This is so true. Apple is one of the few companies that puts so much effort in making their product experience consistent and harmonious. They have been able to replicate it even in their ads and keynotes. In regards to a brand's personality, this consistent experience and visual voice directly correlates to brand loyalty from the users. I think every designer should learn from what apple does and how they do it.

Good point, however the reason why a lot of people critique apple is for all the reasons you described. A lot of users don't care about 100 variations of pointer and would prefer to see more substantial, functional changes that would allow them to get more out of their device (other than nice animations). Apple focus is on experience, unfortunately now it comes at a price of innovation.

Maybe there was a value in something before when they start to think about it, but I think they should always keep their eyes open and reassess features and change course rather than work on something and ship it when it's too late.

What this video means to me is that companies have their reasons. But as consumers, our needs evolve. Android has been an instrument into shaping and also fulfilling those needs that Apple wasn't able to. There's also Windows. Why some folks say they can design things in two days, is because they have interacted with that feature long enough to understand it. like Widgets. That's been with Android long before Apple released it. Split screen view, bezzel less design, the use of NFC etc - years have passed before Apple implemented them. Apple has many strengths. But you can't ignore that Android based products and users move on fast - because that's what technology is. It evolves because it needs to be intuitive to enable it's users.

Thanks for your comment Ria A! You're right, companies have their reasons, different business models and different goals. We're are talking about this topic from the designer's perspective and why you as a designer should try to understand the decisions that lead to a change in the user experience. In the case of Apple and other companies, their position is to provide stability to their users and roll out their changes when they can be sure that the execution is going to be very good and it makes sense. When a designer says that they can design that in two days, they are not taking into consideration all what's behind that change and probably because they already know the outcome.

TLDR; what books, topics and sources on business should I as a Designer start consume to learn more about the business side of product development? I have (thanks to you) already Lean Startup, Hacking Growth and Good Strategy Bad Strategy on my list. But what else? Thanks! Actually, I think I'll rewatch the recent video about non-ux resources for designers as well! Hey! This is not a 100% related to this video, but as I have been going through the Masterclass, the Workshopper Playbook and more... As I am learning these new things and at the same practicing facilitation of Workshops and hopefully Design Sprints I find a need to learn more about the business side of product development. I am getting curious about what books and topics I as an Interaction Designer should start with to learn more about the business side of things. This is also a result of you at AJ & Smart usually stress the importance, as in this video as well, designers that want to grow or "become great" need to learn about the business side of product development. Where should I start? (I already have Lean Startup, Hacking Growth and Good Strategy Bad Strategy on my list. I also planning to start reading Stratechery. Is there anything else?) Thanks!

Great video! I share the same opinion and have similar criticisms for the sprint method, especially for these cases. You have to be very careful because, did'nt many things can be done in two days or in a two-week sprint. Not that the method is not efficient, but the workaholic style has its specifics spaces. Definitely, to work with products of extreme public of reach, all care is little, any wrong change can cost billions, in addition to ruining an experience projected for years. Part of the amount delivered by Apple is precisely in these fine points, with recognition instead of memoization and consistency in everything. Forever to deliver the best experience possible, at any time, leaving the user satisfied at the end of the journey. And make no mistake, it costs a lot and does not happen overnight. Thanks to share such an important thought! :)

By stable, strategic iteration it’s probably easier to retain existing users while attracting new ones. I mean attracting new users is great, but if you do it at the expense of losing existing customers then you’re running to stand still.

Designers who talk down about Apple, probably have beautiful portfolios, they expected Apple to come out with something WOW; huge change, unexpected micro-interactions, and so on, and when it didn't happen, they bash them using their design knowledge. But for more than a billion Apple users all over the world that mostly aren't designers, when they updated their iOS then can adapt to the new things easily, got them helped using it, and everything happened with a hassle-free process. I think that matter is more important for a user-centered company like Apple rather than satisfying some designers

I totally agree with you because for a small prototype or wireframe we go under several process like user research, usability testing and lots of iterations till the final product. I think when a designer can't understand another designer then he/she has to work on empathy and keen observational skills, because a giant company would go under rigorous stages for an approval. And its all about usability not just a toy to use and throw ! And that is achieved only through slow and steady process because its universal product not a local one. "World's most popular operating system" :D ok. Yes, I agree with you that many people have no clue about this, but thats the internet fuelled by their cocky marketing claiming every feature to be ultra-innovative. The actual world's most popular operating system -Android- has simply a different, more experimental approach. But I would argue: If it means the feature will arrive 4 years sooner, isn't it at all worth it?

