Tattoos We Never Want to See Again | Tattoo Artists React

You may think that your idea for a tattoo is a unique and beautiful snowflake of a concept, but chances are that your tattooer has seen it before. Not just once before, but hundreds of times. So we asked our group of tattoo artists, which tattoo idea are you absolutely sick of seeing? The answers range from played out styles to overdone motifs to one happy-go-lucky tattooer that loves it all. This is the season premiere of Tattoo Artists React with a whole new cast of characters. Strap in, it’s going to be a wild ride!
Inked has rounded up all of your favorite tattooers for another season of Tattoo Artists React. This season we’ll grill them about the biggest mistake they’ve ever made, how they approach doing job stoppers, what it feels like to see that their work has been covered up and more. You’ll marvel as they struggle to figure out which celebrities aren’t inked and laugh until your sides hurt as they tell us about the worst clients they’ve ever had to deal with. It’s going to be a season filled with excitement, hilarity and even the occasional tear. New episodes will be posted every Friday.

Everybody is all pissed off at the artists for answering the question that they were asked. It's not like they walked up to random people on the street and started laughing at them for having a lion tattoo. These are just the opinions of some people in the field. If that puts you off of one these images then maybe ask yourself why do you want it.

I know everyone enjoys Nikko's positivity but I'd also like to point out that some of the others were not necessarily bashing people's tattoo choices either! Jason Clay Dunn and Sara Fabel were pointing out more of the problem of quality of some of the tattoos not healing well, not so much a problem with people choosing them. Owen Paulls also made a good point about trendy tattoos sometimes being experimental and also not holding up over time. Pennyboy never gave an answer on purpose, and Carl Grace only made a statement that people stop enjoying certain styles because they're popular. Some of this is just factual, not salty!

On one hand, I understand being tired of doing cliche tattoos. However, things like roses and clocks are popular for a reason; they hold cultural significance, they're stunning to look at when an artist can pull it off, and they symbolize very broad, common themes (beauty and time/timelessness). Again, while i get the artists' frustration and desire to do more original work, I also don't think it's fair to say that no one from this point on can get those tattoos. Thoughts?

Dishes and Digestive Systems Wdym “allowed,” anyway? What you really mean is should people choose them. There aren’t going to be any laws about it, lol. And anyway, they work by commission, so they can deny or approve whatever work they like. Maybe their opinions seem rude to some people, but to me that shows a lack of understanding on the clients part, for as you said their perspective is understandable. I just think you’re escalating the topic by asking it in the way you did. At best the video advocates more originality, not banning unoriginal tattoos altogether.

Having said that, his sentiment is spot on, you shouldn't hate just because it's not what YOU (as the artist) want, it means something to that person no matter how many of that particular tattoo you may see. Tattoo artists can also get very Jaded. The majority of people don't see or are as emersed in the world to understand what good/bad art or design might be.

I think a big thing about the 'generic' tattoos of today (roses, lion head, compass/clock) is that people genuinely like those things. People aren't out here getting a rose tattoo because they think it will impress other people, they just like roses. These things are just cool things that people like, both symbolically and aesthetically, so they get it tattooed on themselves because they like these things and it makes them happy to carry it around with them. Everybody knows it's hardly unique, but they don't really care. Lions are cool, why should other peoples tattoo effect my tattoo?

Don't worry! tattooers absolutely want you to bring reference pics, but what they don't want is pics of other existing tattoos with the expectation to copy it. Bring photos of the thing to be rendered, whether it's a style of lantern or a pose of a bird flying. Whatever it is you want. But their main frustration is when people treat them like photocopiers and want them to steal an existing (often also stolen) work from Pinterest and not give them any freedom for their own style. Hope that makes sense! (Good luck with your first tattoo, whatever it is you decide to get!)

Doing repetitive work and work one generally wouldn't care for is just apart of the business. Every career has their downsides. Doing simple, small tattoos is how a lot of people get started. I don't know of any local tattoo artists around me that I have either met or my friend has gone to that has complained about what we are getting, even if it is simple. My first tattoo was pretty cliché and my tattoo artist was super cool about it (cat outline and semicolon). He was fun to talk to.

While I was getting a tattoo a few years ago I saw at another artists' station a sketch he had done of a pair of realistic eyes, one with a bat wing and one with a feathered wing. He said he wanted to do some bright colors for it so he was waiting for someone with pale enough skin so that it would stand out. I liked the sketch and I'm pale af so I volunteered my back and he gave me a good deal on it (since it wasn't exactly a design I had decided on myself). I think they probably have a lot of original drawings they would love to tattoo on the right person who comes along.

When I go in, I’ll usually give the artist a reference: “this is kinda what I was thinking of in general but like, play around with it. You’re the pro, work your magic” Giving artists some artistic freedom will (IMO) make the artist more excited to do the tat and will come up with some of the MOST AMAZING WORK

The most amazing tattoo work I’ve ever had done was like this for me. I gave him a reference photo, kinda what I was wanting from the tattoo in general (like the feel of it), and then told him to run with it. I love it so much that I’m going to extend the tattoo all the way around my thigh. I’m so ready for it

All of my tattoos mean something to me, even if it’s not necessarily what I would get if I walked into a shop today.
