One trick I have learned is - DO first, TELL later. I get more excited by an idea than the actions it will take to implement. A "NEW" idea is very intoxicating. So I have learned, even for myself, to take actions first and make it happen, then tell. Now people look at me different because they know when they ask what I am up to, I'm not telling them about an idea, I'm telling them about a product that is tangible - a new book/workshop/etc or I just talk about how excited I am on the outcome of my current product/service (I don't talk about ideas anymore!). Telling them about what I have that's available makes a great opportunity to market my available product/services as well.

The interesting thing is most people are multi passionate. It's rare to find one person who only has one interest. In reality, we're all multi passionate and that's an incredible thing.

I've dealt with this before and I get over it by simply owning up to it. I started my youtube channel talking about natural hair care, beauty and fashion. However, over time I evolved and I started getting interested in other things. I no longer want to work in fashion and my interest in beauty is not nearly as prominent. Now I talk about my faith and I'm building an entire community around it. I talked to my followers about the shift so no one could make me feel bad for it. I made it clear that I like multiple things and I think they respect that. It's okay to change paths, almost every one does it. Like you said it's about owning it and not announcing every new venture.

My 20s has literally been me trying out different things from rapping to modelling to acting to life coaching and as I grew older I felt more and more ashamed of changing my mind and moving onto different things, even if the last thing was 'incomplete'. I've been obsessed with finding ONE Thing and it's slowly been crushing my confidence. Now I'm beginning to own my various interests! Life's too short!

I got my Bachelor degree 7 months ago and I've been trying to fit myself into a traditional career box but I've come to realize that I am a multi-passionate entrepreneur (thanks for giving it a name haha). I decided that it doesn't have to make sense to others. I'm amazed to come across this video and your channel only days after I've finally embraced the joy of a full plate that's satisfying versus a sensible plate that is lacking.

This video perfectly outlines everything my friends and family don't understand about me. I am a filmmaker, a screenwriter, a photographer, a theme park historian, a psychology aficionado, a technology tester, etc. I have many hobbies but only one that I want to pursue as a business. I always tell my parents that many individuals like myself in the world, even famous people have many interests, skills and hobbies. Da Vinci was the biggest example that I'm glad you mentioned. Without his genius mind, we wouldn't have many inventions that we take for granted today.

You are completely right! I had a KZread channel for a while talking about beauty, fashion, etc. and found that my heart wasn't really in it. I truly believe that if you are going to do something, you have to do it with complete passion and dedication, and neither of those were there for me. Now, I have started a motivational channel and feel great. And what honestly helped me get through is not caring. Just live your life and do what you are passionate about. Thanks for sharing Marie, super beneficial!

Thank you for this great advice, Marie! I’m a writer and filmmaker who often feels ashamed that I don’t stick to “one lane.” There’s a lot of pressure among writers to choose one genre, but that’s just not me. In addition to you, I admire multifaceted people like Quincy Jones and Debbie Allen who have succeeded in multiple disciplines.

I think that being multi passionate is a strength, because it has given me the opportunity to meet people with very different personalities and learn from them. I think this could be helpful to be able to understand different types of customers. I always try to look at the bright side of things. Still, it's difficult to explain to family & friends, because they don't see a clear path. I trust I'll get there though, specially with these amazing videos that push me forward! Thank you to all in MarieTV!

This resonates with me so much! I'm an artist but I'm also an activist and a natural health enthusiast I've always felt like I've had to justify the way that all of these things are connected even though I've told myself over and over again not to care how it looks or sounds to other people as long as I can provide for myself doing what I'm loving. But having someone else say it out loud like this was so reaffirming. Thank you, Marie!

I could TOTALLY relate to this Marie. I love art, cooking, coaching and makeup and even though I did start my business as a freelance makeup artist, coached busy women how to glam themselves up fast, and even wrote and launched my first book Boss Glam: The Ultimate Guide to Corporate Glam and Empowerment, my heart was just not in it anymore. I did a lot of healing which led to me rediscovering Art and cooking and now I’m doing your Start The Right Business program and even joined BSchool to figure out what kind of dream business I want to start. Your strategy in trying to on your future business made me realize that as much as I would LOVE to have a food business, chopping and cooking all day would not be physically feasible for me. I’m almost 50 and my back ain’t like it used to be. Which leaves me with life coaching and Art, which can be location free and unlimited earning potential, which are businesses I could sure be happy to try on in the next 5 - 10 years. Thank you for helping me realize this!

