I mean it’s pretty obvious when you take your love/hate out of the character, at every chance she’s been at the edge she’s willing to accept death or the outcome - Age of Ultron (willing to die) Civil war (shock collar & straight jacket) Infinity war (sigh of relief as she dusted) Endgame (as long as Thanos died I’m sure she wouldn’t of cared what happens to her) WandaVision (had she been able to bury Vision or not of released her magic in the way she did on Westview that set her on a new path as The Scarlet Witch, she very well might of unfortunately gotten to the point of suicide out of sheer loneliness and depression) And then we all saw what her experiences forged her into in MoM and then the moment the only anchor she was holding onto was shattered (the fear of her children) not 60 seconds later she easily committed suicide. Thor lost more, Peter lost more sure go ahead and believe that (subjective after all) difference is Wanda’s character isn’t shackled to the “cliche hero trope” of at the end of a film she’s a good guy and saves the day, she’s easily the most prime example of the human experiences we live through right or wrong. Love or hate the character that’s what makes Wanda Maximoff the most compelling and relatable MCU character by a large margin, also helps that I don’t think anyone but Olsen would able to capture that raw human emotion that we all feel and hide from the rest of the world. Such a beautiful and tragic analysis of the character, thank you!

Wow. This is so well written!! I am blown away!!! 😲Thank you for sharing your insights and adding more depth into Wanda's story. You spoke into her character so elegantly and you captured the beauty and tragedy of her life in such a moving way. I am touched by your writing! "Wanda’s character isn’t shackled to the “cliche hero trope” of at the end of a film she’s a good guy and saves the day, she’s easily the most prime example of the human experiences we live through right or wrong." This is gold!!! I feel the same way: Wanda doesn't fit into the typical, positive character arc, where one goes on a transformative journey and ultimately finds the truth, forming into a better version of themselves as a result. Wanda seems to have a negative character arc, where she inevitably embraces a lie and meets her tragic end. We feel for Wanda because of her humanity. She has flaws, weaknesses, and misbeliefs, and we get to see the process of her wrestling through her dark moments. Wanda falls, makes mistakes (and some of them are irreversible)... but it just makes her human. Such a well-written character and story that is compelling and relatable indeed! Thank you so much for stopping by, my friend! And for supporting my channel in this way!☺

Yess I totally agree! Vision is such a pure soul and I loved him as a hero. Just the fact that he is able to lift Thor's hammer shows that there is something special about him. Despite Vision's love for Wanda and his desire to live an ordinary life with her, he is constantly putting others above himself (i.e Infinity War). In WandaVision, as he was disintegrating outside of the hex - in his dying moments - Vision was calling for help. Not for himself, but for the citizens of Westview. So I think both Infinity War and WandaVision are where Vision's integrity and selflessness are on full-display, proving that he is truly worthy of wielding Thor's hammer.

While I don't agree with Wanda's actions, I really empathize with her pain and feel her grief. It sounds like you've had quite a journey with grief, and I am so sorry to hear that you lost your loved ones. Similar to what you shared about dealing with loss, if I had the power to bring back my dear friend, then I might be like Wanda more than I'd like to admit. I must say that I find it shocking how so many fans seem to forever condemn her while they are so quick to forgive Tony Stark for all of his mistakes which have cost a lot of issues for the Avengers. Wanda is my comfort character. I’ve dealt with grief for most of my life, and the many emotions that comes with it. I’ve put up walls, not let anyone in. I’ve thought the world is unfair and cruel, it’s been hard for me to trust people. But, there have been people sent to me in my life that have helped me to see the beauty in life and that not everyone is the same. I’ve made amazing friends who have told me it’s okay to still grieve, and it’s okay to wish they were still here. My best guy friend said something to me years ago that still sticks with me to this day. And I remember it so well because it’s similar to what vision said to wanda. “I wish you could see yourself as I see you…and I wish others could see you as I do too” He was one of the first people in my entire life who truly SAW me. Just like vision with Wanda, he helped open me up and let me be vulnerable. It was scary very scary at first. But…I’m glad I did. Because now I have even more friends who see me as he does.

