I am from India and here the educational system is difficult and not useful ,btw I am the topper of my class and later this year I will give boards exam which are like Indian SAT of 10th class,and this year our school divided our class in section based on our percentage of 9th I am in A section with all the nerds like me...but grades our really sometimes useless like most of the toppers of section A are like rata mar if u know Hindi it means a person who is learning just without understanding basically they don't even have the idea about what is this why they are doing this they just learn for getting marks but not for learning ,so I think marks can't tell about a persons intelligence but can tell about the hardwork they are capable of doing...

I think school is about learning things you actually need in life. But school isn’t doing that. Like, ‘real life application questions’ : an Apple costs x dollars, tim bought 2 apples and spent $5 find x. Totally very useful. I think school is to provide the resources we need to accomplish our dreams. Not teach us things that we hate and will probably never use

@@needshelpwithprocrastination I agree school is to set you up for success in life. Much of that is making you an asset to society because only when you have valuable skills can you earn more money. Part of that might be engineering and kids wouldn’t know they have a knack or fondness for that industry if they don’t learn math. You won’t feel this in school but in the real world after college, if you can’t do basic algebra or have a sense of numbers, you can easily be scammed in several ways. Seen it with my own eyes and experience!

Last year, I was in one of the top school in France that prepares you during two years to pass a national exam to get you in prestigious engineering universities. Basically, right after high school, you give two years of your life when you have to study 24/7 for two years. During my whole school years, I have always been the top achiever, valued by teachers and so on... The thing is that I never had to study really hard because I would just understand everything in class really fast and I would just study "for the form" to get the best mark at home. As I said, last year, I went to that elite school to prepare for that exam. Everything went wrong from the beginning. Indeed, I could not understand anything during class and had to study tremendous hours to understand very little. Every time that I had to sit at my desk to study, I would just feel very anxious, eating my nails staring at the content of the course not knowing where I should start, what I should do. Because for all those years, I did not set up a study routine, I never imagined what process I could undergo when I don't understand the content. Basically, I did not know how to learn. Prior that year, during my school years, everything would just stick to my head, make sense. But now that I was facing my classes not having a clue of what was going on, I was just so helpless, so confused, so embarrassed. You know, I was working very hard (but not efficiently because I was so stressed out by the fact that maybe I won't be able to understand the content) and I remember teachers telling me that I was so lazy. That I just don't study. I remember going to my maths teacher and telling him I did not know how to manage all that content, that it seems like I did not have time to understand. So he told me to find a method, study techniques that worked for me and left. So here I was, trying to understand my lessons, preparing every week a test I could not understand what it actually was about, sleep deprived (like a lot of people that prepare for that national exam), anxious, humiliated by teachers, called lazy. I left one year after. No self-confidence, no self-esteem, hate towards my brain, really regretful to not have invested in understanding what study method suited my brain. During summer holidays, I would just escape the reality using my phone all day long, unable to sit at a desk because I was worried that I actually was so stupid to understand anything. All of that happened last year. Now I am in another engineering school retaking my first year. I am learning a lot on how my brain works, how to actually learn and I met you Amy. We say that every cloud has a silver lining. You were my light when my path seemed so bleak. Thanks for everything ! And if someone reads that long comment (maybe full of mistakes sorry), I hope that you can all learn from the darker episodes of your life. For me, thanks to that past dreadful year, I learned to build a real confidence (It seems superficial but I really thought I had confidence in myself before loosing my good grades), to invest in my health (currently on a fitness journey), to respect myself whatever the circumstances, to learn to create real bonds with people, to enjoy the process, to regain my curiosity that school made me loose. Also, I am really resilient. So thanks a lot past dreadful year because you made me wiser. Have a good day !

I am really sorry that people who actually need this video won't even be playing it looking at the duration of the video, I really appreciate your efforts in making these videos with your examples and really giving some clarity about the school, jobs, life, etc. I actually prefer these kinds of videos over shorter ones.

