I love how you prioritize safety and press education and proper technique, but all the same find a way to make smithing fun. Alec, mate, you're the best.
Alec, when you have to talk loudly for long periods bellow from the belly not the throat. takes some getting used too, but you can get louder and save your voice for the next day. great videos man. Keep up the good work.
Honestly, the 4 man standing in a circle hitting a block of metal in a row seems like a really fun free time activity

that happened to me! we were on a job tearing out hardwoods and we had a few temps that had no tools, so i gave them a few of my extra prybars i had on hand. so then i was left with two claw hammers with which i used both heads together, using a hammer as a prybar. long story short i had to have surgery to have the chunk removed.

I'm a singing teacher among other things- can confirm: ginger honey and lemon tea will help when your voice is sore - (altho' the most important thing is to breathe with the diaphragm and make that big muscle do almost all the work, instead of straining your vocal chords in the first place)
I have a piece of a sledgehammer break off and shoot through my Achilles' tendon about 6 months ago. Piece of shrapnel is still in there. That's what can happen by striking a hammer with a hammer. I have a video on my channel about the aftermath.

When old vids like this pop up at recommended videos.. See how long you have come Alec. damn good job . Greetings from sweden.
This is like Bear Grylls for blacksmithing. (Read in his voice for greatest effect) "We're gonna make some hammers, so listen carefully. You're gonna need to hit the steel hard and fast, cause if you don't, we'll end up with a cold piece of metal, and that's REALLY gonna stink." "That's a hardened steel anvil. It's full of sharp corners, hard surfaces, and dangerous metal. One hit from a hardened hammer and I could be out for the rest of my journey. You do NOT want to mess with a creature like that." "Now that there's a piece of steel embedded in my leg, there's only one thing I can do. I'm going to have to pee on it to sterilize the wound, then carve it out with my recently forged damascus steel fishing knife from last episode. This is not gonna be pretty."

I just love watching this channel take off. You out so much effort into these videos. Glad to see it finally pay off.
Coming back to these video's is like stepping back in time through a video journal in Alec's life, and for one the big step up to a larger workshop from the one featured in this video is quite impressive, so great work on that mate. And the amount of tools which he has collected over time to make all of his projects just that little bit easier is also a great achievement, I always enjoy watching blacksmiths working, it is a fine example of craftsmanship and I personally do wish I could meet Alec Steele in person and just have a beer with him because he seems like the kind of person you could really get along with, but alas being half a world apart and broke doesn't make that any easier. Overall good job Alec and well done on moving up in the world buddy.
Awesome! I wish you weren't all the way across an ocean so I could take that class (and many others)!
Years ago my friend and I were puttering around the shop when he called me over to the anvil. He had a 3/8" ball bearing sitting on the flat and as soon as I arrived he immediately took a 2 lb. hammer and raised it to hit the bearing. As the hammer was rising for his strike I shouted "Are you nuts?" and covered up as best I could against the shards that would soon come flying out in every direction. The hammer hit the ball with a dull thud--he had hit a 00 buck shot lead pellet. We got a good laugh out of that one.
So cool to help others create tools that they can use to pursue their passion. Keep up the amazing videos.
Hi Alec, I have really appreciated your crafting and kind teaching style ! Great work ! When your voice goes horse from yelling or speaking loudly: lemon and honey in hot water or hot tea can help that a lot.
When will you be selling more striking anvils?
+Alec Steele I really love the way you edited together the clips of the team hammering. It was very cool! Keep up the amazing work, and thank you for publishing new content on a daily basis. I know it is a lot of work, and I am sure you spend just as much time editing as you do at the forge. We appreciate your hard work!
I'm old now, but when I went to High School we had a series of "Shop" classes. Woods I and II, Metals I and II, Drafting, Auto Mechanics and a few others. There might have been a general "Home Repairs/Maintenance" class in there too. #1 rule was to take care of the tools. TOOL MAINTENANCE! It is a lot easier to grind the mushroom off the top of the cold chisel than it is to have the stray splinter removed from the skin or eye. Oddly enough a sharp saw or cutting tool is safer than a dull one. Keep up the good work. I'll never be able to smith anything, but It is always fun to watch.
Hi, Alec! Depending on what caused the loss of your voice there may be help. If it's because you're teaching a class and are talking more and louder than usual a voice training can be very helpful. Many stage performers use this to be able to have a gig everey evening and still keep their voice. "Normal" speakers like you and me tend to just fuck up their vocal chords... Cheers, and keep on rocking ;-)
really feel for you with the voice on the way out.. good safety info.. a great vid as per usual 😁🤘👍
Hey Alec, I just went back and rewatched a bunch of your videos from when you started on KZread. It is awesome to see how far you have come! Keep up the good work.

