So much of the film could have been fixed just by having the villain be a Wanda from another multiverse, in a universe where she didn't experience growth from Westview. I think we'd all want that because having a Wanda vs Wanda fight scene could have been a visual masterpiece

@@skulliebythesea There is an evil variant of Wanda in the comics called Lore. But the real missed opportunity is Wanda's arch nemesis, Chthon. Chthon is literally mentioned in the movie. The Wanda who kills Xavier looks exactly like Chthon-possessed Wanda. All of the amazing lore involving Chthon and Wanda is ignored so they can have Wanda be the Hysterical Woman/Girlboss hybrid. Wanda's ability to resist Chthon angers yet also impresses him.

She didn't know what was happening, and people forget the likes of Steve told her her powers were good. The Hex was created using hundreds of spells, even though Wanda knew no spells. Agatha is baffled by this. Someone planted the spells in her. The Hex was a trap sprung by Chthon. The author of the Darkhold talks about "forging Wanda", implying he has orchestrated everything. The shark who appears in the WandaVision ad and gives the kid "Yo' Magic" is Chthon.

It's absolutely baffling to me that people claim she knew what she was doing and didn't give a damn. When Wanda found out what the people of Westview were experiencing she had a complete and utter meltdown and immediately tried to destroy the hex. If she knew and didn't care about the people then WHY would she react like that? There was no hesitation, no should i or shouldn't i, the second she knew what was happening she immediately tried to take down her perfect life to save them from a terrible fate she unintentionally pushed onto them. I had this talk with so many people that it's honestly just tiresome to the point of being painful.

I agree with your sentiment, but I definitely blame Michael Waldron the writer more than Sam Rami for her character assassination. I read a previous draft of the script that leaked online several months before the movie, and it was a lot worse than what we got(I straight up thought it was fake). I think Elizabeth's amazing acting and Sam's directing actually helped improve the character in the movie a lot more, but still writing problems are writing problems, and major writing problems that assassinate characters and disrespect their previous arcs are so fundamentally bad that the movie still suffers.

I sympathize with sad Dr. Strange who was toxic initially but tried to grow internally and come back to the woman who did treat him well earlier-even apologizing to her for not appreciating her more and treating her badly earlier. I think Dr. Strange being sad is a worthwhile thing to discuss. A question to ask is if Sam Raimi applied horror tropes that usually apply to women and put them in a Marvel film.

How do we go from an emotionally/morally conflicted person who ultimately does the "right" thing even when it costs her everything to MUAHAHA I WILL KILL THE CHILD!! Even if the narrative reason is "well the darkhold undid all her character growth" to me that is a sloppy and disappointing choice; clearly they just wanted her to be cool and scary and they didn't give a darn about the person inside all that. Personally, I feel like this movie of her as the villain would have been fine had it come later. Honestly my only real issue with it was the fact that, as you said, it did not make sense for her to suddenly be evil right after the events of Wandavision. Had there been movies in between where she makes appearances and sees the remaining people get along with their friends and family and finding love etc her becoming bitter and the desire to have her kids back would make much more sense (and the fact that that longing is resurfaced by bitterness and hatred makes the transition into something ‘evil’ much more natural) and she’d be more likely to try something again, but Marvel just want to crack on with ‘oooh look at us and our multiverse concept’ without caring about the character arcs anymore because they know that they can. *sigh* At least I can mostly forgive it because at least we get a visually different movie (even tho yes Wandavision did it first lol) which the MCU has been NEEDING oh my god

I disagree. There was very little room to corrupt her after WandaVision. She sacrificed her family to help a couple thousand people. That's actually the hardest sacrifice in the MCU yet - note how Tony and Natasha made sure theur loved ones were safe by sacrificing themselves. It's made explicitly clear that Tony wouldn't have sacrificed his daughter to reverse the blip if it came down to it. And after that you turn her into one of the less compellinh villains? No way to do that. After WandaVision she should have emerged as a troubled hero, or remained in her seclusion. In no way can she be a villain... MoM should have introduced a villain from another universe, used Mordo or someone from the comics. Even an alternate Scarley Witch. Not the 616 Scarlet Witch.

