In this Gibson and Epiphone ES buyer’s guide, Dinesh walks us through some of the best semi-hollowbody guitars on offer from Gibson Brands. The video includes Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab Aged ES-335 and ES-355 models, Gibson USA ES-335 guitars, and a pair of Epiphone ES guitars, proving beyond doubt that when it comes to versatile all-rounders, the ES-335 is one of the best ever made. And yes the ES-335 DOES do metal!
Sometimes nicknamed the “Burst Killer” because of its supreme versatility and sheer quality of tone, since its introduction in 1958 the Gibson ES-335 electric guitar has been used in all genres, including blues, jazz, country, rock, and even metal thanks to its humbucking pickups.
The semi-hollowbody design provides incredible resonance, airy jangle and a full-bodied sound, making it equally effective as a singer-songwriter’s rhythm instrument or a lead-guitar hero’s go-to model for blazing solos. In addition, combined with the three-way toggle pickup selector switch, the pair of volume and tone controls for each pickup delivers a huge palette of sounds and will be instantly familiar to players of Gibson’s Les Paul and SG models.
In this video Dinesh, walks us through some of the differences between several types of ES guitars, comparing the ES-335 to the ES-355, and Epiphone versus Gibson models to help you learn what sets semi-hollow body guitars apart from solidbody instruments in terms of the sound they produce and they way they interact with amplification.
Think a Gibson ES might be the only guitar you need but don’t know which model to choose? Start here.

    I have a 79 Les Paul Custom that gives sounds so pleasant to the ear and I wanted a 335 - but the prices were out of my range at that time so I bought a Epi 335 that were on sale at Guitar Center and it played like butter but the pickups had virtual no tonal color so I switched them out for some genuine Gibson pickups and now that 335 sounds so gooood . Its really makes some haunting and beautiful chordal and pedal tones - its amazing! I'm real happy with genuine Gibson pickups and recommend them to anybody wanting to get way better sounds out of their guitar.

    Can you make a video like this to compare Epiphone ES guitars along with all the other similar thinner bodied semi-hollow and hollows like the Emily Wolfe Sheraton, Riviera, etc.? That would be extremely helpful to compare them all side by side. Semi-hollows and hollows are a huge part of Epiphone history. A comparison of everything in the lineup and advice regarding what each model is typically suitable for certain types of players and styles of music would help! Tyvm!

    Most of not all Epiphone & pretty much every other hollow & semi-acoustic guitars are made with maple bodies (in plys or layers) & a mahogany or maple neck. This tends to make them brighter sounding guitars than say a Gibson solid body with mahogany construction.

    Hollow guitars will of course sound louder unplugged & because of the bigger body they will sound deeper & richer & more resonant but that also means more overtones & feedback when you get into higher volumes & more gain which can be a awesome effect all in its own but hard to control.

  • @ahiwalter9153

    @ahiwalter9153

    Semi-hollows offer a lot of that benefit, resonance, overtone & acoustic properties even at higher volumes & with gain, but they can also get out of control, just not as easily, the neck of a ES style guitar can take some getting used to & the position of the strap button can be tricky as well.

    The main thing I would say is both are larger bodies than an electric & should be tried out to see if they are to your comfort level. They are wonderful guitars & can be used for any genre really (ted nugent, George thorougood & plenty of punk rock, rockabilly players use hollow bodies with lots of volume & gain). I think they offer a lot of versatility & can be used when you can’t plug in to still practice.

    I have a couple Gibson straps approaching 10 years old that I really admire. They were expensive back then, but still my favorite straps. Next level soft, obviously very high quality. I keep looking for anything new but there was a few years where there were no Gibson straps. Hopefully that changes and Gibson returns to making next level straps to compliment their fine instruments. Fret over binding, or NIBS, I believe they’re called are standard on two of my Gibson guitars and it’s a feature that makes them stand apart from every other guitar. I know… it’s not easy to do. It’s all hand work, but I’m looking for that detail. Respectfully, of course.

    I was looking for a lot more info on the Epiphone vs. the Gibson 335. After viewing a lot of these comparisons, i.e. Fender squires vs. the more expensive Fenders, Gibson vs. Epiphone, etc., there seems to be a hesitance to really say that most of the price on the more expensive units is due to the Gibson logo on the tuning board or where the "Fender" was produced. (If this is, in fact, the case. I recently purchased both an Epiphone ES335 in "blueberry burst" and one of the new Sire H7's that Larry Carleton promotes, and they are pretty darned nice. I have played the Gibson 335 and I can't justify the extra expense except for maybe the collector. Still waiting to see an honest comparison of these products and how they perform and sound, comparatively.

    Side note to people looking at the smaller 339/356 models. They do NOT feel nothing like their bigger ES-335/345/355 models. What makes the ES-3X5 amazing is where the neck connects to the body, giving you that easy upper fret access. With the smaller 359/356 models they connect closer to the the upper fretboard, not giving you the same upper fret access feel. Just be weary of that if you buy from a shop with no returns allowed and seeing how hard it is to play one on person. Try out the epiphone 339, same shape/construction to give you a feel

    You guys are so remarkably out of touch. The first guitars you show in the video are the Custom Shop guitars. This is all well and good for Doctor and Lawyer Weekend Rockers, but how about folks that actually play guitar on the regular? I was brought up in a Gibson house 100%. I believed in the brand deeply and used Gibson for nearly all of the work that I was doing...until something went off the rails the last decade. Your competitors down in Corona, CA are doing a far better job reaching a wider audience with their net. It also feels like the ONLY guitars you folks put much effort into are the Custom Shop and Murphy Lab guitars. My friend received a guitar from Sweetwater that went through your 55 point inspection and the 55 point inspection that Sweetwater tells us they are doing and yet the electronics on his Les Paul special were completely backwards. I want to love this company again, but the prices keep going up and the quality for the affordable, true "player" editions keep going down. I'm not even sure this will make a difference with any of you at Gibson because I'm guessing this just comes off as a rambling and negative response that is a needle in a haystack. I promise you - there are more needles out there than you think and I don't care about what the sales numbers and projections are telling you. Gibson is NOT what we once knew. Young players aren't using Gibson guitars.