Love your videos, love blacksmithing, keep passing on the knowledge and making awesome stuff!
Hey Alec, I love your videos! During my time at University, I studied vocal music, and as a part of that I couldn't take a day off for a tired voice. A wise graduate student shared with me this recipe for "Magic Throat Fix Tea." It's easy to make, give it a try next time the old talk box is rusty. Ingredients: 2c H2O 1 lemon 2 black tea bags 1/4c honey a few slices of fresh or candied ginger Get your water hot by whatever method is best for you. Cut the lemon in half and squeeze all the juice into the water, then toss the rest in there too for good measure. While you're at it, add the ginger too. Let that sit together for a few min, then toss in the two bags of tea and steep until it's tea. Remove all non-liquid stuff from the tea, then add a good amount of honey, stir and sip until you can talk/sing/etc. again. I hope this helps! Keep up the awesome video making!

All the best with your future classes, and hopefully your students will take their lessons and continue to prosper. These vids are priceless and very inspiring. I doubt I will be able to venture to your neighborhood any time soon, but one must start somewhere. I get a little closer everyday it seems. On a side note, no doubt you have now started looking at ways to assist your throat. I can personally recommend any tea with slippery elm and licorice in it (like Yogi: Throat Comfort), with fresh lemon juice, slices of ginger, and local honey. Added star anise and especially clove doesn't hurt, if you fancy, during the heating of the tea. It's often referred to as "Singer's Tonic" or similar, but I used a version of it when doing junior acting. It's best used as a daily ritual to help you maintain your throat health. Daily vids and speaking over loud environs is extra level punishing. That said, you did famously. Cheers!
Great video just love watching every day .
Alex, When you have the vocal issues, use Luden's wild cherry cough drops or any other drop that's made from natural ingredients. If you don't have them where you are, let me know. I'll send you a root, used by Native Americans, for sore, scratchy, nasty throat issues.

Praying your voice gets better. Really good, great informative video!!!
Still one of my favourite videos. I enjoy watching leaders lead, teachers teach, and mentors get their mentor on.
When I was a kid around 12 my parents used pallets to burn in our wood heater. My dad used to make me take all the nails out of the wood. I was using 2 claw hammers taking one claw under the nail and hitting it with the other hammer. The hammer head fractured and a small piece of the head went right in my center chest hitting my breast plate bone. My dad tried getting it out with tweezers so my mom wouldn't find out but no luck. So off to the doctors we went. They got the piece out and told my dad a couple millimeters over and it would have gone past my ribs and in my chest cavity. SO EVERYONE PLEASE LISTEN TO ALEC NEVER HIT HARDENED STEEL TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!! Great video Alec brought back a funny memory for me today. The funniest part of the whole incident was he tried using a magnet to get the piece out so there I was a scared 12 year old kid with a magnet stuck to my chest and my dads worried about my mom kicking his butt LOL.
Thanks for explaining a bit about hitting these metals together, I thought it must be to do with hardening, and was curious if your tools were hardened. I have no experience with metalwork I'm a plasterer. I would love to see videos explaining more about the different metals and hardning. Great work keep it up wish I had found you earlier but KZread algorithms are weird!
love this whole youtube channel, this guy would be awesome to just hang out with for a day i would think. keep up the great work!

Just discovered your channel yesterday - am binge watching whilst working today! Loving the content and your creativity! I know nothing of blacksmithing.....yet.

That looks like such a good time! Glad nobody got hurt
Alec steele, as a suggestion in order to save your voice, ( I was a voice performance major in college, I'm a singer). This not only applies to singing but this also applies to talking as well. You might want to check out some you tube videos and learn how to use your diaphragm this not only saves your voice but it will help you alot in other areas when you talk. Or as another suggestion I've seen glass blowers use a head mike when giving demos to the audience or students. I know it sounds goofy but what I've learned in voice lessons over the years has saved my voice from blowing out my vocal chords even when I'm yelling or needing to talk loudly. If you take care of your voice it will take care of you. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work Alec.
