cuz my car was broken down so ubered there. After I was done with my first session I called my mother for a pick up and didn’t tell her what I was doing; she was shocked (and furious) when she found out. 😂

It's the origins of tattoing, mostly. Back in the day it used to be a way to mark criminals or pariah, and in many bellicose cultures it was a way to mark warriors, as well. In any case tatts used to mean one thing, and one thing only: trouble

I long for a day when society understands that tattoo are just pieces of art on the body and nothing else!! A good teacher wont be any less good at teaching because she got a dragon tattoed on her back, same for a doctor that wanted a sunflower on the back of her hand!! Tattoos dont change who you are and your abilities and knowledges, you wont be less professional because of a bit of ink below your skin!!

What's up, Inked? Could you make a video with reactions to videogame tattoos (not on real people but in-game ones)? Like tattoos that characters from Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Sleeping Dogs, God of War, Mirror's Edge and other popular franchises have.

Some people get tattoos TO intimidate people. That is then projected onto all tattoos, which is unfair. But that is the reaction some people are trying to elicit.

I teach at a university in a large business program. I get only positive comments and interests about my several visible tattoos. That's true of 'old school' faculty and students. My impression is that people care way less than many tattoo wearing folks want people to care. They are far more mainstream than they used to be. Unless you have something vulgar, racist, sexist or otherwise along those lines, my experience is that its not a big deal. There will always be somebody who looks at you funny but its going to be rare.

I think that it comes from religion also, it's written in the Torah "וְשֶׂרֶט לָנֶפֶשׁ לֹא תִתְּנוּ בִּבְשַׂרְכֶם וּכְתֹבֶת קַעֲקַע לֹא תִתְּנוּ בָּכֶם" If I recall my school studies, it is said to be derived from the fact that wheb the israelites came to Kna'an, the people there had it so we shouldn't look like them. Obviously this is a rather popular text for tattoos among tattooed jewish people 😂

I used to like them in my 20s because in my 20s I liked everything. Now that I know what I like I don't like them. I'm in my 40s and I know who I am. Thankfully I didn't get tattoos back then because I would regret them all.

People who don't like tattoos, obviously don't like all forms of art! I couldn't careless if my parents dislike my tattoo's or not because I left home 0ver 30 years ago, so I can do WTF I like! Haven't seen them very much, since adopting this theory & since I learned how to tattoo on my own, IDGAF If see them! lol

We never talk about how tattoo inks are not FDA approved to be in your body. They only improve in quality but not in safety. Are there heavy metal in there? Does the ink stay in your skin or travel to other parts of your body? Do they cause cancer? Do they negatively impact your immune system? While tattoos become more popular so has the desire to be healthier and a more informed consumer. No one in the tattoo industry is pushing for safer or more non-toxic ink options, as far as I know.

Tattoos suck because your left knowing you lacked something and the image may or may not be beyond or beneath your actual comfort zone ....Stop trying to be something you're not. ... Having did that , I also appreciate the dedication... it's like having your gambling ledger written on you for others to assess... judgements are individual or contextual to appreciate or dislike. 😊

Or maybe tattoos tell a story, remind someone of a memory, a tribute to a passing relative or friend, words of affirmation to remind them that they are a good soul. My right arm is covered in the story of my new life, leaving a toxic workplace and friend group and family group. I wouldn't trade that on for anything. It reminds me of all the crap I went through and how I made it through.