Great question. Not giving yourself permission to explore is sooo true. The urge to be constantly justifying ourselves to everybody around us is actually kind of rediculous, nobody asks someone in a job why the hell they have such a boring job do they or why they don't have the guts to set up in business. I too explore different markets and businesses but I always learn something that I can take with me, whether it be skills, experience, contacts or confidence. My Dad was seen to be flaky when I was growing up and he sold his business for a lot of money 10 years ago and is living very nicely off it 10 years later. Love Leonardo too!

As a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I switch gears like every few years! 😂 But at the end of the day I'm always monetizing the same thing, and the other things remain hobbies that I throw into my branding for more "relatability"/to capture a new audience. Totally agree with these perspectives/tips.

I am so happy that I came across this channel. I have enjoyed your workout videos for many years (they have really kept me going during the quarantine) and even in those you give off a very positive energy which is infectious. (pun-intended!). My multipassionate sensibility has made me come across as flaky, but more so to myself than anyone else. I am learning to focus for more than a few months before moving on to something else. I think my biggest problem has been impatience, but I digress. The multipassionate person who I have always looked up to is Madonna. I don't think she gets enough credit for all the paths she has taken, and many times the public doesn't want to allow her to be anything but the 'boy toy' from the early 80s. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Take care.

I took a 10-day writing workshop recently in which we learned not only how to craft loglines for fiction we were writing but how to write loglines for our own lives. It was very uplifting for me to figure out how to explain what seems like a long, meandering career trail in a positive way and to "live my truth" without feeling embarrassed by it. I'll add these two thoughts: 1) I think it's hard for people to play in private if they want to monetize something even a little bit (like for fun money) because there's so much pressure to get a website, Tweet about it, etc. Maria, if you're reading this, maybe you can do a show on how to make side money without putting it front and center in your self-promotion. 2) It seems like a lot of women of a certain age, in particular, have that sort of dilettante feeling because they've dabbled in this and that in order to raise a family or put their careers second to a spouse's. I know that's why my pre-divorce resume looks disjointed if I don't structure it properly. From a practical perspective, having a functional resume where you can group jobs under similar umbrellas really helps.

Might I suggest that being multi passionate is natural state.... Like many of you I've been interested in many things all my life. I'm not successful in perhaps an entrepreneurial sense. I work with children with profound physical and cognitive disabilities, I'm not well paid, but I am hugely rewarded in my work. My latest passion? I'm learning Spanish 💃🏼. Thanks Marie for your inspirational teaching💋

Thanks for tackling this very specific situation that we are more and more to experience and putting a name on it ! One thing that works for me is working on my storytelling by connecting the dots between my various experiences and passions and bringing them back to one core desire.

I always go back to watching this video whenever I feel that I am too diverse with what I do. From being an architect to selling apartments, running a KZread channel about Travel and being a Thespian. It all boils down to, I don't want to monetize everything and that's crazy. I just need to find the balance. Thanks Marie Forleo for always inspiring me!

I absolutely an a multipassionate entrepreneur! I work in an awesome company with some of the best people and often find myself wanting to spread my wings into various different hobby businesses until I refined my purpose and acknowledged that my work is my vehicle. I am able to focus on doing what I do and playing at 100%! Knowing that this is helping me work toward my end purpose!!! Focus on your purpose and allow your hobbies to be a source of relaxation. 😁🙌🙏

Omgee I love you Marie - I needed to hear this! I was reminded how I need to say 'NO' more - one of the reasons I've started so many businesses is because people have asked me to do certain things for pay and I couldn't say no at the time.

Thank you for this video Marie! I feel like everyone can be multi passionate. I think we've only been taught that we have to choose one thing and stick with it for life. I never believed this, my passions revolve around the things I love to do in my everyday life. My hobby is crafting, I love health and taking care of myself through nutrition and fitness ( I teach others this), I love hair extensions and being about to switch up my appearance whenever I see fit ( I sell these), I love working online since it gives me the time to do all the things I care about. I think we can be whatever we want to be as long as we give zero ducks lol. The people who love you will stay and the ones who don't, they weren't meant for us anyway. :) BTW I love your channel! You teach in your own personal fun way and I just love that! Others similar to you can be very boring and closed minded at times.
