Why we Clip our Guinea Fowl’s Wing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here at our homestead we raise guinea fowl but keeping them means that there are a few things that you have to do on a regular basis, one of which is clipping their wings.

I love that they fly. I never clip my guineas wings.. I let them do as they want and go into the woods. They are wild littlebeasts. They go back to coop at night but free range all day. Edit.. everything I read says not to carry guinea fowl by their legs.

I think its best to let them keep their wings just bring the babies in around winter or fall and they will never leave. They are roamers and like to cover ground sometimes they go a mile out but they always come back to their coup and they have warned us about foxes in the past & the wings are something they only use when they need I've never seen them fly otherwise.

People don’t understand that we all take care of our animals differently! This person clips wings to avoid them from flying while other don’t mind it when they fly. We are all different and do things differently so we shouldn’t judge other by how they choose to take care of their animals. I take care of animals myself and I choose not to clip their wings because it’s my choice and this person can make their own choices, it’s just for other to not judge them for their choices!

Mine do what they want and they roost in the cedar tree outside my bedroom window with the chickens. I have a pole with a bear trap on it to hold the owls still in time for me to get to the porch with the 12 gauge. The dogs do the ground work but 1 owl will just slaughter them. Hell mine think they are chickens since I usually take the chicken eggs and replace them with guinea eggs. Id say if you keep em couped up and in the city youd want to clip the wings but if they just run wild leave em alone.

I would never clip my guinea's wing. I kept my guineas in a fully enclosed pen for about 10 months, they were raised with chickens to start with and later with ducks. I lost a male at 8 months to a rooster attack, my only female at 2 years old. She was seemingly fine except laid 2 odd shaped eggs in a row. I had given them their treats, she was fine, eating away,, then 2 hours later she was found dead in her favorite spot looking towards the garden. They just turned 5 and my favorite male suddenly died, leaving me with just 1. All my poultry have open pens, except my juveniles which are raised in the old guinea pen. My guinea free ranges with my chickens and ducks, he gets to choose which coop he wants to roost in at night. He seems to listen pretty well too. He's had the occasion to fly onto the pens gates and all I need to do is tell he to get back in the pen and he'll turn around and fly back inside. He will have company of his own breed soon, I bought 3 keats about 2 weeks ago that are in the house until tomorrow when they go to the nursery. They're in with 4 bantams (Silkies?) who are bigger than they are currently. I don't really care if they're males, females or both, they'll earn their keep by protecting the rest of the flock and gobbling up bugs in the yard. We're surrounded by woods on 3 sides and so far the highest they've flown up on was the 3' high gate. And out of over 300 chickens and 40 ducks, I've clipped a wing maybe 10 times when I first started raising standard chickens and ducks.

Some people say it’s cruel because they don’t always use pain relief during the procedure and because it’s like amputation someone’s fingers off. It doesn’t hurt afterwards though. Since you’re removing a joint from the bird it’s permanent. Even though it doesn’t really have negative long term effects I wouldn’t do something permanent like that.
