David Stearns talks Pete Alonso + Mets pitchers and catchers are on the field | The Mets Pod | SNY

Спорт

Connor Rogers and Joe DeMayo drop the latest episode The Mets Pod presented by Tri-State Cadillac, as snow falls up north, but Mets pitchers and catchers are under the sun and on the field down south in Port St. Lucie. Connor and Joe talk about the scenes from early spring training, including position players who are already working out alongside the hurlers and the backstops. The guys also react to comments from Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns about the future free agency of Pete Alonso, look at how new manager Carlos Mendoza interacts with the media, and discuss the deal that Jorge Soler signed with San Francisco. Of course, that brings about another Mets designated hitter conversation surrounding J.D. Martinez and Mark Vientos. The show then wraps up with a dive into the Mailbag for questions answered about a role for Joey Lucchesi and what Starling Marte will provide in 2024. Don’t forget that The Mets Pod will travel to spring training for a live episode right outside the main entrance at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie on Saturday February 24th at noon eastern, right before the first spring training game for the Mets! If you’re there, stop by to say hello! Be sure to subscribe to The Mets Pod at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

At this stage, why would the Mets offer Pete something like 10 yrs/300m, and have that be the floor going into the 2024 off-season? That makes no sense. If there was an extension, it should have been offered after Olson's extension. That ship sailed.

I just don’t understand how you can pay a .217 hitter at an under valued position 30 million or more. On top of that Olson and Freeman are better players while making a lot less.

Alonso is a streaky hitter. He is not clutch. He is worse than his stats. .217 is .217. He is going to want at least 30 million a year.

Why is it even a question about whether or not Pete is going to sign an extension with the Mets?

I love what Stearns has been doing with the Great pitching acquisitions, but, I don't see Stearns rationale in not doing his best in signing Alonso (aka, The Polar Bear). Alonso is 30 yo. & the guy can hit them out of the park with men on base, which is the type of player the Mets need to keep, so, I truly hope Cohen can spend some money on a high caliber, home run hitter like Alonso before he hits the free agency market. Also, I get a strong feeling that Stearns has not pulled the trigger in signing a veteran DH, because, he may be looking at using Vientos as the teams DH, or at 1st base if they don't sign Alonso. Let's Go Mets 😊...

The Mets had better dh’s playing the field than an actual dh since its adoption in the NL.. Duda, Mo Vaughn, Murphy ect

They decided to trade Pete at the deadline. Its clear to me. Why add nothing if you want to keep him. They aren't anywhere close to as good as Atlanta. Philly is a more talented team too. They're selling out the 2024 season without saying it because they don't want to pay Pete at age 30 a long term deal and they realize that they can pick up a nice package for him to a contender at the trade deadline. Stearns term as a Mets GM will be defined by who he picks up in an Alonso trade.

This is a terrible take, we are still competing for 2024 obviously, the only way I see us trading Alonso ( which I still think he’ll stay either way) if we’re 15-20 games back at the deadline (which won’t happen) and if he’s here during FA in 2025 we will lock him up for life, it’s clear he wants to be here, and if Cohen pays him a blank check no doubt he’ll stay. And I totally think Cohen will get him a blank check, if we want to be WS contenders in 25, there is no reason he shouldn’t be on this team

@@JonBaseball14_ It also won't require them to be that far back. Even 10 back at the deadline is way too much to overcome.
