Bring back the kylix. If we're not allowed naked people on our pens by turning them upside down, we should at least be allowed them in our cups.

I think he took it off of a fourth grade. We teachers had fun gaping and laughing.

Glass is just too cheap and too practical. Though I do sometimes drink my Scots whisky out of ceramic sake cups. When I'm feeling especially pretentious.

In that case I hope you noticed that they spelt whiskey with the e on the wee bottles as they should have if its from outside scotland (apart from a couple of exceptions such as makers makrk and yamazaki.)

Why would he be disappointed? He's probably just put it somewhere safe.

The info about these cups was new to me, but I did know about the glass bottomed English beer tankards in the 18th century. The army recruitment gangs of the time would offer to buy a man a beer and drop a shilling coin in the tankard & once the beer was drunk, claimed the man had 'accepted the King's shilling' or in other words 'you're in the army now mate!', but with a glass bottom tankard the prospective victim could look & see the coin & avoid the trap.

They covered that one on QI before, turns out it's more of a myth than anything, as it was classed as entrapment and therefore not legally binding to recruit people, even if those times were less lawful, they still had some standards!! :P

@@twocvbloke I should imagine they got away with it quite often as the people the targeted would almost certainly have been illiterate & would not have known it was illegal. Also the army of that era would almost always been in need of more 'cannon fodder' so I expect the military authorities would very likely have turned a blind eye to such practices.

Feels like it'd be a bit more effective to just have the entire cup made from glass

Stopped drinking a long time ago. I rarely drank alcohol before that anyway but I did find myself in Edinburgh. One of my favourite places I ever went to was The Scotch Whisky Experience. It really is one the most extraordinary places to visit. On the cups thing, I do agree with Sandy, I’d love to see those types of fun paintings the Ancient Greeks designed on or inside novelty mugs.

A friend had a set of four mugs that looked like ears of corn on the outside. Inside, *one* of them had a worm on the bottom (a cute cartoon worm). You couldn't tell which one until you drank enough to see it!

The other reason Brits would want a glass bottom in their cup/mug/drinking vessel of choice, is so they can see the shilling the recruiting sergeant dropped in it before it ends up in their mouth so they don't wind up in the army.

How drunk do you have to be to drink a coin without knowing it? Not every glass is a fraternity pledge.

Betcha a bar or pub could make that their whole thing. "Drink like the Greeks, get a surprise every time." I don't doubt that somehow, I'd always wind up getting the one non-sexual one in the batch, every single time. "Oh, gee, it's the dove again. What're the odds."

When a TV show explores the topic of interesting drinking vessels - have the host mimic the appearance of the vessels instead of showing them. 🙄
