Great video.. thank you very much! As a more senior-level designer, I'd love some tips for how to interview. There is a difference between interviewing for more junior level designers. For instance, I need to show that I can manage teams and projects, to work with Product Owners effectively, and to understand how to present to stakeholders, etc.

1. not networking with others. 2. not doing research about the particular company. 3. rushing the design process to showcase in your portfolio and end up designing a stuff that is not useful or a bad UX. Communication is the most important thing in UX design.

I really want to specialize but most company’s in my country want someone that’s good at everything 🤦🏼‍♀️ and ofcourse a junior with 5 or more years experience 😒

Those companies are usually start ups or medium size businesses, who want multi tasking designers, good with a various things. Companies like Google or Apple will never want generalised designers, rather they prefer specialised in one field

Sorry to hear that Jessica! Anshika Lx is spot on on this one. Big tech companies don't look for designers, who will do everything. But some start ups will do that indeed. If you find yourself in that situation, then try to at least be able to perform the basic tasks in different areas but still specialise in one field. Hope this was helpful. Best of luck.

@@Anshikakhola can I push back on this a bit? I think the specialist vs generalist issue relies largely on your longer term career goals. If you’re interested in a career as a subject matter expert (SME) it is best to have a very deep knowledge of one (or maybe a limited few) areas. On the other hand, if you’re interested in a design/team lead or design exec, it’s better to have a more general, “T shaped” skill set - e.g., being able to do a lot in a few areas of expertise and a little in a lot of related areas of expertise - because you’ll need to understand how all the pieces fit together to be able to support your team. Theres also the issue of the rapid pace of change in tech. Ive seen a lot of people get laid off and struggle to find work because their skill set is too specialized and they fall behind the market. For example, how many web designers or Information Architects do you know? Those fields have been absorbed into other UX disciplines and those who couldn’t pivot got left behind. Having T shaped skills gives you more flexibility in the long run. It also depends on your industry. The start up life may not be for everyone, but realistically, most people cannot work for FAANG. However, I know plenty of designers at other large companies (Spotify, Under Armour, Reddit, Bethesda Studios…) that have done well as generalists. And in fact, many companies are moving towards “product design” roles, which are multidisciplinary by nature. Speaking of which, on a more philosophical level, I kind of don’t understand how a UX designer can be a true “specialist” seeing as UX design is a multidisciplinary field 🤔

Thank you for this very nice video. I found all the suggestions very helpful. I specially liked the point about Feedback. I believe we give and receive feedback all our lives, everyday and in all situations. It’s just that the people and situations are not always professional but personal. Knowing how to give constructive feedback effectively and respectfully helps our relationships both in personal life and professional. Equally knowing how to take feedback without being egoistic and keeping an open mind helps us grow. Thanks again for a nice video covering an important subject.

Why rounded corner buttons and why square buttons? : well, you can use rounded buttons for less prioritized actions that are not gonna cost you, for example, to navigate to another view or submit a form, turn on/off something, send a request to the server, open up a sheet or popup. But square buttons for actions which are gonna cost you in some way, for example, "Buy it now," "Subscribe to our stupid news letters or updates," "Add to cart," "Pay now," "Cancel," etc... So the user will adapt to it in the long run and knows even before proceeding with the action. This is how I would answer your Nokia Interview question if I was there.

Sure we can rely on Apple/Google's guidelines, but when you making your 30s app it's become just boring to repeat the same ideas over and over. But I noticed some companies really want you to know these guidelines. I think this is absolutely not good because every person can open documentation and look inside how to make a button, but to make something unique - that's the challenge.

If you are interested in doing UI or UX, yes this could be the right step for you. Just like how you learned graphic design, you can learn UI UX. There are a lot of free resources/videos/tutorials that are there on youtube and elsewhere. I think the best way to learn something is by just doing it without worrying if you’d be successful or not. You can tweak your resume for UI/UX jobs, but do mention your graphics design background because that does show that you do understand some basics of design.

Thanks for sharing your opinion XAXAMAMA! But we would have to disagree with you on this one. If a person is going to a job interview and is not even willing to bring suggestions on how that company can improve because that is not paid, then that person is going to have a harder time finding a job. We think that there are occasions, where a person can do free work and actually stand out and advance in their career. We have done that as individuals and as a company and it has helped us a lot. @@AJSmart I saw that video, it's nice but with all due respect - again it's free work. Now you are expecting that people who apply to work for your company going to do suggest SoMtHiNg smart but without diving into the product/service and understanding the needs of its users and all of that but makes it free. When I was a Junior Designer there were two cases of companies (one tech company and one studio) stealing the work that I did for them. Not cool but it's not really a point. I was applying a lot and most of the companies expect from UI/UX/Product designers to bring them some suggestions right away and be able to talk about the product/service (without analytics, data, researches and so on) but again if the product is complex it's almost impossible (most of the time) to do it. Now I work for one of those BiG TeCh companies and in the very beginning, they actually paid for work (test) that I did, gave me clear briefing with some data and some time to prepare and talk about it. So again in my opinion free work is free work. If you wanna see how the person thinks and solves problems give him a test for like 30 min, if you wanna see how he designs then look at his portfolio. If you need something extra well then pay because that poor designer has like 10 interviews when every other person is waiting for him to bring something right away.

Advice 10 - don't think too much about Anastasia when watching this video

I don't think this is anything unique for only UX or product designers? 1 Be humble and honest. 2 Research the company. 3 Doing something extra than just a simple résumé/ keep yourself updated of what's going on in the world (Google and Apple) 4 Explain your (design/craft) process This is common intelligence for any modern profession. Why do Designers believe they are too unique? Sorry, but most of them just are average! (SMH)
