Oh snap I made it into an Nsima video haha. #6 Reason to start BJJ - The people! You'll meet a bunch of really cool goal oriented people. The vast majority of people in the BJJ community literally want to see you succeed. Almost everyone was intimidated to start off. So, when you walk in the gym for the first time just know that everyone else in class was in your shoes and they are usually more than happy to help you fit in.

I’ve been training Jiu Jitsu for a little over a year and it has pretty much changed who I am as a person. I went from 270 to 220 pounds, it’s motivated me to start lifting, but most of all I’m no longer afraid to go out. I’ve dealt with anxiety my entire adult life because of childhood trauma and one thing that’s always hard to deal with is conflict because as a kid conflict meant violence and I was always the smaller weaker person. Jiu Jitsu has given me the ability to face that without that fear of violence because if it does go to that I have the tools to defend myself. Of course I’d never go out looking for trouble and I’m not a badass, just a white belt that’s been training for a year, but even with my little bit of experience I feel like a completely different person than I was when I started.

Jiu Jitsu is the antithesis of anxiety. Even if you have never felt claustrophobic you will when you start bjj, & you will learn to be comfortable when facing discomfort this is when your anxiety disorders, your lack of self confidence will melt away (along with extra bodyfat).

@@erwinwayne3129no reason to be scared. look online for nearby gyms and check out the best reviewed. They usually have a week free trial and you can figure out which gym you like. Everyone is usually very welcoming and the head instructor will assign you with partners that should take it easy on you (it’s also a good idea to tell them you’re a brand new beginner, though they’ll figure that out in seconds if they have any more than a few months experience). The hardest part is starting. Just give a gym a call and you should be able to go in as soon as the same day!

Hey man. Today is my first day I'll start doing Juijitsu. Im 62 years old, I have over 30 years in boxing not (Pro). I live a vegetarian lifestyle, I don't drink or smoke. I have to say this video was very encouraging especially for the physical challenges I'll be facing that are different from boxing. Honestly, I feel so healthy to do this because of my food intake lifestyle. I'm approaching it from a need to learn POV. Again,, thank you for your advice and point of view.

You bring up some great points in this video. Martial arts are a great way to diversify workouts and incorporate "improper alignment" as Ido Portal says, improving mobility and range of motion in all other activities we do, whether its bodybuilding, powerlifting, running, yoga, soccer, etc. After my first class, my entire body was sore! From my neck to my calves. Strength and cardio training in one. Doesn't get more complete than that. Its also cool seeing you get a little more comfortable in front of the camera as you start talking about why you love Jiu Jitsu and sharing your experience with it.

Trained in and coached stand up arts for years and just joined BJJ 6 months ago at an older age, but I am loving it. Truly humbling, etc. But it goes beyond that and it's hard to put into words. It's truly a journey. Excellent point on teh powerlifting, etc. We have a few competition champion lifters in our gym as well as bodybuilders and like you lost a ton of fat fast that shocked even them. We have an old Olympic medalist power lifter as one of our coaches, and well he COMPLETELY sucks to roll with. he's like a freakin gorrilla playing with food when he rolls with people. Good thing he's a nice guy lol.

I come from rock climbing background , and our grip strength , flexibility , and isometric strength has been huge for grappling . Just encouraging people who might not be the most big or strongest , jujitsu can still really be something you can be good at as well!! ❤ 🐺

I started because I am and always have been a quiet and non confrontational person, which gives some people the assumption that I'm weak. Since training in bjj, the inner confidence it's given me to know that IF anything were to happen physically with me, my wife, or my family, I'll be the one who decides how it's going to end. It's changed my life and made me a better person. I'd go as far to say the life skills I've gained off the mat far outweigh the self defense skills I've attained, although those skills are awesome too 😉

The one concern and question I would appreciate your insight into is how frequent or common impact is to the groin area? Yes I started with traditional Japanese Jujutsu Ryu and ninjutsu nimpo bugei martial arts as practiced by the ninja and samurai of Japan. I recently started bjj due to covid and my dojo closing down for the duration. Thinking bjj was similar to traditional Japanese Jujutsu Ryu, no I can say it's not really but having just done my first week it's very different form of Jujutsu than what I have done to date. So am starting from scratch however there are similarities between the two. I like bjj also so far hope it helps

I rarely...if ever speak on training.....but this guys journey sounds exactly like mine. With the exception of competition lol.... But seriously....I noticed jiu-jitsu was great for keeping my body fat....at the athelete range...single digit-13% I started in 2011....and I train in the present....admittedly....only about 4-5 years actual mat time in that decade. I love it.......11 year white belt. 44 years old Still benchpress 400 Still deadlift 450 With a pathetic squat of 350 lol Suffice to say I enjoyed this....because I love jiu-jitsu......

I started BJJ at 62 .. I've always been in great Shape since i was 10 years old TKD Boxing Karate Swimming Jogging Very Flexible, Yoga ect. At 62 i decided to go & get Humbled & CRUSHED .... I have no injuries from the past NONE 0 at all..... But I always Train Smart 53 years now of training.... When you roll ,Roll Slow & FLOW , NON of this Smashing rolling, you won't learn anything & roll With Blue belts & Up don't roll with White belts like yourself cause thats when injuries happen ... So far over 1 year Bjj & Do Injuries... Wish The OLD MAN Luck....

Just to touch bodybuilding and bjj. It depends on your goals in bodybuilding. IF you are an IFBB pro or that’s your goal it’s probably not worth the risk for injuries. However if that’s not your goal then I 100% agree.

Nsima hi my name is Glenn. I really enjoyed this vid about the five reasons for starting Jiu Jitsu. I’m really wanting to start training however I’m 64 years old, and do you think I can really get into it and keep training for years to come? I want to really but I guess I’m just second guessing myself. What is your honest opinion? I’m really really thinking about it! Thank you for your time. Peace!

I got put into an americana and injured a tendon in my elbow, I've been poked in the eye, put in an armbar where the guy is pulling as hard as he can, luckily I escaped position or my arm would be broken, I've had many other really close calls during sparring and ultimately got discouraged from it in 2016 as I didn't want a potentially permanent injury. My goal is to get stronger and more flexible/mobile, then I may come back to training at a different place or start muay thai.
