Let’s face it. Your life is boring as f*ck. And here’s the biggest reason why... you haven’t taken enough risks. Whether you’re thinking about starting a KZread channel, asking out that cute stranger across the bar, or moving across the world to your dream city, it’s scary to take a leap into the unknown.
But if you want to live a life filled with purpose, adventure and happiness, you’re going to have to get really comfortable being uncomfortable. So in this video I talk about how you can push yourself further, take the right kind of risks and consistently embrace uncertainty in a way that feels right for you.

Not exactly a “wild” risk, but I just ended a 3 year relationship and I’m moving back home to save money to fund my dream: opening a local coffee shop so I can be happy every single day instead of working a job that drains me :) great video, thank you!

My life is "boring" by design... I spent all my early adulthood (16-30) having the excitement of skipping meals to pay for gas to work and having no reason to live... being paycheque to paycheque with no ways to save or improve my life... If you come from a privileged place where you had all your needs filled then yes you'll crave excitement and risk... Boredom and stability is my reward for lasting so long in a shitty place and digging myself out of it.

Was looking for this comment. The risk/reward analysis given by so many motivational types always market "boring, low risk, low reward" choices as a bad thing; as if stability and predictability are somehow inherently less fulfilling.

I recently realized that my goal is to be bored. The first 45 years of my life was go-go-go, work-work-work, stress-stress-stress. Bored means I have completely the things that are important to me and I have time to chose what I want to do. Bored opens my life up to new classes and new art and new learning and new friends or new activities.
@A-Wa

yes it really depends! After work I do other necessary things like cooking and cleaning and all this drains way too much energy, that I just lay on the couch before I sleep. There is no time to be bored, so I see boredom as a privilege to have!
@Frichilsasta08

Yeahh boredom is a privilege for sure. One can be bored from not having money to do things that might be "fun" though. However. If you're constantly financially stressed and simply trying to survive, I'd say boredom is definitely a privilege.
Taking risks definitely makes life more interesting and less boring. I used to be scared of taking financial and social risks in my life, until I read a great idea from author Nassim Taleb. He said "you want to take risks that are adverse to ruin." This opened my eyes to the idea that not all risks are created equal, and that I've been missing out on many opportunities in life.

I was getting bored, felt like the nine inch nail song, “every day exactly the same”, so I signed up for jiu jitsu as a 45 yr old premenopausal wife & mother, yikes, daily asking what am I doing… but I see improvement, & my 12 yr old son trains too and sometimes we work together, helping each other having fun. Definitely not bored anymore and so far worth the risk of old lady body breaking… 😁 thanks for another great video. 🤓👍💕

Was floating around my senior year of college in the South with no job prospects. Didn’t know what to do or where to go. Applied to an internship in NYC just for the hell of it. Got invited to interview, then invited again to the second interview in NYC. Emptied my bank account to fly out there for that one day to give a presentation. Found out I got the job on the ~30 hour greyhound bus trip back to Oklahoma. 5 years and a career later and it’s still one of the best decisions I’ve made since.

I feel the title does the contents of this video a disservice - people's lives aren't boring, they are unfulfilling, exhausting and stressful from enduring a less risky path. I'm glad I persisted in watching this nonetheless because it really was a compelling guide on how to get out of your own head and kickstart that thing you always wanted to do - a very thankful fan
Me: A guy who's terrified of living a mediocre life, but that loves comfort too much to take risks (also is horribly terrified of getting out of his comfort zone). This video could be a summary of my life, sadly. I liked the video though! It reminded me of what's important for me. Thanks Matt!
This video could not have been posted at a better time! I’m giving my 2 weeks notice at my job TOMORROW and I was second guessing everything. The “cost of inaction, reward of action” graphic was exactly what I needed to see! Thanks so much for this great content!

Yessss gall!! I am on the brink of doing the same. Why am I going into a boring job day in day out when travelling has opened up?!?
I found that studying new things and doing a lot of self-improvement has quelled the boredom that had previously settled over me like a thick film of dust :)
Being willing to take on risk has improved my life drastically. I had dreams to be a doctor but never pursued them since I didnt feel like I could handle the pressure. Finally reached a point at 32 where I knew I'd regret it on my death bed so i started going after it. I'm 2 months out from being a Paramedic and just barely applied to a PA school and am waiting to hear back :)

Life can be difficult swings between tedium and chaos, grinding out to save and staying at home to going on the week holiday Going for a walk or bike ride or a run in a park breaks up the delirium, but it’s also getting the mindset to realise how you have options and to stop allowing work to over ride your down time. Thanks for the great content