  • @shishirmehendale8795

As hard as it is to believe, the problem with this movie actually isn't that Wanda Maximoff is the villain... the problem is that she ISN'T the villain. The Darkhold is. WandaVision did such an excellent job of giving Wanda complete agency over all of her actions - the good, the bad and the ugly. It was a true character study that was driven by Wanda's unconscious mind, her conscious intentions and her physical actions. Wanda exited her Westview quarantine as a beautifully rounded character and yet, WandaVision still managed to still make it feel like this was only the start of her journey. It was a true origin story for THE Scarlet Witch! DSitMoM, however, managed to completely strip Wanda of all agency, reducing her to a shell of A Scarlet Witch puppeteered by the Darkhold - the perfect plot device for Waldron to do absolutely anything he wanted with Wanda's character. LAZY WRITING AT ITS FINEST. Plus the exact reason why DSitMoM feels like it has no arc or message... the plot isn't really driven by Strange's actions and decisions. And you know what, fine, you can still grow his character by having him help Wanda learn her lesson based on her actions and decisions - he is a doctor after all. But none of her actions and decisions actually feel like hers if she is going to be an exoskeleton for the Darkhold! And you know what, the Darkhold as a corruptive artifact isn't even a poor concept, you can still retain Wanda's agency despite using the Darkhold as a morality bender. Just let us into Wanda's mind to see how it is corrupting her. The bare minimum way to do this was to make the Darkhold make her believe that her children were reborn in another universe and under threat! LIKE THE WANDAVISION POST CREDIT SCENE ESTABLISHED. And on that note let me make an even wilder proposition, a la the dialogue: Vision: “We’ve said goodbye before...it stands to reason that,” Wanda: “we’ll say hello again.” Imagine if the Darkhold made her hallucinate a Vision with a dark, corrupted colour palette pleading her to do anything to save their children reborn in another universe. How genuinely maddening would that have been for Wanda without annihilating her agency??!! That's a true mother storyline... we have seen that she won't consciously harm others to secure her own comfort, but will she consciously harm others to secure the safety of her own children??

Worst Wanda MoM takes compiled: *Getting triggered over Dr Strange not burning Wanda at the stake for Westview bc Wanda's the only Avenger who needs to be held accountable for their crimes(even if they're accidental, didn't kill anyone, she sacrificed everything to put an end to it when she became fully aware, and she now has to live on the run again for it). 'WandaVision was too scared to make Wanda the villain which was it's problem. They handled her with kid gloves, while MoM didn't' ("kid gloves" = writing her character with nuance, agency, and respect ok) *Ignoring the fact that Wanda was corrupted by the Darkhold, and calling her "unredeemable" 'Wanda is someone who uses her internal pain and loss to justify evil.' (actual take I saw someone make) 'If you don't like her writing in MoM, you've just turned on her character.' *Pretending as if Wanda fans honestly argue that Wanda was the hero of MoM as a straw man just so that person won't have to deal with good points Wanda fans make. 'Wanda Maximoff and the Scarlet Witch are two separate entities.' (which is what the writer Michael Waldron has been implying) 'WandaVision was a villain origin story.' And it goes on. Not to mention the fact that they basically just stated that her kids were never real completely craps on WandaVision, Wanda's sacrifice, and her status as a mother.

Scarlet Witch = Avatar of Chthon, this is the whole point of her arc, where the eventual pay-off will be, defying Chthon by not being what he wants her to be. Waldron doesn't get this and ignores the set-up of the conflict between Wanda and Chthon in WandaVision, when Agatha quotes Chthon from the Darkhold. The whole point is it is a struggle between Wanda and Chthon. The fact Wanda's powers are not called Chaos Magic and Strange is so nonchalant about her magic (which is the oldest magic and ultra rare) proves beyond doubt that Waldron and Raimi did not watch WandaVision at all. In Raimi's case I will go further and say it was directorial ego. Alot of directors think they shouldn't have to follow someone else's work Also, notice how in the MCU we see lots of fathers (Tony, Scott, Clint, Hank) but the women are all childless, in the case of Natasha and Wanda they are pointedly made barren.

15:40 "Also, hire actually experienced writers to do your scripts." Because that's the thing about Michael Waldron: he's clearly someone who got his job based on his connections, not his own merits. I'm not making that up, either. He doesn't have much in the way of writing experience. Before he wrote _Loki_ season 1, he was an assistant writer on _Community,_ an executive producer for a few episodes of _Good Game,_ and a producer on _Rick & Morty_ who only wrote ONE episode. That's his resume from before he wrote _Loki_ and _Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness._ And BTW, with _Loki,_ Waldron just repurposed an old sci-fi script he wrote a few years prior for the show.

