Ohhh yeahhh... The 9300 Mudman is an absolute CLASSIC! I'm a former US Army paratrooper & the 9300 was my go-to "jump watch". I used the compass to orient myself and get my face into the wind after exiting the aircraft. Also, as an avid scuba diver, I used this badboy to not only track water temperature, but for underwater navigation as well. I ended up gifting the watch to a mate of mine as he was preparing to deploy overseas. Both he and the watch came home safely.

Good review. You're right about the identity crisis between the Mudman and the Rangeman, but i think it goes back to the previous version. I'm looking for the old Mudman that you have, but in the positive version. In my country, I only found the negative version for almost 150 USD. I have the Mudman from 2011, and even though I don't engage in outdoor activities as much as before, I try to enjoy it from time to time.

I think you summed this one up perfectly Russ. Certainly I prefer the G9000 but I can't justify yet another G-Shock just yet although I've said that many times before getting another G-Shock. I have to agree that the tiny flaw is the inability to actually tell the time on it with the negative display. Maybe it's worth a look at the positive version if Casio release new colours for it. The nearest watch that I have to the Mudman is the old old Mudmaster GWG-1000 that is a big watch and quite heavy but wears on the wrist really comfortably, it's solar, multi band 6, triple sensor, analogue (second hand works as the compass in compass mode) and negative digital display (that you can read). I'll be sticking with that. Thanks for sharing.

It's the compass layer that dims the display so i'd just say go with a GBD-100 or 200, H2000 as well as the upcoming Rangeman that gives the same vibe as this. All the same MIP display. My GBD 200 with negative display is very crisp and easy to read.

then get the rangerman, update it, turn of HR monitoring , set a screen without steps on it and unpair it.. now you have a regular g-shock where the battery last months or years as long as you dont use the GPS. Being able to charge the watch by cable is needed on any watch with GPS as solar is not enough. Also this watch can get its time through GPS. Get the rangerman you wont regret it. just turn off the HR monitor and unpair it.

While you and some viewers mentioned wishing it had a mip display, i dunno. Instead of a duplex lcd i really wish it had an STN LCD so you can actually read it. They're like magic, and several protreks with similar features have had them at this price point. The duplex is cool in the -1 positive display module, which you can actually read but seems totally useless in the neg... as is the whole display. A tool watch you can't read? Why?

Sadly had the same problem when I ordered the Casio AE-1500WH-8B2VEF with negative display which on the product photos looked like it would be very easy to tell the time. But in reality made it very hard since the screen just looked black. To have to use the light button even in daytime to be able to see the time felt just bonkers so I returned it. Think I saw something about negative displays having some sort of polarizing(?) filter, that need to be turned just the right way to make the display work properly. If that is the case, could it be a manufacturing problem and quality control issue that the filter is positioned wrongly making the display black instead of clear for the time?

At certain angles the Mudman seems to be more legible then the Rangeman , both have the gold negative display. I bought the Positive display(GW-9500-1) first for $230.00 US dollars and then bought the GW-9500-3 Negative display like yours for $220.00 US dollars from the same seller in Singapore. Like you , I definitely think it's more a upgraded Rangeman then a Mudman. By the way , I love your channel , your humor and your wife's opinion. Great review !!!!!!!!!

Hi there and thanks for the great video! I've bought the new GW-9500-3 Mudman to compare it to my beloved GW-9400-3 (both green). I must admit, though: The new 9500 is indeed more readable than the old 9400 at almost any angle despite the duplex LCD, at least for me it is! I have discovered a strange phenomenon on my G-Shocks I owned so far and would like to know if you or someone else could help me. Being in a place without radio connection I mostly rely on manually correcting the time. Now, over the years I have observed something I haven't read about anywhere (and another channel only had a general info about different factors causing quartz crystal irregularities that affect accuracy): The accuracy of an individual watch seems to vary! E.g. the 9400 I have has been CONSISTENTLY off about +2 secs per month after the last atomic correction by radio 7 months ago, now I manually set it, and it will be around 1 sec slow per month! That is not the only G-Shock I have observed behaving like this, temperature or mechanical reasons are definitely not the cause. Now my question is, what could cause it? I have tried varying the length of pressing the button that resets the seconds, but it has not made a difference. Do you or anyone else have a clue about what's going on? It would also help me decide which of the two watches I will keep (the 9500 going even a little slower still after several setting attempts). Thanks very much!

