Why Won't the Mets Talk to Pete Alonso About an Extension?

Спорт

Pete Alonso arrived at spring training over the weekend and was met with plenty of questions regarding his future with the New York Mets.
If Alonso is truly all ears on a potential contract extension, why aren't the Mets pursuing a deal?
Host Ryan Finkelstein discusses where things stand with Pete and the Mets and why an extension is unlikely.

Hi Ryan, there are a couple of factors to that into account first the contracts that the Mets are on the hook for (Scherzer and Verlander}. The other factor is building around Citi Field much attention and money has gone into this project once this is done it will provide even more revenue to Steve Cohen whose Mets are operating at a loss these things must get resolved before they can move forward. Yamamoto would have been an exception based on being a sort-after player who would have driven ticket sales up. Many unanswered questions still need to be answered and with David Stern he will oversee them as they unravel as time moves on.

This is Sterns way of keeping the Mets relevant on the sports pages of the local papers. Pete is not a greedy person. He's a philanthropist, regularly helping charities. When you're talking a payday at Pete's level, what is a million plus/minus to get the deal done. Your comment on the possibility of losing out on both Pete Alonzo and Ron Soto is a possibility. If that happened, there would be no draw for fans to shell out hard-earned money to attend a game in person. It would be equivalent to a traveling road show of a Broadway hit. No "celebrity" to draw you in. With your reference to Vientos replacing Pete at first base, I don't see long lines at a baseball convention waiting to get Vientos autograph just yet. For the Mets organization, this is not the time to be penny wise and pound foolish.

Used to be that also worked out for his clients, but now that MLB is clearly making a concerted effort to push back on Boras Inflation (see: top 5 unsigned FAs), Pete is stuck between that and David Stearns, who is frothing at the mouth to trade him for a Top 500 prospect who might make the club as a utility infielder in 2029.

I could see if he were a sub-par player, but this may be one of the greatest players in our franchise history to don the uniform, in the high territory of say Seaver, Gooden, deGrom at their best ... Cohen (a good man, a good fan) must think - $$$ is the solution to everything ... but sadly it is not - if you turn the ❤ of a player sour, and the franchise that follows him, no amount of $$$ is going to bring him back like Ryan says, while he is open and soft and willing - now is a better time, than after he puts up MONSTER #'s in a walk contract year. A man like Cohen will find out a very grim reality that Jack Benny once did, you can't take it with you, you can't freeze yourself and come back, you cannot use AI to live forever, it is appointed unto a man to die once in this life, no one escapes that appointment, and no amount of $$$ will ever save someone long enough to put it off. Mets need Pete's production..... Lindor needs Pete hitting behind him..... truth is they actually need a DH that can add power behind him..... he's going to get 200+ on a long term deal....too many teams interested in his strength to a lineup. Is he perfect? No. Everyone would like a better batting average but the good far outweighs a sub .240 average. Cohen needs to add one more big bat. I understand waiting for that bat with these kids getting their chance..... but 2025 is supposed to be their ALL IN year..... so i expect Pete and another big bat in the 4 and 5 slots in the lineup in 2025. Could that be one of the kids?? I honestly doubt it but im willing to watch them one more season. You want to beat Atlanta?? You better keep Pete and find another bat to take some heat off of him. Philly isn't a concern...in my opinion. I don't think they're in a good position for long term success. Atlanta.... however....is always positioned for success with solid pitching and their ability to find needs from within their organization. The next year will define the Mets organization as either a winner or loser under the leadership of Stearns and Cohen. Stearns is fortunate.... he basically already got a free pass for the entire 2024 season because nobody with realistic thought could possibly see this team contending in the NL East this season. It's all about 2025...... the clock will tick away and the true reality of this organization will soon be exposed in the world of MLB.

Kyle Schwarber hit for like a .195 average in 2023. But was he productive? Helpful even? Trick question. The answer is yes. Pete had 46 homers and 118 RBIs. His BA and whiff rate might not have been where fans, or even Pete, wanted it, but you can't just ignore those stats. I'm willing to turn the other cheek at the less than favorable stats for upwards of 50 bombs and well over 100 RBIs. Last year was also an outlier for Pete. Imagine that.