I think I am tired of marvel and the mcu, I don’t think I’ll be watching any more of the movies. At least on the cinema, it’s not worth the price. The age of piracy is here again.

Like, I dunno. And I say that as someone who liked the _What If?_ episode where the change was that Christine was killed in the crash instead of Stephen injuring his hands.

Well, In wandavision, We saw wanda grow and heal, so when i saw her in MoM and saw that she had abandoned the "Ill learn this power" type character i was confused then realised, wandavision was purely to heal her grief with vision, which is why she didnt go to a reality with vision and her kids because she healed from vision, it was her children that broke her back open to her state before wandavisions events. I beleive since it was the darkhold that made her do these events, we should have saw wanda after wandavision, reading the darkhold and being corrupted slowly, that extra 20 minute scene could have helped the movie so much, it felt like a let down to the people who were scarlet witch fans as most of us can relate to wanda in some way or another.

Thank you! I felt the same about the movie. I watched Wanda Vision and absolutely LOVED it. Especially the slow unravelling of the plot, it was exceptional. The sheer pain that Wanda felt in the concluding moments with her family was so REAL. When in the last scene they showed Wanda reading about the Scarlet Witch and understanding her powers, I expected a different kind of struggle. I thought they would bring white vision back who wouldn't 'love' Wanda but more so use her to understand his own self, alongside that I imagined Wanda struggling to overpower the Darkhold because she has morals. Destroying the earth or bringing chaos to the multiverse after she fought so hard to save the it, went as far as to kill the love of her life and even gave up a picture perfect life just because people were hurting, doesn't add up. It seems like Wanda and Scarlet Witch are completely different according to MOM, as if Wanda has no control over her Scarlet Witch persona which again, makes no sense. Wanda Vision ended with Wanda learning how to control her powers which is chaos magic. Wanda by far is the most powerful hero in MCU. It doesn't make sense for them to turn her into an emotional villain who doesn't think twice before killing someone. The best thing about Wanda is the complexity and layers of her character, it's different from others. Amongst the holier than thou heros who indirectly make a mistake leading upto a calamity, Wanda's mistake with Westview wasn't intentional but direct. It was much more interesting to see than the little 'oopsies' by other marvel heros. With this movie, the whole character development of Wanda over the years, was totally flushed into the gutter. And if you ask me, Wanda is by far the most emotionally stable super hero, considering the tremendous amount of chaos magic instilled within her for being the Scarlet Witch. After going through so many tragedies, I highly doubt any other hero, with her kind of power would be able to do what she did at the end of Wanda Vision. Then in MOM all gone. I hated what they did to her character. The better have a GREAT comeback for Wanda.

Thank you for voicing my outrage omfg Along with the blatant misogyny, I just wanted to add in the awful implications for mental health and the antisemitism of this movie through Waldron’s writing. Wanda is clearly a character with trauma, and in WV the way she talks about her grief implies that it is extremely depressing for her and likely causing clinical depression. She feels as if it will drown her. And then in this movie, one of the only characters to ever express on screen in marvel their inner turmoil, depression, and trauma ends up committing suicide. Like not only is it one of the most tired tropes for a “redemption arc,” it’s also a horrible message for the real world. As for the antisemitism, Wanda as a character is supposed to be Jewish and Romani. Even though they didn’t cast her that way, that is STILL her roots and where she comes from. In this movie, she’s an “evil witch” who is chasing a young girl to suck her powers AND LIFE out of her for her own gains. This entire motivation is basically blood libel which is an extremely antisemitic trope about Jewish people using the blood of Christian children for power, youth, or whatever else.

I'll agree with everything you said except for the part about the antisemitism. Because here's the thing, Scarlet Witch being half-Jewish in the comics was nothing beyond just being a tick mark on her profile page. It had literally zero impact on the character in practice. The only thing tying her to it was because she was retconned into being Magneto's daughter for a while... which then got undone and hasn't been the case for nearly a decade; with MCU Wanda also not being his daughter either. And even when she _was_ still Magneto's daughter in the comics (which was a retcon to begin with, over 15 years after her debut), she never even met him until she was already an adult. Her Romani aunt and uncle that raised her weren't Jewish, so she didn't grow up adapting any Jewish culture/religion whatsoever. Her Jewish background has literally never mattered in a story and she's never shown caring about it either. She did however (and still does) explicitly describe herself as a pagan several times.

