Why you should ( or shouldn't ) consider a ES-339.

Музыка

In today's video I make the case for why you should consider adding a 339 style instrument to your collection. There is no playing in this video, but I try to go over some lesser discussed features and playability experiences this kind of guitar has to offer. I really miss this one, but such is life. I have a Gibson ES-339, a Gibson ES-335, and a Gibson Les Paul R9. I respectively disagree. My 339 does not sound like my Les Paul. If you like to play with a lot of overdrive, then they can all sound pretty much alike. I mean if you listen to the live version of Crossroads by Cream, that 335 sounds like a Les Paul. Playing without pedals, the 339 sounds much more like a 335 to me. Thanks for your video.

    Thanks Sam and fair enough, when I was tracking with all three through the amps I was using it was to my ears very obvious that the one that was the easiest to identify was the 335. The 339 and the Les Paul I had were very, very similar in pro tools to the point I started questioning why I had both. Lovely guitars, and I appreciate the comment

    I have a 2022 Epiphone ES-339 that is a great instrument. I really like the upgrades from the earlier models. The tuners are better, the electronics are better. The headstock shape is a little better looking. I think its a great guitar for the money.

    He is right the 339 isn’t quite as big sounding as the 335, but it’s hardly worth mentioning. Mine feeds back in the most musical way, I love the 339. It’s a great option for smaller people who don’t like the size of the 335.

    Great video and the point about it being closer to an LP than a 335 is important as it’s very different from a 335 like you say and many people assume that’s not the case. Is a fantastic instrument though!

    I just wouldn't want someone to buy this expecting it to do the job of a 335... it simply won't do it. Amazing guitar, but that's not in it's wheelhouse.

    My son got an Eastman Rd 335 and he really likes it, he's a worship guitarist and originally didn't like the big body 335 but he tried a 70's Walnut Greco and was hooked. Unfortunately at the time he didn't have the money to buy that Greco but eventually he got a good paying job and found out about Eastman and got a really good deal on one that was brand new at a used price so he grabbed it. He put some Geppetto Camelot pick ups and bingo no need for a Gibson 335

    Agree with your assessment. We lucked into an Epiphone ES-339 with Lindy Fralin P90’s and love the weight factor and shorter scale. Great for the four or five songs that need the P90 sound then back to strats, Jags and Jazzmasters for the rest of the set.

    In 2013 I bought a B stock Epi 339 for under $400. My tech and I weren't positive of the issue that made it a B stock, but were pretty sure it was the black trim paint around the F holes. With a touch-up brush, that was easily remedied. My tech replaced the plastic nut with a bone nut, gave it a pro setup, and polished the frets to a mirror shine. It was vastly improved, but never sounded all that great. I briefly considered new pickups, but I didn't like the small frets, nor the D-shaped neck. Just got its replacement - a D'Angelico Premiere Mini DC; my second D'Angelico. Fantastic guitar! Perfect upper fret access. They're $900 USD, but the Sweetwater XT (their exclusive) has the Seymour Jazz/JB pickups, and locking tuners. It easily smokes the Epi and kind of hangs with my Gibson Les Pauls, but they're just far too different, in a good way.

    I like those the D'Angelicos, and love that you can often get them for such a great price. I would also take one of those over the Epiphone. I've played a lot of the Epiphone 339's and the only thing it really had in common with my Gibson was the actual aesthetic. I get what you mean about it hanging with les pauls, this small semi hollows are indeed capable of getting you pretty close to what a regular LP would do.

    I have an es345tdc cherry red. It’s my best sounding guitar. I had a chance to get a 339 and passed. Had no need for it with my 345 crushing it. Don’t forget about that one in the gibson lineup. Also had a chance to get a heritage prospect and should have got it. That’s one I regret not buying. Heritage makes great guitars.

    Since the 339 is merely a bad copy of the Ibanez AM200/50 from the early 80s (which was a smaller version of their 335 copy), you SHOULD consider the AM93, the current affordable version from Ibanez. Ibanez made this shape first. Anything else is just a copy. LOL!

    I have the D'Angelico Mini DC - thats 339 shape. But the fret access is MUCH better than Les Paul, the neck is very slim. So it just differs from brand to brand. I bought this guitar to only play Jazz, 335 sounds better in my opinion, but we buy 339 considering its beauty as well. At least to me 339 aesthetically looks way better. Id rather get a proper Jazz box than 335 just because how flat, huge and unproportional it looks.. My D'Angelico 339 is still a little bit heavy though.. and it neck-dives a little as well.

    I have a Les Paul and I really really want an es 339. Will getting a 339 be a waste since I already have a Les Paul?? I will be keeping the Les Paul. I also have a tele, so the 339 would complete my roster…

  • @AudiomoMusic

    @AudiomoMusic

    I don't think it would be a waste at all, they play and feel very different and I found myself using the 339 far more than the LP for performing both because of weight and the imho more lively clean tones. I'd say find one in person and really judge from there but they are incredible.

    Having tried a number of semi acoustic guitars, i just can't bond with them. The 335 is just way too large to feel comfortable with, the 339 is smaller but it still feels more like a slim acoustic than an electric to play for any length of time. I still keep going back to my S shaped bodies with wide slim necks.
