Bad habits are usually a way to cope with life's stress. Bad habits are easy, instantly gratifying and worse is that they feed the process itself of doing them again. Plus, I think the people around you greatly influence your habits. If you have people who got their shit together almost all the time and are mentally strong and organized, you're less likely to fall a victim to your impulses again, and it is very strong when they're your "accountability partners". I used to sit with my brother who slept 12 hours a day, played video games all day long and watched anime until he's at work, at 4pm specifically, where he works in a bar, and perhaps gets wasted when coming back home. I decided to leave because I didn't want him to drag me along, so I quit and it worked.

One major weapon I've deployed over the years is a simple act of delay /procrastination of the negative habit. Just like "I'll workout later" when a negative urge presents itself, telling myself I'll do it later, or after I finish this. It's all Mental Warfare, and the better able I am to hack the issues, the better I'm able to resolve them in time.

This video can be used on top of the videos which tell self-improvers to increase the “friction” between them doing the bad them. Because… it’s not just that but, also using the pull factor to stop doing the bad stuff even more by focusing on the “positive” habits that deter you from the bad ones. Nice, it’s very introspective :)

This is very true, bad habits can originate from stressful and dark times in life. Whether, you are working a job you hate, you lost your job, living at home etc, bad habits form to cope with your life. At the end your still unfulfilled because these temporary fixes such as weed, adult content, alcohol, hard drugs are used as copes.

the fundamental action to habit change is deciding to stop ✋ the habit. The surrounding circumstances are important and will not go away on their own, but stopping the habit will offer clarity. This is the opinion of someone who gave up alcohol four years ago after 30 years of increasingly chronic abuse. Be strong.

I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot lately. I’ve realized that I deeply believe myself to be inherently undesirable, unattractive, and unlikable by women and even men in a friendship/respect sense. I’ve noticed that the presence of these beliefs makes me feel awful about myself, and when I feel that bad way I hide from life by watching KZread on the couch for endless hours and beating off. When I don’t feel that way about myself, I’m very productive and healthy. Unfortunately I’m at the point of mostly observing the bad beliefs and behavior but not yet understanding them well enough to do any differently

Imagine the best version of yourself, like being fit, having a good jaw line due to not being fat, veins casually sticking out of your arms just from being sporty, you might not be able to change the physical structure of your face, but you can change your physique by going to the gym, you can change your hairstyle, and your clothes, start there and then that will put in in a feel good positive spiral in life, its like when you randomly start cleaning and get into that cleaning mood and clean the whole house for fun, do that but for your life, clean your life up to get in that mood so to speak, also have a purpose, learn boxing, crypto, investing, learn a language, be rich, sell something etc

Very interesting video! It’s nice to put it in perspective of being aware of what has been causing the bad habits to occur (either that be stress, trauma, a loss, etc.) and figuring out how to deal with those habits. As well as the positive things for what makes one be productive enough to forget about it all day! Now it’s totally fine to treat yourself every once in awhile, after all we are only human. But becoming WAY too consistent with it while feeling guilty about it, that’s when it becomes a bad habit. At least in my experience/opinion.

I have to say from my personal experience, when you start better habits and fall back into old habits, they feel really bad. I have that mostly with junk food. Back in the day it made me happy and it was hard to quit. But once I started to eat more and more healthy, I felt how bad junk food made me feel and it became less and less often taht I ate it. The feeling after eating it in turn became wors until I eventually completely quit it. Same as smoking cigarettes. After not smoking for a few months, I picked up one and it was disgusting so I never touched one again.

Something that was presented to me in CBT was that our thoughts influence our emotions and our emotions influence our actions. The easiest part of this cycle to intervene in is with one's thoughts. It takes time to change the way you think of things but if you can start to evaluate things more objectively, it can have a positive impact on the way you react.

Hey Cole, longtime fan. I have a question. I’ve been recently learning to take life slower and enjoy everyday as a result of me knowing I’m enough. But, there are times where I miss the thrill of chasing after a dream or a goal. How do I balance knowing I am enough along with chasing and fulfilling my goals and self improving? As humans we like to achieve things, and I can’t deny myself that as much as I have tried. If you could answer, or anyone could answer, that would be greatly appreciated.

What should I be journaling for “where am I feeling all of this in my body?” Like how my body feels while doing the activity/habit?

I have been smoking for 15 years now, but never got attached to it, i sometimes go months no smoking without even thinking about it.

I’d like to mention that the feelings your describing about loving oneself was my exact realization too. you aren’t you’re past you’re you now. I’d like to share something that helped me I was super deficient in vitamins, and testosterone and as soon as I supplemented and begin to change my bad habits I was less moody less distracted and more of a grateful person. I hope this helps!

Negative emotion is important biological data. It's important to be introspective and analyze from a third-person view of yourself, why you are feeling the way you are instead of ignoring it.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever heard is if you don’t find the right therapist even on the eighth try just keep trying, don’t fit yourself into your therapist your therapist should fit themselves into you. If you don’t feel like they’re giving you practical applications that help & that align with you? Fire them right away. Your life is on the line, you’re paying for their service don’t feel bad for cycling through therapist until you find the right one..