Sorry if I ramble but I need to say all of this. I am a junior in HS and this video is basically what I've been trying to preach to others. I am ranked 7 in my class of 400 some people and I've recently battled cancer. Going into my freshman year and through the first half of my sophomore year, my mindset was exactly what the school system brainwashed children to think: I must get good grades to show that I am capable. Now I didn't have "Asian parents", but I did have the mentality of someone who had the good grade policy drilled into their head. I could go on for hours about why this is so irritating for me, but I'll try to keep it short. The American education system sucks. That's the TLDR. It is terrible, abominable, and downright disgusting. It's all about image. Image. Have to look good. Have to get good grades to get good jobs. Have to be smart to be successful. Intelligence is defined by grades. Grades define success. This idea of education is so infuriating to me but I know it's all about looking good for the big cheeses. Now, when I hit my second semester of sophomore year, my cancer battle started, and it didn't end until the beginning of my junior year. I had to drop two classes and get a refund for an AP exam because I wasn't physically or mentally capable of passing it and not blowing $98 down the drain. When I started my junior year, I realized something so important that every kid NEEDS to know: people shouldn't approach school with the mindset that they have so very unfortunately been force-fed their entire life; instead, they should understand that knowing how to improve themselves as people, including but not limited to: critical thinking, problem solving, economical understanding, reading, writing, and natural world understanding. You said it so well, Amy. Life doesn't follow a syllabus. Syllabuses in HS are just another step in the education system's greedy path to put kids on a path that will make them look good and in turn make the system look good. I am so upset by this, and how assignments are handed to students, that I can't even begin to word it any deeper right now. Which brings me to my next point: grades. This video has stolen all of what I could've ever thought of. Bravo. I would like to reiterate it, though, because it helps me get it off my chest. Grades are such a ridiculous way of tracking "success" and "progress", and the grades you are given mean basically nothing about how {insert characteristic here} you actually are. Not everyone is going to understand a topic, and some people will understand it at a much slower rate than others. We call these students "core kids", and we call the "further ahead" students "honors/gifted" kids. Are you having a laugh, America? THAT is what we're labeling kids in SECOND GRADE? Let me say that again. SECOND... grade. I understand it separates students into classes where they learn at a better-suited pace, but the fact that kids are constantly reminded of their status, along with their measurements of success, is despicable because none of them feel like they are good enough when they are handed a B and told, "Do better next time. That will be on the final." Oh, please. You said it perfectly: the most successful people weren't spoon-fed material and told, "You're incredible. Because of those grades, you may be the next big thing!" They weren't good in school, but they had the skills they needed to figure out the things they did. Why am I being told by my teachers that, because I am ranked seventh in my class, I am likely going to be more successful than most? I'd like to point out that one of my unfortunately few friends (haha get it I have few friends because I'm forced to do well in school and balance work and volunteering and other hobbies) is going to be a car mechanic who doesn't go to college. HE will be more "successful" (I use this word in terms of money, because the system wants you to have good grades to acquire a good job and stimulate the economy) than almost EVERYONE in my school. Car mechanics make HUGE amounts in many areas of the country. But oh no, he's failing half of his classes and doesn't have the best grades in the classes he ISN'T failing. Well, riddle me this, how is it that his work ethic is extremely good? How is it that he's pushed through moving countless times and still holding on to his passions. The school system is trying to rip that away from him. One last thing before I retire and immediately remember another state of the union address I could've added here (but you are tired of reading I bet, and for that I'm sorry, but this is so touching to me :P). Teachers are just dolls attached to strings that are being controlled by a puppet master. At least, most of them are in my opinion. Their work is pretty simple for what getting a whole Master's Degree is worth; learn the material, study the material, deliver the material to kids in a very closed-end way, give kids a syllabus to follow exactly while deducting specific points for "unnecessary" things, and giving a kid a grade while telling him either "study and do better next time" or "good job; now be ready for the next test." I love some of my teachers because they try so hard to find new and innovative ways of teaching kids that isn't by the book, but the harsh reality is that while life doesn't follow a syllabus, the education system does. Why? Image. Popularity. A false sense of success. A conflictual definition of the word, entirely (also pretty paradoxical, considering many people who may get good grades and a good degree may not even find a great job). There are countless obstacles these willing teachers face, and it hurts them such that they can't even teach the way that may reveal to a student why the material is actually viable for use in the real world. If you have actually read all of this, whether you're Amy or a viewer, thank you. It's annoying to type this, and I'm sure it's annoying when I don't shut up xD. To Amy, wow. Just... wow. You might possibly be the single greatest KZreadr and person I have ever come across ever since I first opened KZread. You said everything the way I thought nobody else did, and you're an inspiration to so many more of us youngsters. We've still got room to grow, I know, but you have shown me that a lot of our problems in school aren't exactly our fault. Tremendous work, Amy. Those 42 minutes were the best 42 minutes (meaning of life, let me make a film theory on this video) I've spent in a LONG time, the only better time being getting my chemo lmao because I needed that. Anyhow, I appreciate your willingness to make the content you do for us, and that comes from the bottom of my heart. I'm sure everyone else here agrees with me. You could very well be the pioneer of a better future for incoming generations of new and unique children. Keep on being awesome, Amy. I can't wait for your next upload!