  • @magikphoenix140

    @magikphoenix140

Even though her Jewish background wasn’t that big of a part of her character, it’s still a part of her character. It not being that big of a part doesn’t erase the antisemitism in this writing in MoM because at the end of the day, the character is still Jewish.

Even tho I agree with you, I still loved Elizabeth Olsen's performance in Multiverse of Madness. Because of the fact that her acting was just phenomenal, I didn't even realize that they didn't make her character good. But I think they can still save her character in the future MCU-projects!🤞🏼 I'm still a fan of Wanda, but just because of Elizabeth Olsen.🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm still so confused at why exactly Sam Raimi didn't watch WandaVision. Like, why wouldn't you watch such an incredible show? I thought THIS was going to happen in MoM: - Wanda being under control by a villain (Mephisto or Nightmare) thanks to the book because she was very vulnerable at the end of WV, especially after she lost everything again. (-> that's what I got from the WV end-credit scene, tbh🤷🏻‍♂️) - Wanda therefore becomes a villain and needs to do whatever the "bigger" villain wants (catching America Chavez through the multiverse or manipulate reality for the villain..., something like that) otherwise she wouldn't get her kids back - Doctor Strange saves her from their influence on her - Wanda realizes that she needs to move on and save the world - Doctor Strange and Wanda fight Nightmare or Mephisto through the multiverse Looks like I was completely wrong🤷🏻‍♂️

As a Wanda stan I will be completely honest. I respectfully don't see Wanda the same way you do but I respect the way you are unhappy. I think Wanda is a character that everyone sees differently. Some understand her 100% some don't at all and it just shows how interesting the character actually is. I have seen so many different views on Wanda and I understand all of them. You're definitely not wrong on Wanda, MOM and WV are the same stories but in WV the story is told from Wanda's perspective and MOM is told from Stephen's and I agree it was not as good. Damn I can't believe as a Wanda stan I agreed with quite a lot of your statements (but I still don't think Wanda is assasinated), I can't believe people complained about Jac Shaiffer on Wandavision when she understood Wanda more then any other writer and director ever. I must have been the only one to suspect Wanda's heel turn to the dark side after Wandavision because the ending scene of Wandavision seemed very telling that she'd go bad. I suppose it was up to interpritation but when Wanda said "I dont understand this power, but I will" and secluded herself; I took it as her planning a way to get what she wants back without being interrupted - not so that she wouldn't hurt anyone in the process. She was hurting people just by living her dream life. Imagine that. And they were hurting because they physically couldnt handle her grief, a grief she's been carrying and meant to carry on her own. They get to escape it but she just has to live with it? Perfect villain arc. Add the darkhold on top of that and I think that's a surefire way to set off a powerful heel turn.

This video contains some valid points that you mentioned. The writers were primarily to blame for the drastic change in MoM. I know there were reshoots, but because they didn't watch Wandavision and there was no context, the transition was terrible. They used the Darkhold as a stand-in, but her actions were still heinous. Even after watching this film eight times and noticing the poor writing, I can't help but feel invested in this character; she is so morally devastated that I can't help but care about her. Elizabeth Olsen's acting also played a role because she is amazing. Also, I had the impression that, prior to Wanda, she was one of the only females who received a lot of attention. She is, in my opinion, one of the most intriguing. I believe she is not dead because of her popularity and upcoming content, and I hope that when she returns, her writing will be much better, whether she remains netrual or has a redemption. But one thing is for sure I can't help but love tragedy that is Wanda Maximoff 🙏

