Why You Don't Need A Five Year Plan

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

C'mon over to www.marieforleo.com/blog/long... where the main discussion happens after the episode!
Business goals are good to have, but do you really need to know the end vision before you get started? In this video, you'll learn why it's not always necessary to have a long-term vision when you're just getting started with your business.
I'm not exaggerating when I say I started from less than zero. Everything I have now is because I worked constantly for years to build it from scratch. For a long time, I worked 7 days a week and multiple jobs at a time just to make ends meet.
I didn't have a clear long-term vision for my business goals when I started out. I was confused and multipassionate about so many different things -- dance, marketing, fitness, writing. It took years of working hard at these many passions before I was able to find convergence and synthesize everything together into a business.
I had no ability back then to see a long-term vision for my business goals. I could only see a few steps in front of me and that kept me moving forward. While I do believe in having a clear vision of where you're going, it's just not always possible.

I translate "begin with the end in mind" as "know your true intention," because your intention will dictate the result of any action, (not the plan, but the underline intent). To me this Steven Covey quote does not mean "know exactly where you want to be in 5 years." Hope that little shift helps!

A plan is great but just getting started is way more important. In my business, I spent much time just perfecting my game by thousands of tiny tweaks. Some times a strict plan can work against you because running a business takes awareness of what works and what doesn't and doing what works even if it's off plan.

I have been watching Marie TV from the first episode, where you started out with your webcam. I totally believe that the right way will unfold as soon as you take action. If you show that you really want it, work hard and do everything you can, the next steps will unfold. You grow through the process, not by planning the process. Follow your heart and trust that the right opportunities will show up at the right time.

Great video Marie! :) I have a 3 year goal broken down into 1 year plans then broken down into monthly plans then broken down into weekly plans, then broken down into daily plans. I want to open my own gym and I am create a fan base and clientel now. Basically getting exposer. During the end of this year I will plan for next year and so on and so forth. My adivce for those who don't have the clear vision is to not kill there selves over it but try and do there part. Learn and experiance things you might be interested in. Seek and you will find. :) I hope that helped you :)

For someone like me who has trouble focusing and staying on track, my vision became clearer when I recognized that I wanted that feeling and that exhilaration of "I love my job!" I wanted to feel that passion to stay focused. You can't see the road ahead of you, but you just know you're reaching for that destination. Just know what you want!

Very good episode Marie...truth be told, this is my first time watching U, but I like your approach...the strategic part of business planning, in the beginning phases, you can plan all you want, however, as you start to work your plan new information becomes available and many times you have to adjust your plan in a new direction...if you want to be successful. Remember the old phrase about you cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel... we all know as you go down the tunnel, you can see farther, and what we see may be very different than what we planned to see. This is the way in many new businesses and especially now, when things change so quickly. Keep up the great videos!

marieforleo I absolutely love how your weekly MarieTV episodes inspire me to think with gratitude! This one is no exception. An entrepreneur for over 40 years now, I've operated on the adage, "Fail to plan, plan to fail." One of the lessons I learned early is that while it's important to plan, accept that plans are subject to change and it's up to me to monitor and revise them. Monitoring plans can be a challenge but with today's affordable technologies to assist us (Google Calendar + smart phones, etc.) there is just no excuse. I'm grateful to have a mind open to learning and change. That's just one of the reasons I enrolled in your 2014 B-School. :-)

That's awesome marie. It's funny... its only yesterday I was practicing answering this question in front of a mirror, in case it pops up on an interview in the near future. Awesome! I used to try the whole strategic planning thing. Gave up on it. Because anything is possible and our potential is unlimited, I don't believe we are able to even conceive of how big we can be. By growing where you're planted and pursuing your own maximum potential in each and everything you do, a person can achieve MUCH MUCH MORE than they could have imagined. Did Gates, or Jobs or ANY of the great icons of business EVER think they'd have accomplished what they did? I doubt it. You are awesome. Love your videos and your perspectives. Keep up the great work!

Raising children, family, career, marriage all those COMMITMENTS drove decisions and success for 2-5-10 plans with revisions, of course, along the way. I did not have much vision for the empty nester life and poof - Divorce. Total freedom, like in my 20's is here and I welcome it. It's familiar, blanched with flashbacks of the 1980's. Deep Spiritual journeys, exploring creativity, business ideas, and DREAMING. The latter can spin and churn as months, even years go by. Making a DECISION and taking ACTION has been critical to sorting through, Marie, you are right, I can't see 5 years right now, but I am moving towards something. Having faith in something big. It's work. The dreamer wanted it to land in my lap, fall from the heavens, receive a divine blessing. It did not help me sort or navigate CHOICES. Life is the divine blessing and it's full of Choices. And, I can always change my mind.

It is just impossible to do a 5 year plan sometimes. I tried so hard and I was MISERABLE. Now my mantra is "Go with what you're passionate about RIGHT NOW. Make something. Write down the ideas you want to do on a later date and prepare to launch them on a later date." For example, I one day I want to do an illustrated story book for girls. I"m not nearly as motivated to do that right now as I am to do travel videos (which I have all the resources to do now and to do well). I'm not the drawer I want to be yet, as I've taken a break from drawing for ten years, so instead of pushing myself to do this project RIGHT now I'm taking drawing classes until the dots all connect.

David Platt Agreed. I keep a notebook with all my ideas. That way they are captured in case I forget or want to get to them later. Some I work on, some I don't. Like it as we may, sometimes we just have to let things unfold naturally!

5 year or even 10 year plan is a nice helper. It helps me. Before I made it I spend a lot of time doing wrong things and being at procrastination. It helps to concentrate and focus and plan time which is very important. However it's often I sit back and change it as my life goes and something I tried and tested become uninteresting or useless for me. Having a plan like walking with a map but without compass - you see the final aim but you dont know which road to choose, so you just walk and your heart works as a compass.

Marie love the show. It has been hard seeing that far in the future especially when I love so many things. So I can relate. I think being able to take small bits like 6 month plans which I like to call "6 month blue print". I figure maybe if I focus on only one or two things and create a simple blue print to get there. Then I can truth find out is it is the right direction are not. The truth is we must all go through the process and allow it to make us. So I say fall in love with the process because it can be gentle or rough but one thing is true it will happen even if you don't plan for it. Thanks for the insight you rock.

I don't know about "long term" vision. I have a good idea of where I want to be a year from now and a strategy of how to get there. I have few places I would like to be 5-10 years from now, but not sure which one I'll end up on. I think the important thing though is that my short term strategy is in line with my long term vision(s) and will help me get there.

I want to believe that but I ain't so sure. maybe it depends. For me is much more about emotion associated to the goal, usally within the path and not in the goal itself. I can tell you exacly how I want to feel in 30yrs from now even if i don't have a clue of what am I going to do in the next 5 yrs. Well I have a plan, maybe because of that too. Good advice!! If you look for your greatest passion (out of all your passions) that you have the most ability to act on at any particular moment & continue to act on it, viewing everything as constructive/positive in some way, things should fall into place. I like the five year plan though. It's so much easier to think big when you're envisioning a 5 year plan without expectation that it has to be exactly as envisioned. 6 months is another story entirely. That seems to exceed the threshold of believability. p.s. It's OK to say ass...why beep? at 3:41 you say bad ass with no beeps lol Maybe it was just for effect... ~Much love