These are things I’ve believed for a while but was fearful of finally creating such a video because it’s different but what people need to hear. And also because study videos unlike mine get more views so it can get disheartening to not bring as much awareness to the truth as I hope this video would. Yes!! It’s about “how” you get the results that will benefit you most in the end, not the results themselves.

Now that I look into my brother's school work and syllabus, it's just so sad that everything has become so subjective and even practical subjects like math, physics, etc are taught in such a way that they are asked to study a number problems word by word as thats all in the curriculum. I've myself experienced this and it just gets so hard to develop problem solving skills that is required in competitive exams. Pulse the societal pressure just adds up to it because from straight A's we end up to bearly passing. And of course our phones are getting more and more addictive as it becomes an easy escape from all the stress. We are so in need for a change in all these stereotypical issues Ps:really needed such a topic and would really appreciate more for the future videos. God bless you!

I also have unfortunately fallen into the pothole of piling this huge amount of stress and frustration and work just to barely get A’s. I’ll admit it-grades have become my idol and I put so much pressure on myself to maintain good grades that I get burned out easily and have so much anxiety and sometimes panic attacks … this video was sooooooo helpful for me though, and made me have hope that I can get out of this season of life soon

This is so true, Amy. It is also when you are in an elite school, like mine, you're not even cared by teachers as well as fellow students cause you are not taking good grades as toppers. They sorta *indirectly* ostracize you. One of big reasons why I absolutely hate to go to school.

This has got to be the realest video I have seen about school and academic success. I came to the conclusion that in today’s education system it's just all about memorizing the information for an exam rather than learning it. They do so because they know that half the things we are being taught isn't actually essential when going into the world of work. In most cases some of the things we learn in school we don't use/need at all. Keep Up the good work wAmy🎉💙

I’m really proud of how far I have came with my mindset and your videos really have helped. I especially can relate to your enviro AP experience because I’m about to take AP classes next year and everyone is saying not to take AP Spanish because that would be our fourth year, we just got a new teacher, and people have barely passed it. Many say this will overall not serve any benefit to me, which is possibly true and I maybe need to take a different class (we don’t have many options for classes since we are a small school.) With so many unknowns with which teachers and what classes I can take in the next years it makes it hard to prepare and even if all the stats are saying that I will fail this AP class - those stats are from other people, it is only a reflection of others, not me. I have gained the mindset that everyone has the possibly to be “smart” and everyone is “smart.” Even some of my wildest goals can always be achieved, even though I may not have the resources others do, it is something I have to work on achieving like everyone else. Your videos are always full of the you can, I can, and anyone can do anything mindset which I strive to teach others ❤️

In my opinion, grades are not useless or useful either, they fall between the two but I think it is more closer to the useless boundary. To get a good grade, most people study only what's mentioned in the syllabus. This is a ''smart way'' of getting good grades, as most people think. But in reality, we are making ourselves less rich in knowledge, and most of us come to realize the truth of school and grades only after we graduate. So my main point here is, that good grades don't define success, they don't determine your chances of getting your dream job These are my thoughts. Anyways, Amy, thank you for your honest thoughts. This is probably one of the most important videos I have ever watched!

