Why you shouldn't trust YT reviewers - Orange Super Crush 100

Aren't you sick of these frauds? I friggin am... I've wasted loads of money trusting YT reviews with my gear purchases only to find that the REALITY is not in line with the paid shill REVIEW. Don't shoot the messenger.... perfect example right here.

I have this exactly this amp, I play it in a sludge metal band in drop C tuning and a stoner/shoegaze/post-rock band tuned down to baritone A, through a "shitey" Peavey Valveking 412 and it does high gain for me perfectly well. I bought my Supercrush to replace my 6505+ combo when it's transformer blew during covid and waited 14 months for a replacement. One of the best guitar related purchases I have ever made.

I have the Crush Pro 120 and with the bass & treble cranked all the way along with the mids at 10:00 it sounds perfect when you boost it with a Boss SD-1, especially with a lower output pickup like a Duncan Custom or probably even a set of PAF’s. I’ve gotten some really good 90’s Metal tones out of the Crush Pro 120 with an SD-1 in front using a Les Paul copy with a set of JB/59 pickups. I’m certain you can get similar tones out of a Super Crush 100 with the SD-1 in front. In general I’ve noticed the SD-1 is one of the greatest clean boosts of all time, even better than the Tube Screamer. Edit: I’ve also got a feeling that in terms of utilizing an SD-1 with an Orange amp there’s something magical about pairing an SD1 with an Orange for high gain, it’s like the SD-1 completes the Orange by adding everything that the amp alone is missing, while using the strengths of the amp to your advantage. I’ve also noticed that the SD-1 lets more of your amp’s natural tone shine through compared to a Tube Screamer. All the more reason as to why I love pairing the two together.

Agree, YT can be full of confusing reviews and thoughts. I bought this Super Crush hooked with Blacstar box a year ago for my death metal band. Well, once you set the gain at three o clock and high at the same value, you get very satisfying sharp brutal dozer sound. And still very specific and readable. But If you are fan of buzzing Panthera sound, which is also great, you are better to look for something different.

  • @rainemclellan208

Maybe not metal, not sure. I think with proper pedals, EQ, etc. you could easily get it there. But what I will say is this amp is excellent for other genres that don't necessitate cranked gain. I play in a hardcore-ish, punk-ish, emo-ish band and with my P90 Les Paul and an overdrive pedal to add a little grit, this amp fuggin slams.

KZread reviews should be a starting point only, not your final source of information before you go buying things. Before I buy my amps, I go to the store and try them myself. I've had an Orange Rocker 15 and I now have a Mesa Mark V 35 based on this way of evaluating, and I liked them both. I am currently looking for another Orange head, and will probably go for either this Supercrush 100 or shell out big bucks for the Rockerverb III and call it a day. Don't know which I want to do just yet. But yeah, don't make purchase decisions based on videos that are most likely sponsored anyway. Go and try it yourself.

I wish i had watched this before i bought mine, I would have been better off to buy a tube lunchbox amp. I am very stubborn when it comes to keeping my rig simple, i dont want to put an EQ in the loop and a bunch of other crazy shit to make the amp enjoyable to play in the room. I want to dial in the tone, stomp on a tube screamer and go. The only other pedals i want to run are a tuner and a noise gate. My dark terror sounded friggin great through a HB v30 2x12 in about 10 seconds. I just couldnt get into the supercrush. And the EQ doesnt fix it in my opinion. If Im going too give the SC any props, i would say its probably well suited as a quality beginner gigging amp for rock or punk, im sure it is way better than the crate half stack i had in highschool.

I've always been of the opinion that it you have to do a ton of post processing and effects and put so much effort into making something sound good.. then I don't want it. Not saying it should be plug and play.. but, a good rule of thumb to me is if it sounds good in the room or live, it'll translate well into a recording situation most likely and won't take much to get it to sound good in the mix. I'd rather spend time playing and writing music instead of tinkering and wasting time after the fact trying to make something sound just ok..

Never believe any reviews on YT where the channel is "gifted" the item for review they are not going to bite the hand that feeds them. There are some genuine honest channels on here but sadly they are a minority. Always be suspicous of a new product that is rated as the best ever, only to find out that when you buy one it is anything but the best. Classic examples are the infamous "Spark" amp, and the PRS Silver Sky SE, both were way overhyped creating a high demand, now the Siver Sky is heavily discounted, i wonder why? as for the Spark Amp, it sounds nothing like the demo's. The only option is try before you buy or if you have no choice make sure you buy from a store with a good returns policy. There is a lot of junk sold, just ensure that you know what you are buying.

It's pretty "insane" to me to suggest the supercrush is anywhere near as good as a rockerverb... Yes I've tried both. The RV doesn't lack the high end presence that the SC suffers from and has more depth and a fuller tone compared to the 2 dimensional boxy solid state sound the SC has. Why did I buy it? Because several YT shills hyped it up and made it sound great plus it was a good price to take a risk on. Never trusted YT marketing shills ever since.

If I think about what does it sound like with no help... closest thing I can think of is Nirvana. If you crank the gain all the way up the most it is gonna do is sound somewhat like the nevermind record. Shoving a Fortin grind in the front and eq on the back makes it much much better. I got this head because I already have a Randall RG3003h which has plenty of gain and I just wanted something a little different. SC100 is a good pedal platform. It's preamp is definitely not designed for high gain metal. With the boost and eq it can hang but it definitely needs a lot of help.