Hey friend! It's so awesome to hear that you are a counselling student! I'm really excited for you and I hope you are enjoying every moment of your learning journey! There are so many things about coping mechanisms that I didn't get to cover in the video, but I guess I will share more here and hopefully it will be helpful! Coping behaviours come from a history of painful experiences, often in childhood and insecure attachment relationships. When a child experiences a prolonged period of isolation (feeling alone in their pain), that's when they start developing coping mechanisms for survival. Years later, the client is no longer in the same environment (aka dangerous/unsafe/abusive/etc.) as they were when they were young. But if the client hasn't dealt with their trauma, then they will continue living their lives as if they are still dealing with the same threat as before. Common symptoms/behaviours are anxiety, anger, perfectionism, impulsiveness/etc. The coping mechanisms they've learned will actually lead to more problems and pain in their own life and relationships with others. And clients often aren't aware that it's because of the baggage they are carrying from the past, so it's easy for them to shame themselves for their current ways of coping. They don't realize that their current way of coping is actually the very thing that helped them survive an impossible situation/event. The coping mechanism was 'adaptive' at one point in time, but it is no longer adaptive, and so the therapeutic work would focus on working through the traumatic events aka the "root issues", rather than unlearning the coping behaviours aka behavioural change. And once the emotional healing happens, the client would no longer need to hold on to their old ways of coping. So the behavioural change will occur as a result of emotional change. An example of this for the client would be knowing when it's actually safe to express their pain when they are hurt by others, instead of lashing out/being aggressive as a response. This was longer than I wanted it to be haha but hopefully this adds more depth to what coping is about! Feel free to lemme know your thoughts or other questions you might have! ☺Thank you for sharing your love for Wanda and her story!

the reason i've loved wanda as a character is because of how easy it is to see her battle with grief and trauma. unlike the other superheroes who are fighting against aliens and saving the world, wanda has an addition of fighting an internal battle, which is the built up emotions within her. so her battles never end and we see that clearly with how often she falls from grace. she's a beautifully written character who in my opinion, should be a symbol that represents the very idea of love. her love for her family is what we see when she's at her highest but it's also what we see when she's at her lowest. it's always been love. she protects, she fights, she kills, all in the name of love. every motivation she has had has been connected to love and that's what makes her character a gem. it's just knowing how powerful she is and how dangerous she can be despite her core values of love, care and empathy. she really represents many of those in our world. also, elizabeth olsen is a brilliant actress. the way she portrays this character throughout her appearances has been subtle but major. the tears, the wrinkles, the dialogue, the delivery, elizabeth olsen consistently slays this character of the scarlet witch and i would never trade her in for anyone else.

Honestly I was waiting for such a great video to appear. It maked me realize how much pain and grief Wanda have inside herself, and not actually accepted them completly, which for the record, is also a thing I took notice on her. She just lived, and continued living without resolving her trauma. When I look at some videos or commentarys about her (Wanda) saying that her character development was destroyed and that they killed her character entirely, it's somewhat unnerving. Because people think that she automatically healed herself after the events of WandaVision, thinking that she was completly fine being once again alone, and have to sacrifice her dreams and wishes for the greater good of other people or the world itself, AGAIN. Of course, I also say that the mistakes she made in MoM (causing pain, suffering and killing other people and heroes) are not correct, but what did you expected from someone who doesn't completly 'moved on' from all that suffering and pain and as an extra, became corrupted and lost her humanity completly? She always had to sacrifice her desires for the world, never actually accomplishing what she ever wanted. Not saying that she was selfish, but it doesn't mean we can't care only about ourselves sometimes, and honestly, she just wanted a loving family that loved her as much as she loved them, not wanting to destroy or control the whole world, she just wanted to be loved. I truly hope that all this hate that is coming to her character dies in the future, with a beautiful redemption arc, because sometimes people bring things about her, that doesn't even make sense and are completly on hating the character because they're simply... haters

And it's a bit disappointing sometimes when people aren't able to see or empathize with her pain. Empathizing doesn't mean we are justifying her actions. It just means we can see why she's hurt and understanding why she would go down a dark path. It's what makes Wanda human. I am also expecting a redemption arc and hopefully she will find a sense of purpose in her grief, and then finally be reunited with the people she loves! ☺

P.S. I think something people gloss over is that when she came back from being dusted, 2 of the people she had spent the past few years on the run with were gone. Steve went back in time and Natasha was dead. Sam would have been the only one around who she was potentially close to in any way, but we've never seen anything that would lead us to believe they were more than acquaintances. Clint went back to his family and was dealing with his own traumas from losing Natasha and dealing with what he did during the blip. Everyone was gone or emotionally unavailable.

this was so good, and yes no wanda stan actually believes shes dead hahah. i also think she did not know that she was hurting the people of westview, she knew they were in the hex yes but she thought she was giving them their dream lives as we saw before she started the hex. a lot of people ignore this and think that she kept the people in westview knowing it was hurting them, but its very clear by the way of her reaction when agatha showed her that she was actually hurting them and thats when she opened the hex and let them out.

