    this conversation is so dumb. Lets look at what we used to have: cab drivers only. have you ridden in a cab lately? anyone else think its a REALLY sleezy way to get around? are you even more grossed out by the medallion system? Now lets look at what uber brings to the table: a common sense way to network rides in cars that arent nasty af. with drivers who actually speak english (at least thats my experience here in south florida AKA little fucking cuba). Uber isn't perfect. But in my opinion this is really long overdue.

    @@kuriadams9138 People will pay more for American made goods. The only question is: "How much more?". If you sold a hammer for $10 that said made in china on it and another one that said made in USA for $11, you'd sell both. But when you start going 2x, 3x, 4x, that's when it "fails" as you put it. Which is more of a problem of pricing it right than proof that "buy America" isn't effective. TLDR: American made is a plus but it has to be priced right.

    You didn't even cover the worst about uber. Uber effectively works as an employer for the drivers, while "technicaly" the drivers aren't employees. So, the company makes tons of money with the drivers work, while not holding ANY labor resposability. The company doesn't have to pay vacations, maternity leave, health compensations... anything. It lives in a legal loophole where a century of labor rights conquests are inexistent.

    +Thiago Monteiro So...? If the Uber drivers don't like it, they can choose not to work there. No one is forcing them to. This should apply to all work. Get the government out of the way, and we'd have so many more jobs and a booming economy, I couldn't even imagine the prosperity. But there's way too much entitlement for that to ever happen.

    +UnknownXV i think you missed his point, labor laws are there to prtect the working man, if i am going to do something for money for someone else im an employee, and should be granted the protections allowed by the government same as any other employee. currently the way uber is set up no one who drives for them is technically an employee. ill note that i live in canada and i dont believe we have uber here but i dont really know. i assume they should probly fall under independent contractors and pay their taxes as such in that manor.

  • @UnknownXV

    Daniel Bricker Why? I don't want to impose any force on my employer. I don't recognize as having any right to do so. If I don't like the job, the working conditions, the pay, etc.. I can negotiate to have them improved, and if my employer refuses, I can quit. Those are my only moral options. Using the government to force my employer to do what I want, that isn't moral.

  • @igormachado4909

    @igormachado4909

    +Daniel Bricker the difference is, people are free to choose whether or not to work for Uber. If it such a terrible employer, they'll soon run out of drivers, that's the simple truth. Labor rights are good to stop big corporations from exploring people that have no choice, but Uber is the exact opposite of it. The worker can do as much work as it pleases him, he can leave whenever he wants, etc. Hell, he can even have another job. There's no point in accusing Uber of being anti-ethical towards workers when the workers are completely fine with it.

  • @MiketheCabbie
    @MiketheCabbie8 жыл бұрын

    As a 19-year veteran cabbie, I gotta speak out. It seems that most people's impressions of taxi services is dictated strictly by what they've seen in movies and TV. In 19 years of driving a cab in my city, I have not had ONE passenger log any of the complaints that Daniel has listed. Also, I've accepted credit/debit cards for over 3 years now. Frankly, no cab driver has an excuse to not accept plastic anymore, since you can do it with a simple smartphone app. Uber has pretty much taken over my city's night life/college crowd, which until then was my primary source of income. The turnabout happened seemingly overnight, and I felt more than a little bit betrayed by this city that I had served for so long. It was like being in a better-than-average marriage for over 15 years, then suddenly having your spouse serve you divorce papers one morning at breakfast. But for all that, I wouldn't have had a problem with them, IF THEY ONLY WOULD FOLLOW THE SAME RULES WE DO. I don't know, nor do I care, how crooked the taxi services are in other cities, but in mine, we're pretty much on the square. We're subjected to annual statewide criminal record checks and drug tests, in order to renew our taxi driver permits every year. The vehicles are inspected every year by the city Dept. of Transportation, and must be kept in excellent condition, both mechanically AND cosmetically. You have so much as a dent, you don't get your permit. But most importantly, and the main grievance I have against Uber, is that I, as a taxi owner/operator, am required, BY LAW, to register my vehicle with the state as a vehicle-for-hire. Not only does this mean higher annual registration renewal costs, but substantially higher insurance costs. I say, if Uber wants in on my racket, they should pay the price of admission like everybody else. Also, contrary to what Dan said, NOT just anyone can be an Uber driver. They specifically say that they require vehicles to be 2005 or newer, which would disqualify me even if I applied to do it. (Mine is a 2003 model--albeit in excellent condition, as legally mandated.) Otherwise, hell, I might have given it a go myself--except my boss at my cab company has said he'll fire any driver who signs up to be one. As you can see, I'm kinda trapped. I like my job, otherwise I wouldn't have done it for nearly two decades. I wouldn't mind signing up for the service, as I am quite well-known in my city, and would like the chance to serve my faithful customers again. I would rather do both.....I would drive Uber to SUPPLEMENT my dwindling income from my primary cab job, but it seems like I'm locked in my spot. Hopefully, in a year, I'll have saved enough to buy a newer model vehicle, then we'll see what happens. But if I can do it, my clientele will have the peace of mind of knowing that they're being driven by a legitimate professional, with decades of experience, and the ability to keep them entertained.......I'm also a singing cabbie.