Love this video! Recently i took the risk to direct my energy from grad school to my creative passions. Took the summer off, started my youtube channel, plan on getting more action into writing my book and i havent felt this kind of joy or flow state in soo long. Its hard budgeting since i do still work mostly part time, but my happiness already has been so worth it! If you're on the edge.. take the leap!
I'm about to take a big leap in my life and the size of the risk feels quite overwhelming at times. But this video made me feel at peace with the risk I'm taking and, since I'm feeling so bored in my life at the moment, it now seems like it's the perfect thing for me to do next. Thank you!
This has got to be one of my favourite videos from you so far! Literally had a conversation on this topic with someone who's depressed and feels stuck. There's so much great advice here that I relate to - most recently I decided to 'blow' my savings on buying a crappy old house in need of renovation (after carefully inspecting and paying for 2 separate surveys to be sure it's not a money pit). 6 months later, I now live in a house with lots of character (after having stripped everything back to original features) , people want to rent my living room for photo shoots and I'm happier in this beautiful decay than I'd be in a luxury apartment that I'd rent.
This is just the video I needed for today. It inspires me to not stick to only what I know is safe. But try out new things, that I'm not familiair with at all.
Have not watched your video for a while, just randomly get this from the algorithm and no disappoinment. Totally agree with all you share here. Matt, you used to give me a lot of motivation and advices, now maybe you still do, thank u so much!

I 100% agree with this mindset. I had this exact feeling this morning - BUT I had a thought, maybe my life has been so stressful and rushed over the past few years… maybe I have actually taken the time this week to be efficient, working during my scheduled hours, relax, enjoy self care and now finally have room to breathe and exist. I think being boring is what I need right now.

Thanks for the advice Matt.
Such good advice. I've been very specific with my job choices in an attempt to carefully curate my career and respective growth. And looking back there are some jobs I should've taken and definitely one or two I should've passed on. I know this now because I chose action. The thing that scares me most is the difficulty to quantify the cost/reward of inaction, because of how success and growth compounds, equally discontent and stagnation. Personally, I'd rather make the choice than have it be made for me. To everyone, good luck on your journey, I've started and still going :)

Heck yah!! Looooove this! Makes me feel way better that I recently took several risks when very few people agreed that I should. Thanks Matt for getting in my head 😝
I think Covid has made us all quite risk averse and I’m definitely feeling the itchy feel now of wanting to do some new things after such a long time “holding still”. Anxiety is really high at the moment and that’s really linked to fear/risk perception too. Lots to think about from this for sure!
I totally agree with this. One of the things I have struggled with before was to make my workouts fun or interesting again. I had worked out the same routine for quite a while that it became a little too boring. The fact that the workouts were really hard made me not want to do them as well. However, when I changed my time under tension, reps, and the variation of time under tension every other week...it has definitely made things so much better.
As someone who treasures stability this was really an eye opener. AMAZING VID AS ALWAYS 🤩

I took a risk and changed from working outside the home (for the past 15 years since graduating college) to working a different way from home. I was terrified of the risk of change until I did it. Best decision I ever made! I also started weight lifting a few years ago feeling the same fear of doing something totally new and now compete at it. Calculated change/risk makes life exciting!!
Such a great video, Matt. I went through a similar exercise back in 2020 when I decided I wanted to start a KZread channel. Thought real hard about what were the pros and cons of my decision and didn't want to have the voice in my head saying, "but what if..."
Matt, great video bro. You really helped me out with a tough decision.
I always think about the quote "Hope for the best, and prepare for the worst." It guides me to move to another country and landed a life I want in LA. When I'm thinking about making a shift on my career, I'm no longer afraid because I'm also strategically think about the calculated lost as well as rewards. So, my 2022 is to grow my KZread while maintaining my 9 to 5 job!
This really hit !!!!!
As a struggling freelance developer, I can relate to all what you said, I'm nowhere near where I want to be and was thinking I'm so much behind, but after seeing this video I came to realize that on the contrary I'm ahead a few steps, somehow we make things look worst in our mind but thinking reasonably you know what you have, and kiddos for pointing the worst case scenario, which is not that bad and it's also not that probable, that graph of the costs of actions/inactions helps viewing things for they are, thanks buddy
I have been more like the opposite my whole life 😂 Took the biggest risk of all 5 years ago by moving from France to the US and then I changed for a more « boring » life just staying with my kids at home☺️Now I feel like taking risks again, maybe go back to school 🤷🏾♀️ I guess it’s also a question of balance in your life. Find what you really want and need and be ready to go all the way. Great video as usual Matt 🙌🏾✨