I’ve been hesitant to watch the film because the last thing I wanted was to watch her be demonised (and isn’t it gross how women w/ power are only redeemable when they have kids / cough cough the depiction of a sympathetic Cersei vs an evil Daenerys) But the dark hold thing I fully understood and was ready to accept as the reasoning. After all with a little explanation, she’s easily a tragic figure. My dad and I were a little excited after finding out it’s the dark hold, because we’d both watched Agents of SHIELD where they spent an entire season showing it’s corruption effects and the inherent tragedy of all the ppl affected. Each villain was also a victim. To watch your video… and many others… ans see that they don’t at ALL treat Wanda as if she’s a) toxically manipulated by dark magic or b) a metaphor for suffering an identity altering illness like dementia/trauma/ptsd (all of which would fit her story so well). To have others, who have no hope of taking her own physically, not even ATTEMPT to cure her. This is also why I hate the erasure of her relationship w/ Clint (canon lost girl guardian). And now I see it’s because male directors have the audacity to look down on content they deem inferior to them. How dare they not do their homework? I recently found out a director of Harry Potter never watched/read the series (which is why despite working on one of the most important thematic books in the series, the entire film was tone deaf).

Here's the problem of Disney these days, They can't make a pure evil female antagonist. Even they need to make their own backstory of how they have a bad childhood, get abused or losing their family and friends. And in the finale of tv show or movies, the protagonist is always forgiving them or they win in the end. Probably the closest pure evil woman in MCU is Hela from Thor Ragnarok, get imprisoned by Odin for her entire life, wants to seek revenge and is very ruthless. Now, let's take a look of Stormfront from The Boys Season 2. She is a literal Nazi who is also a pure racist, a good manipulator and also just pure evil. She has lost her family a long time ago and already moved on since she doesn't age as the first experiment of Compound V and she's more than 100 years old. She also has good personality to make people love and hate her. She even can charm Homelander, the main antagonist of the show. She just purely evil and she has no redeem quality which is how an evil female character supposed to be.

I do blame the people in charge of the MCU for not providing better direction for the overarching narrative. I can feel your passion in this it's great. I loved wandavision and I actually like doctor Strange too. So when they announced both would be in MoM I was ecstatic. What they did with them was so disappointing. Particularly Wanda. They definitely hint that she's going down a dark path. Which is fine, actually would have been a more enjoyable film for me if she was corrupted throughout the film and turns at the end. But she just nose dives in right away. I can still scarcely believe it. And the fact that the director didn't even watch the previous work before making this film. I mean come on, I'm a fan of older Raimi movies but what in the world man. I also did not know they rewrote the movie because the first version was testing bad. That is funny now I wanna know what it was originally gonna be. I will say your rant in the middle comparing the grief of the 2 characters felt a little off. I always feel like in real life we shouldn't compare and measure people's grief against each other. So it would be wrong to say somebody shouldn't be sad because they are watching somebody they love marry somebody else because somebody else lost their love to death. But for real, your quip that they Danaeris Targaryand her was pretty spot on. I can't for the life of me understand how people watch that and rank it so high on their lists of mcu movies. I'm like you. I used to be so so so into the whole mcu stuff. But after Endgame it's like the spark is gone. I don't watch everything opening weekend. I haven't even watched all the shows. Eh. Still, I don't know if it was true. "White Man Sad" was literally the plot of Strange in the "What if" show, the main Dr Strange was over Christine long time ago, so he got the same bad treatment as Wanda of using the same arc of a show, the only diference Is that this Strange didn't end up destroying the universe.

Despite how much I liked the movie and how much i adore Wanda, you are 100% right. First, why would you do a movie without researching the character - that's literally the bare minimum. Second, the things that are good about this film, as you said, are the cinematography, CGI, and I would include the music (I am in love with the soundtracks, especially 'A Cup of Tea'). After 2-3 rewathcings of the movie (DISCLAIMER: I quited the MCU fanbase somewhere after IW due to personal reasons, not cuz of the MCU itself, so when i watched MOM, i was not really invested in the 'PrEvEoSlY oN' plot, a.k.a the disney+ shows), I started to understand why people HATE this movie so much. Third, I personally think that people (including me) watch the movie only cuz of Elizabeth Olsen. Let's be honest, if it was not her, the movie would have been trash most likely. And, on top of all that, she was paid only 2M$, and Benedict was paid 5-10M$, which is kinda embarrassing. The sad thing is that I was one of those who used the Darkhold excuse, but after your video, I sort of changed my mind. Anyway, thanks for the amazing video, in my opinion, your 'Wanda's Character Assasination' has the best explanation so far. Gotta stay tuned for new updates^^.