    +MiketheCabbie It's not a myth that many individual cabs or even whole companies are not just shady, but disgusting. 'round about where I grew up, the nicest cab service couldn't (or wouldn't) remove the stench of bad weed from their vehicles, and the next step down tended to be unable to wash out the stains of beer or vomit; the latter company was the favoured ride of party-goers. Plenty of individual cars aren't getting refurbished to accommodate credit transfers as well. When I moved quite far away, I discovered some cab services that weren't the cultural equivalent of Pabst Blue Ribbon. It was a revelation. Still, while some drivers, cars, and companies aren't scum, that doesn't invalidate the myriad experiences across the globe of those that are.

    Alec Skinner, I'm glad you had a change of heart. Uber does a lot more sketchy shit than what's on this video and when people say that cab drivers are crying because they now have competition couldn't be father from the truth, we're upset about the unfair business tactics of the competition and how they exploit their own drivers to make the public think that the cab company's are charging too much. The truth is were not, 100% of my income as a cab driver comes from a percentage of the meter and 100% of the tips. Uber has a sliding scale and they wouldn't be able to get their drivers to honor these pathetically low rates if they didn't supplement it by giving them the opportunity to earn more when it is busy. The argument is that, well, a customer can choose not to pay the higher rates and that's true but if they weren't allowed to charge more then they wouldn't be able to undercut us so much and why wouldn't we be pissed off if the same politicians who are telling us we're NEVER allowed to charge more than what's on the meter all of a sudden invites/takes a huge bribe to allow competition in that not only is allowed to undercut us but also is able to fund that by charging way more than we are allowed to when it's busy? If you owned a legitimate business I can guarantee you that you'd be furious if some competition came in and continually undercut you because they don't have to pay for their product and then told your customer base that you're a piece of shit for charging too much. One thing I can guarantee for a certainty is that Uber rides wouldn't be even close to that cheap if Uber actually had to buy their fleet, pay for commercial insurance and had to hire their employees and that NOTHING to do with technology.

Let me break it down to you why Uber is bad: -Uber is illiegal in most countries (because they don't follow the same rules as taxis) -Most drivers don't have background checks (they might over-charge, assault, or kidnap you) -Does not pay taxi fees to the government (Money to build and maintain road systems in cities comes from Taxi's and bus services, so if taxi driver's don't make an income we won't have any proper roads/street lights, traffic lights etc (prepare for potholes & collisions) -Not licensed (Uber drivers many not have a full knowledge of routes due to lack of training so guess what? being a Taxi driver is still a PROFESSIONAL job) -No passenger insurance (Good luck getting into an accident while in a Uber, you're not covered, they don't give a fuck about you. If injured, you pay from your own pocket) People think Taxi driver's are stupid because most of them can't speak english and they deserve what's happening. First of all, what are Taxi driver's known commonly for being? yeah, Doctors! So, they are not that stupid, its a case of language barrier. They have families and children to put food on the table just like your parents, and you'd be damned too if someone comes and steal there jobs.

Whereas, Uber cabs may be largely new because Uber is relatively new and drivers aren't steady, they get a bunch of new ones all the time, the older ones keep quitting, once they realize the income is peanuts. I know guys like you like it because it's real cheap, wait until you get a monkey on a carriage, then you'll realize how screwed up the service can be.

    I've used Uber one time. I needed a ride from my hotel in SF to the airport. A taxi was going to cost over $80. Uber and Lyft were going to cost just over $30. There could be a Lyft driver at my hotel in 32 minutes. An Uber in 3 minutes. I used Uber and it was a great experience.