I'm in 10th grade, I have the luck to have not only good teachers, but most of them are absolutely wonderful I'm at the top 5 of my class, and 9 out of the 14 people here are meritorious. but I've realised that the biggest problem holding the other 5 is that they think they aren't good or smart enough, that they simply don't care, and the worst problem is they don't ask questions, don't put effort in the class, and out of the teachers that aren't that goid, none of them seems to care Your videos have really helped me become better, I've gotten better at not procrastinating that much, and view everything with a different perspective We (my class) are trying to push the other 5 people to be better, we have a class average of almost 94, and are expecting to raise it to 95, class is sometimes very consuming, because of proyects and homework, I literally have a homework so big the previous friday that I've had to basically pause my life for almost 2 weeks, but I'm still pushing through and studying what I like outside of school I mean... SO TRUE WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT MATHS. I currently take the IB diploma and take maths AA HL, (I also take physics HL) and I’ve got to say, I have nice math teachers, but the only reason I got to where I was today, was because I didn’t let the maths teachers in my past school get the better of me (they were condescending asf) and decided to work myself (I also loved maths so it was easier to revise it) and got an A* but I swear I never liked maths up until like 1-2 years ago because of the teachers. And the physics teachers I’ve had a generally some of the best teachers I’ve seen

I study in the first course of my college. This college is tied to an oil and gas company, and it teaches us to be workaholics and white-collar workers (I'm an IT major and they have pretty old-fashioned view on what IT sphere represents). I'm used to just doing my thing and not following the instructions, but we have a whole course called Comprehending Instructions and Reproducing Information (ELF program). It's hard for me.

Hi, it was a very fun and great video i learned a lot from it but i wanted a little help, the problem with me is a little strange tbh actually i like social media a bit but yt is the only platform i am on so i usually have a less screentime like 1-2 hours per day at max but the problem is i like reading like a lot if i get a 500 page novel i can finish it in 2 days i will just keep reading and do literally nothing else it's always like just one more page then i will go studying but that 1 page turns to 100 pages and i have no idea wht to do. Can u pls help me and give some advice that would be great and once again amazing video.

Really though, I want to share my experience and in what way i found this amazing vedio significant at this time. So I have friends who actually care and cram bout these real topics in my school. Its not that we dont study and do this the whole time though ( we all mostly have above average and near topper grades in group ) but we do realise these stuff are important. My school is actually really gud. It has amazing systems to make students realise life values and how much u have to struggle in life to get what makes u satisfied. It thought me not to take anything for granted. Teachers also have a credit in this actually...my teachers always connected real life to the subject and gave us life lessons here and there which everyone appreciated. For me, I just cant shut up about a question if it makes sense and is in my mind for too long. I just usually approach a teacher and ask them. For such kind of broad topics, I found my chem teach suitable. I find it sorry and funny for him how i would casually walk towards him and strike a convo proceeding to drop the deep question like a bomb on him😂. He'd make a face like ' how the hell u thought of that 'kinda look and give the most legitimate and insightful answer ever. Once, I was suddenly thinking like a primitive ape. Like the one which would have been there when fire wasnt even explored. So, i went to him and asked a philosophical question and everything went smoothly but at the end i ended up saying smt i reallly regreted saying as it was very stupid and dumbb. And i stopped asking him questions out of guilt. This further became a wall constricting our teacher student relationship. But later, i overcame the guilt tho, but until then, semister and school was over. ( not so sad ending ) If youve read all the way till here, really appreciate your efforts ! 🙏 apologies to keep it this long😅. Lastly, thank you so so much Amy. U let me have a new perspective and kinda remind me that there still are some teachers and some people who have such opinions about this holistic type of insights on education. I honestly appreciate your work and dedication towards this by bottom of my heart.❤. Thank you. 😊

Algebra 1 Geometry Algebra 2 were a big reason why my gpa was a 2.087 in high school. My brother had a better math teacher than me in high school called Jacob Farmer.

I started to show these types of videos to my grandma, so I would not feel pressured by her expectations or standards on getting good grades. I swear one F- or a D will make her think "Well your applying for college" but no I want to apply to college to live on my own not under her rules and live out my dreams.

My struggle are exam based courses. I excel on assignments/writing based courses.

I think that the time I spent studying in America vs the Middle East was very different 🤔🤔🤔

It is a wonderful and insightful video and says many true things. Don't think it's contradictory for people to assert that you are wise despite being childish, by the way. It's totally possible to be both and they are not mutually exclusive at all. My only gripe with this video is that it seems to assume the school system is broken, when that's not true. It works exactly as it should.