Thanks for your comment Matej Rajtár! Both companies have different business models. One part of Apple's is to wait for several iterations in order for the execution to be on point and keep the user experience stable, whereas Android's is sometimes more experimental and more willing to risk flops. Sometimes that feature can come 4 years sooner and not be perfect, which can disrupt your experience. The point in general is that as a designer you have to consider the bigger picture behind every decision of any big company before you jump to criticise their new update.

But then again it's the same company behind MacOS which still requires a user to drag a drive into trash to eject it, or hides app menu options until a key is pressed without any affordences to indicate that, or not allowing to copy and paste files, or delete a file with a delete key, or still forcing app menu to the top of the desktop even on multiple/large screens.., Or... I get the message here, and shitting on a product just because something looks simple is just... shitty. However... This video also kinda feels like making excuses for lacking features that users have enjoyed on other platforms for years. It doesn't matter how long it took to implement it to the end user. For them it should have been there years ago. And even from UX Designers, the amount of time it takes to design a product should *never* be an argument to absolve you from critique. Never. Because frankly, if this would have been a valid argument, we would still be stuck with that terrible Safari redesign. Many people, many UX designers on various platforms pointed out that they "could have done a better job". And guess what? They were right, and even Apple eventually had to admit that this just didn't work. Just because it's Apple, just because they may have been thinking about it for years, doesn't make it a good design decision, and it is ridiculous to say otherwise. Also, iOS is not "the world's most popular operating system", that's Android (2.5b), then Windows (1.6b), then iOS (1.4b).

I respect Apple. But that doesn't blind me from the position they put themselves into. They have a stance on how revolutionary their products and services are. When I watch WWDC, I go with a childlike wonder, expecting them to dazzle me once more. I know that's not real. They are a huge ass company, and they got themselves here by being revolutionary years back, they don't have to make a revolution every year. It's OK to polish stuff every year, to add bits and pieces here and there. And I know, I know, WWDC is freaky, is nerdy, is weird. ("Now we have WIDGETS!!!! YEAHHHHHH **APPLAUSE**" ) But again, the new things they did with the dashboard feel boring. Boring is good and make sense for a tech giant like Apple. But for a nerd watching WWDC its just that a boring addition, that's was due. Don't jump on the other bandwagon. "It's so easy to critique Apple, Google, Amazon, blah, blah" and don't blow comments like "I can design a UI in 2 days" out of proportion. KZread is filled with great and shitty concepts for Mac and Windows UI. Yes, they don't take into account the business side, so what? Let them have their fun.

Thanks for your comment Mostacho Irregular! You're right, they became one of the biggest companies in the world by being revolutionary a few years ago, after having gone through some mayor flops, and now they are about providing stability to their users by making all changes very smooth. Now, that might seem boring from a pure design perspective if you're not considering the business side of their decisions, but nevertheless that's a huge part of why and how they do things. And of course everyone can have their fun, the point about people saying "I could've design that in 2 days" is that they are not considering the bigger picture and that shows the maturity of their career.

*I always have respected Apple everytime when it comes to UX/UI design... except that one time in iOS 10, when they redesigned Apple Music* Where they suddenly decided that big ass, screaming B o l d T o p H e a d e r s, big spacy, early soft UI are a good idea that day. But in reality : everything is pixel misaligned, no sense of clear hierarchy, and clearly they're experimenting something new & experimental to differentiate themselves vs Spotify (and the competition). Something of a (literally) bold design decision too, adapting iPad / Apple TV, 10ft UI even to as small as a phone (maybe because of accessibility reasons as well). But clearly it's not ready for primetime yet, and it's not even the same design language on all apps that day, leading to experience inconsistency on those iOS devices when it got released. I honest passionately hated that aesthetics those exact day, and genuinely believe and hoped it will never caught on. Luckily the industry and them grew, innovated (notable mention : FB Messenger redesign, spark on Dark Mode revolution as well) and finally figured it out here finally in iOS 14, where that aesthetic is finally perfected and fully realized. Like how iOS 9 is the culmination and perfection of iOS 7's thin aesthetics. Also I don't respect them on the Newton too. (Well that's understandable because those are post-firing Jobs, pre-almost-bankrupcy, Apple Dark times)