Interesting take. You mentioned the misogyny of the movie, but Marvel's narrative is that hate for this movie is due to misogyny. Projection from a movie studio? how's that for irony? Btw, I loved the character of Scarlet Witch, and I'm glad I didn't see this movie.

Hi!! Thanks for this amazing video, I too was so thoroughly disappointed by Wanda's character journey in the movie. Post WandaVision, Wanda became my favorite character simply because how well they were able to portray Wanda's emotional journey throughout the show. And coming to MoM, they simply made a cheap reboot of that and it totally didn't make any sense to have such a radical character shift. I feel if they really wanted Wanda to be the villain, they could have shown her descent progressively as the movie went on and give her solid enough reasons to do so. But how do we explain this to someone who didn't even put the effort of watching your lead villain's journey!!

@@skulliebythesea Jac Schaeffer was spot on in seeing the Darkhold as being about wordplay and trickery. Chthon likes to trick and deceive. But Waldron can't write that, writing the Darkhold as manipulative would require real skill as a writer, The whole theme of Wanda being a character, subject to the manipulations of a cruel author (Chthon), was missed. Schaeffer conceived an idea that Wanda "destroying the world" was in fact only destroying the Hex, Wanda thus sees through Chthon's trick and destroys the Hex. Schaeffer wasn't allowed to use her idea because they wanted to use the destroying the world thing in this movie, so her clever idea got replaced by Waldron's dumb one.

You know, I connected so deeply with Wanda when Wandavision premiered. The show was a cathartic fix for many people battling grief, depression, or mental illness... but as I sat in the theater watching Multiverse of Madness, I could not figure out why I had this overwhelming sadness watching it. I enjoyed the movie but literally drove home in silence and couldn't figure out why because I enjoyed seeing Wanda be so badass despite me not understanding why they were setting her back from WV. It wasn't until I saw your video that I realized why my subconscious was so perturbed... & I agree with your points 100%... not only did the way her character was written cast a shadow over her growth in Wandavision, it also rocked the foundation of a character I had emotionally connected with and wanted to see grow further.

I think you're largely right. The MCU's Wanda Maximoff has always been a favorite character of mine, and while I am still very split on WandaVision as a whole, I can respect it for being different and attempting to explore her trauma. Phase 4 has assassinated quite a few of it's returning characters (including, but not limited to: Sharon, Loki, Natasha, Thanos, Vision (in What If ep5), and even Strange himself), but none of them have been done as dirty as she was. However, I would say you're underplaying how much of a role Wanda had pre-Phase 4. Her story arcs in Age of Ultron, Civil War, and Infinity War were all beautifully handled despite not being at the forefront.

"The Scarlet Witch is not born, she is forged." - To forge means to repeatedly smash till you get what you want. The tragedies in her life are orchestrated; they are no accident. "She needs no incantation" - as an avatar, she does not need to summon from the chaos god. "The Scarlet Witch needs no coven" = Wanda is Maiden, Mother, and Widow, thus she embodies all three phases of womanhood. She thus requires no coven as she is the trinity. She is named Scarlet Witch by Chthon, "because a namer has mastery of the named".

12:07 Okay but they did try. Strange went to Kamar Taj to prepare its defenses but before the attack started he made another plea for Wanda to reconsider and even said she was justifiably angry and she told him to go fuck himself. Then after watching her butcher his fellow sorcerers and hurtling through the multiverse with Chavez, the girl Wanda is trying to murder, he couldn’t exactly “appeal to her humanity” when his priority is Chavez and having just recently watched Wanda kill a bunch of people with no restraint whatsoever.

And I want to add that I’m not necessarily disagreeing with your video but it also seems as though you’re downplaying Wanda’s wrongs when she quite literally kidnapped and brainwashed a whole town. It doesn’t really matter if she thought she was helping it’s still a massive encroachment of people’s freewill by forcing them to act out in your play about your dead husband and fake children.

This movie broke my love of Marvel. Especially, because in the comics Wanda’s children are lost souls in the underworld that need her help. The show hints at that when she says thank you for choosing me. She knows they are out there somewhere in her dimension and need her help yet she is going off to steal her own children. It makes no sense. Also not only did this movie repeat Wanda’s arch, it also repeated Dr. Strange’s arch from his first movie. It was a poorly done rehash that ruined both Characters
