In this excerpt from our behind-the-scenes tour of the Gibson Custom Shop, Gibson Gear Guide host Dinesh joins Tyler and Dustin from Gibson Custom to showcase some of the coolest Made to Measure custom orders, featuring unique and personalized guitars designed by Gibson customers. Join them as they explore the unique specs and design choices behind these one-of-a-kind, custom-designed Gibson Custom Made to Measure guitars.
We pick out some of the best and most interesting Made to Measure Gibson Custom guitars, including a Frost Blue ES-355-a custom order with a non-core color, designed to emulate a 1959 ES-355 with a long pickguard and Maestro™ Vibrola™, finished with Murphy Lab Ultra Light Aging for that vintage look.
Dinesh also picks out a Les Paul with a Purple Void finish. This 70s-style Deluxe features P-90 Soapbars instead of the typical mini-humbuckers and a 1976-inspired design, including a neck volute, as specified by the customer.
Following that is a special-order Les Paul Custom, with split block inlays and three pickups. This guitar showcases a rare white finish, making it a standout from the traditional Black Beauty design you might typically see. We also pick out a custom-designed Made to Measure ’54 Gibson Les Paul with a mini-humbucker in the bridge position and a staple pickup at the neck, paired with a Gibson custom color and Waffleback® tuners.
Next, we see a Gibson Custom Made to Measure SG with Goldtop cosmetics-a creative blend of an SG Standard and 1956 Les Paul. Have you ever wondered, “What if the Gibson SG had been introduced in 1956?” This is what it would look like.
Dinesh and Dustin also check out a Burl Maple Gibson Les Paul Custom, which is a historically inspired Les Paul Custom with a Natural finish on a burl maple top. And we get to see a custom-ordered Made to Measure Green Iguana/Green Tea Burst ’59 ES-335, a historic ’59 ES-335 with a heavily figured veneer and a striking Green Tea Burst finish, blending vintage details with modern aesthetics.

Back in December of 2018 I put in a M2M order through The Music Zoo for a Les Paul Special (Contoured mahogany body, flame maple top, cherry finish, ebony fretboard, no neck binding). After about a year and a half I canceled the order because I felt like it was taking too long to build such a simple guitar. Looking back, I should have just waited for it. It definitely would have been a good one.

You aren't their only customer. Not sure if you know that. There was a line of people ahead of you. They don't have 150 guys doing these. Meaning they don't start building it right when you order. Seems like you didn't know this and assumed theyre supposed to begin as soon as the order goes in.

Hurts you call that simple, if you ever get the chance you should try again. It would be worth the wait! Sounds like a dream guitar that deserves the time to come out right.

@@zaccarter3801 and it makes no, sense because none of that is what makes a Les Paul Special. Personally, I doubt the whole story. He just described a Les Paul Standard. It makes no sense to order a Special and then have it built like your everyday LP Standard. Nobody would do that. They'd order a standard. People that order Specials do it because of the way they're built and the appointments they come with. Nobody orders a Special and then removes everything that makes it a Les Paul Special. It's not a Special at that point, anyway.

@@J.C... well he could mean contour as in like a body contour where you rest your arm and not an arch top. I mean I get a maple top also ruins the special vibe, but I’d dig it. My dream M2M sounds unfeasible but I want it to work: firebird V with an extra thick body/neck thru center, so that it can have a flame maple cap that is arched. Make the flame maple wings a dirty lemon burst and the center/back mahogany red aniline dye stain, creme firebird pickguard and plastics. Everything else normal firebird specs: mini hums, banjo tuners, historic neck profile.
Did anyone else hold their breath while he was juggling two insanely expensive M2M Les Pauls just inches from each other?

Hey Gibson. What if I wanted a M2M that's like Dickey Betts' last SG? That Les Paul/SG Hybrid you guys built for him? Could you do that? Or do I need to be Duane Betts for something like that? 🤷 Actually, you need to make a Signature SG just like those 2 you built for him. IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL BUY. Seriously. I've seen countless people say they'd buy one if you actually priced it normally and not at $25-50k