    Super e-Z Taxi No, you're incorrect, Uber IS a service (what else would it be classified as?). Fair enough, you can call uber a type of taxi service, I won't argue that, but it's irrelevant. If I wanted to go to my friends house like less than 2 kilometers away from me, a taxi would cost me about $15, where an uber would cost me about $10. In the end I couldn't give less of a shit about you or your entire industry. If it gets me there for cheaper, I'm going to use it. Bye Bye taxis, nice knowing you...

As the US becomes more socialistic (give it another 20 to 30 years and we'll be full bore socialists) there will be less and less innovation. Without innovation we will only fall further behind in the global economy. This may never happen or be really dark...but even becoming a 2nd or 3rd world country in a couple centuries. This all could be the dark side of my mind talking....but given the entire Uber and taxi debate, jobs are jobs, and in America people still have the opportunity to find jobs. Sure, they may not be exactly where they want them or for the pay they want. But, there are jobs everywhere...if someone doesn't like low pay, guess what? We have education, trade school, and certifications in industries to improve your pay. The American dream has changed. It isn't to own a home raise 2.5 kids and have your white picket fence. That shit doesn't happen anymore...too many damn people, not enough land, and lots of dumbfucks out there. The American dream is to make your choices however you wish and afford the opportunities you can from those choices. Unfortunately, many people don't want to do the work it takes to improve their lifestyle. That's isn't up to others...it is up to them.

These same people are likely dedicated to what they're doing, thus the frustration. In a normal everyday situation, you are thus talking to the same person, but on another level and in a wholly different context. For short, don't be stupid. They are interested in making a point demanding fairness when they protest - When they're driving for you, that's a completely different scenario. There is no need to take drastic measures because it's an everyday situation and they're interacting with a client. Use your brain.

    Both sides of this argument make good points. Uber should definitely improve their driver screening and training, and regular taxi companies should stop extorting the public under the auspices of being allegedly more professional. My daughter (22) is forced to catch taxis to work and back every day and quite frankly a more economical option but with security for a young lady who works shifts late at night has to be found. Uber does not exist where we live (smaller town in the UK) and she works one day a week just to cover the cost of her taxi fare for that week, while having to put up with some very dodgy drivers, many of whom she has reported to the company to no avail. So much for "trained professionals"... Uber may not be better, but maybe the competition would be a good thing?

    Counter-argument: none of the claims that he makes against Uber drivers, cannot be made against taxi drivers. Take the one who stalked a passenger-- well, even Cracked isn't claiming that the uber driver got the information from the uber ap. A taxi driver could have just as easily gotten the contact information, taken the picture, et cetera. Taxi drivers may have a more robust vetting process, but Uber drivers leave a trail on your phone. When you use the ap, it gives you a picture of your driver. If the driver who shows up doesn't match the picture, you don't get in. If he does match the picture (I think gendered language is OK because it is a male-dominated industry) then at least you have a picture, if not more information. Conversely, a taxi driver can attack you without you already having a paper trail on your phone. In other words, to have the same level of safety in a taxi as you have in a ride-share, you have to take the extra effort to at least take a picture of your taxi driver, if not his taxi license as well. So to all you people who think that Cracked makes a compelling argument here and are afraid of ride-shares, do you always remember to take a picture of your cabby and his cab-drivers license?

    That's one of the reasons, I think people have their different reasons for hating Uber but I think the reason they don't pay their drivers shit is to convince the public that cabs charge too much, if you're only charging less than a buck a mile so you can say cabs charge way too much then the consumer can say, fuck taking a cab, which is what Uber wants but there's not much left for the driver. They want all the benefits of having a cab company with none of the liability.

  • @Blaze8910

    @Blaze8910

    Brian Lucas You're wrong. They don't pay their drivers shit for a simple economics reason. Businesses need customers Ubers customers are drivers and riders but they need drivers first. So, when they come into an area their drivers rates are high or at least reasonable so they can get drivers. Yet once they have drivers they'll soon have more riders than drivers and the riders have no attachment to the drivers so they could care less what the drivers make they just want to get from point a to b. To accomodate all those riders they hire as many drivers as possible. But at no point does Uber ever say they pay you. In fact you pay Uber for being an Uber driver. Thus Uber sets a rate, when the rider pays for the ride you pay Uber for being an Uber Driver, you pay for the upkeep of your car, and you pay for sales tax where applicable. Yet when Uber has more drivers they can lower their rates for their cash cow customers, the riders, but the drivers bills aren't any less but they are effectively getting paid less for the same work.