The only thing I liked about it was its relatively low weight and thickness. As for the rest, I would definitely choose the good old g-9000 again. I'm rocking the g9300 for about 7 years, it's awesome, super legible, extremely resistant, the solar battery it's always full, mine takes almost a year to lose a minute which is absolutely fine by me, I set it every 4 or 5 months and I'm fine, and I used the compass more times than I though I would, to see if my Google maps that it's telling me to go forward is right, guess what, almost always it's not, it helps to rotate the map to the direction you are actually facing, there are other ways to find that out, but that's just super fast and I like it. But it's bulky, I'm 5"11 and 230ish pounds ex Rugby player with an 8 inch wrist, it looks good on me, but even I sometimes find it kinda bulky, if you don't have broad shoulders to match the broad watch it might look a bit disproportional for some, but if you like the way you look with it, get one, because it's an awesome watch.

This is exactly why last year in 2023 when i needed a tough watch to wear doing construction i bought a GW9400-1 and not one of these new models which absolutely miss the mark with the most important feature of a watch, the ability to see the damn time. Last week i was looking to add another G-Shock to the collection because one can never have too many. My pick? GWX-5600-1JF. A square with MB6, Tough Solar, a fantastic display, looks great and wears like a dream. Oh yeah, and no bluetooth, no thanks. Like you said, theres a reason we still buy squares in 2024. Didnt even know theres a new rangeman coming out, to be honest, it looks awful and ill take my GW-9400 over it any day. If i want to know my pulse I’ll put my fingers on my wrist.

I think its great G shock now give you a compass I quite often need to draw circles. There should be the option to wear it showing the case back, far better looking that way.

I have the rangeman 9400 in green with negative display, and I can confirm that the display is not good either, I pressed the light button always to see the time, day or night.

I already have GW-9400Y Rangeman. But got the positive display version of this Mudman last week for £174.50 from Ernest Jones with a further 10% off code so paid £157.05! I do actually find the compass really useful and like the overlaid display, walking in a town I don't know I find a printout of a map and a compass far better than Google Maps on the phone. Display is nice and big and simple, date "TH30" rather than "THU 5-30" which I love as I don’t need to know the month nor the 3rd letter of the day! Fits my small wrist much nicer than the size may suggest. I would definitely recommend it.

Finally a ProTrek PRG-340-3 style Dual LCD!!!! for the Compass, Baro and Alti complications. Basically the same guts..The Toyota version GW-9500TLC-1 $440.00 is cool. They teamed up with Toyota Land Cruiser and Auto Body..But this model for half the price is great...GREAT REVIEW.

Hi : 1) You didn’t mention the great added feature: sunrise/sunset!! Now if they’d just add the moon phase this’d be the total outdoor timepiece. 2) seems more to me like an upgraded Pro Trek than an upgraded Rangeman.

It's disappointing that there is no MIP display; such a missed opportunity. I have 2 MIP Casios that are less than half the price. I was aiming for the one with a negative display because I have some Casios with negative display that are quite visible(some of them cost 40$). I was thinking that the visibility would be similar on this one. Boy, was I wrong! When I picked up the watch in the store, I thought that the screen was broken due to the challenging lighting conditions. However, I picked up the standard version and I quite like it.

Agreed about negative displays going away. I loathe those ghastly things. Also agreed about the weird barnacle look of some G-Shocks. My only G-Shocks I own currently are the DW5610 and the Rangeman. I love them both very much. All the rubbish negative displays and the strange designs already mentioned have caused me to stop buying G-Shocks. Fine with me. Square G-Shocks forever!!! Cheers!🙂

I am a G-Shock square addict, but also a Rangeman buyer so when the new Rangeman is replaced by the "needs to be charged " "smart version" I will not be buying that at all , maybe this non smart cross between the Range and Mud will do me , positive display only tho' I wonder is it possible to switch insides between green and black versions ?

The barnacle:, I can only bare with them because I am as big as a sasquatch. I have a GWG1000 and I do agree that they must go. The compass is a nice gimmick that has brought me back to safety, the barometer is the most useful thing on the watch alongside the time telling. Weirdly enough, I think the most useless thing is the thermometer since it boils down to, are you hot or are you cold.

I disagree! What you call “futuristic barnacles” aren’t fashion statements, it’s functional. The raised portion protects the screen. The lowered part allows drainage. Mud pools on the screen of the old Mudman and old squares. Not this one.