Really good analysis, this is probably the first decent video I've seen that actually explains her actions well without necessarily defending the wrong things she did. I see so many people hating on her character in MoM because she "suddenly went evil", but if you really analyze it, it does actually make sense and I think that movie as a whole gets a lot of unnecessary hate. While I do still think that she was snapped out of the Darkhold's influence a bit too easily in that last scene, at least I can appreciate it more than I did at first taking into consideration what you explained. Her complexity and development through the movies is what made her my favourite character recently, I also like how you said that you've drawn your own conclusions from what you've seen, since this is what I also do and it's why I don't think MoM is trash like so many other people do. Also, this is really making me want to watch WandaVision and 2nd time hehe Dang this comment ended up being longer than I meant it to be xD

Yes, I totally feel you! Wanda's character is soo beautifully (and tragically) complex, and I love how there is constant development in her journey, even if it isn't in the direction that we are hoping for. Thank you for sharing what you've seen in Wanda's story. I love how we can both look past her actions (as wrong as they may be) and understand what is really going on for her beneath the surface. There is so much depth in Wanda, so much humanity - that makes her one of the most real and compelling characters in the MCU. WandaVision tugged on my heartstrings like no other. I miss it too and I can see myself watching it again if my heart ever feels ready for more heartbreak 🤣

Excellent video! One of the things I had trouble with when I first watched MoM was Wanda’s character arc. I worried that Wanda’s choices undid some of her character growth from Wanda vision. However, I like your point about cycles of behavior. Deep down, Wanda is a deeply empathetic person and she, as you said, always does the right thing in the end. The key is her knee jerk reaction to grief. It’s a trauma response. She either protects or avenges, but has very limited experience with actually building stable, healthy happiness. Other than in her brief time with Vision, she is living in whatever her endgame is for her most recent tragedy. In this way, I think it’s unfair to expect her to be “all better” even with the therapeutic nature of her time in Westview. Long story short, someone should have been there for her. You did an excellent job in this analysis of showing how Wanda’s character has grown, albeit in a cyclical way. Wanda’s growth doesn’t happen in a straight line, and frankly neither does anyones. I love her character because you can’t make excuses for the bad things, but you can have empathy and forgiveness for her. I can’t wait to see what’s next for our girl!

Great analysis of Wanda, I definitely agree with what you've said. I also think that Wanda isn't gone for good - there is plans for a Vision-centered spinoff of Wandavision that could introduce her, though I think it's more likely that we will see her again either when they incorporate her sons into the Young Avengers or through the expansion of mutants/X-Men. Whatever it is, I just really hope that they find a way to have Wanda actually work through all her grief and trauma and give her some sort of happy ending - she's suffered more than most other MCU characters and she deserves to find peace.

  • @therapywithrainbow

    @therapywithrainbow

    Жыл бұрын

Yes, you are so right! There was definitely another layer of trauma from having to watch Vision die 'twice'. 😭 Unfortunately I didn't get to cover that theme but it's so great you brought it up in this discussion! Meaning-making is an essential part of what we call 'integration' of traumatic events in the therapeutic process. Our main work as therapists involves helping the client access previously avoided emotions to build their capacity to regulate their feelings. But on top of that, we would also try to connect the client's emotions to specific contexts (integration), and thereby, create meaning out of the traumatic events. Without the process of meaning-making, it is unlikely that the client would be able to 'integrate' their traumatic events as part of their narrative (if you are interested, feel free to look up narrative theory). And this also explains why many trauma survivors' coping mechanism is manifested in the form of dissociation - similar to Wanda's creation of the hex - to isolate themselves from reality so that they won't have to experience their pain. So for Wanda, it would be even more difficult for her to integrate her trauma because she firmly believes that she and Vision's sacrifice was meaningless. And this is the extra layer of trauma that would be incredibly difficult to process. You're definitely right in that it was a huge deal, because this is the context of Wanda's deepest wound. I hope this makes sense haha. Thank you for sharing your love for Wanda and her story! Feel free to share more of your thoughts! And let me know if you have other questions regarding this, and I will try my best to get back to you! ☺

This was an excellent analysis of Wanda however I didn’t care for Wanda’s characterization in Multiverse of Madness. I believe that this a misstep as the Wanda we’ve been watching became the very monster Tyler Hayward and others claimed she was from the start. Hi Elizabeth, thank you so much for your kind words and sharing your thoughts and insights here! 🥰 And yeah I totally see what you mean. I don't think Wanda was a monster from the start, and perhaps her characterization in Multiverse of Madness was more on the extreme end. The Wanda we knew would feel remorse for her actions, but somehow that part of her wasn't represented well in MoM. I think there could be many different factors that contributed to this issue. One being that Wanda might have been corrupted by the darkhold (as Dr. Strange mentioned in his first interaction with Wanda). But it's hard to say how much influence the darkhold had on her when she became "mad". I am also really looking forward to seeing a redemption arc for Wanda's story! I want to see her goodness on full-display as she returns and hopefully be reunited with her loved ones! ☺️

I also think loosing her parents at such a young age had a huge affect in Wanda. She seem to want to find that paternal influence in people like Clint and Steve sort of, but it never stuck. She never had that influence as she grew up and that effected her personality I think. She never had that firm foundation, and it only shook more when her brother and vision died. I think that is what Wanda needs now, a parent figure.

Actually Vision *is* back .. The White Vision that took off at the end is still out there, and his own spin off show Vision Quest is confirmed, so it goes hand in hand with your analysis. I agree with what you said, that you don't know whether this was what writers had in mind when they wrote her story but that it makes sense. It's what happens when you write organic stories rather than forcing them into plots that don't quite work or fit. What is the next step for Wanda? I think writers did a wonderful job with Wanda so far, and Elizabeth's portrayal just makes it perfect. Many will say RDJ/Tony Stark but I genuinely believe, in many ways, Elizabeth Olsen & Wanda Maximoff is the best character in MCU.

This video is amazingly well done because it doesn’t try to paint Wanda’s character as innocent. It acknowledges the wrong that she’s done, but it sheds light into the complexity of her motives and her character. I love Wanda’s character because of her journey while acknowledging that she is not exactly a conventional hero. Great work!

You keep explaining Westview Vision as a separate entity but he was born of her magic. It's a war between what she knows is right and what she wants. Not him making her see the truth, he is her. This is an internal struggle that they showed us externally to explain it better.

6:13 Regretful or not, Ultimately Vision wasn’t killed by Wanda but by Thanos. Just like Wanna said in MoM, she blew a hole in the head of the man she loved, but it meant nothing.

They don't need to bring Vision back. He's already back, but he's taking time to figure out who he is after the fake Vision gave him his memories back. So Wanda will definitely be back, otherwise that whole ending to WandaVision was for nothing.

Amazingly insightful and sensitive analysis. I liked Wanda before but now I understand and love her. I hope future writers of Wanda-related stories have this understanding. I also appreciate that you don’t mention the brain. The brain-consciousness theory is not scientific, but only pretends to be. I am subscribed.

Great Analysis! Subbed. I really like how you elaborated the negative cycle due to her unprocessed trauma. Honestly, she's not the only character who clings to vengeance as a way of coping. Thor, Peter, Wenwu from Shangchi, Hawkeye, Stark during Civil War upon knowing Bucky killed his parents and even King T'Challa himself. The thing that I don't like about this whole thing is the invalidation that Wanda is getting. If it's another character they get a free pass and justify that they deserve to do that because that's the most important thing to that character. But if it's Wanda, that's bullshit. She's still wrong with enslaving the town but let's not forget that Peter 1 would kill Green Goblin if Peter 2 didn't stop him. I also saw a comment before about her not really sacrificing anything in IW because Vision's death was reversed by the time stone. She still saw it, she literally got thrown by Thanos when she realizes what he was doing and tried to stop him. It's still a sacrifice because she remembers everything that happened in it and tried her best to fulfill Vision's request which is explained in the video, the pain she accumulated is more than when she lost her brother because Vision was her support system and he's gone so... 🤷 That was the most annoying thing i've read. Yes, it's fiction but I know what it's like to be invalidated.

I honestly don’t believe the writers intended this no more than D&D did with the mother of dragons. However both (if done right in danys case) would have been extremely compelling and educational about these various dark places we go to within ourselves. There’s a reason though that I’m still team Targaryen regardless of what they say she did and I’m also still team Wanda no matter how they tried to completely destroy her. While I agree with your analysis and it gives me more peace on the matter like I said I know that’s not what they were doing. The part of the Darkhold being pure evil and using our desires against us is what gives me pause considering literally everyone in the film was more worried about Strange. Who ultimately makes her sacrifice moot by doing what he wants and everyone loving him for it. She has multiple cries for help and no one listens. Not even Monica who at the least understands and supports her. My ladies deserve better