    +William Lewis I don't think I'm wrong, I think Uber wants to set whatever price they need to so they attract the most customers, if they're not happy with how many rides the cabs ate still getting they're going to lower their prices even further in an attempt to draw in more customers but when there's more demand they'll turn on a dime and start charging more until the demand lowers.

Uber is cheap because it's not regulated and the cab industry is over regulated. most Uber drivers don't even have the right insurance, you're risking more than you realize when you get into a stranger's car.

    Well in my country you have to take 2 driving tests, 1 city knowledge test and 3 psycological tests to even be considered and your car cant be older than 5 years and has to be in line.... Not to mention that you have to have a letter from the government stating that you have no criminal records. You also have to have the proper car insurance and an extra costumer insurance that protects the costumer in case of a crash... so... pretty safe to me

Lyft has the same problems as Uber, but it’s more controlled and concentrated at this point in time because there are less people Part of my decision is anecdotal as well.. There are very few cab drivers who have been arrested for rape compared to the number of claims, but that doesn't change that some exist. The data in the video was represented that Uber has rape claims, and ignored that taxis have the same claims, while still HEAVILY implying taxis are better.

    I can't believe Taxi companies never took proper advantage of smartphone apps. Then again I guess it's a lot less ... homogeneous than uber. Hopefully this is finally going to force taxi companies and the government to innovate at last. I can't see Uber's model being very sustainable though. Riders will love it, sure. But economically it doesn't make much sense for drivers and I'd be interested to see the driver burn-out rate. Long story short, I'm predicting they'll chew through the pool of potential drivers sooner rather than later.

They wouldn't be so bad if their company wasn't run by a greedy, egotistical douchebag bent on taking over the world.

    MarioLoco03 you're just stupid, Uber isn't charging enough to make the cab companies look too expensive. They're not. Uber wouldn't be able to charge these rates if they were the ones that had to provide these rates. They leave that up to their "independent contractors" to undercut the taxicab industry. If their drivers were classified as employees which they actually are, they had to buy, maintain and insure an entire fleet, then their rides might still be cheaper than a cab but at least it would be competitive. The app really has nothing to do with it. It's not hard to offer these low prices when you're not the one who has to provide these low prices. Actually, I have no idea if you're stupid or not, I seriously doubt that you are but you're statement is misinformed.

    It is very different in small cities and towns. In my town with a pop of about 60k, we had one cab company (no medallion system) and they were horrible- the last time I tried to use them I had bought lots of groceries including frozen stuff. My cab arrived 4 and a half hours after 5 calls. The next time I was told that their cabs were booked for the day and left me stranded. I researched some and downloaded the Lyft app and have been using them ever since. Lyft screws its employees too but there's no alternative regular cab company.

    Ridiculous? How much do you think a taxi driver actually takes home after working a 12 hour shift? They are heavily regulated and have to get insanely expensive commercial insurance, pay for maintenance costs, taxes, license fees and more. That's so if there's an accident, your crippled ass will be covered. Uber and Lyft drivers don't carry the same kinds of insurance and definitely don't have money left over to maintain their vehicles. So good luck when brake and tire failures lead to a catastrophic crash and you realize you're stuck holding the bag.

    If a driver's rating creep close to 4.5 out of 5, Uber removes them from the system. With an excess of drivers readily available, Uber exploits their time, effort and resources to siphon funds into their own pockets. Uber is equivalent of a 19th century plantation owner.

  • @dnw009

    @Sarah Nyb Because the most expensive thing for them is the driver since they pay him/her. I don't know about firing 4.5 out of 5. • @chrischris9123

    @chrischris9123

    @Sarah Nyb They're not firing their best drivers. The system is kinda warped. You have to maintain a rating above 4.5/5 stars to remain a driver and/or passenger. After each drive, both people rate each other. Anything less than a 5 star review pulls you closer to a 4.5 and your account may be suspended. It's to keep bad drivers and passengers out of the system, but it's flawed (if you can imagine). I used to be a Lyft and Uber driver.

    As a former Uber driver, Uber steals fares and creates misleading incentives for new drivers. They said I’d get $600 after 100 fares but they deducted my pay so I got about $150 INSTEAD OF $600 AS THE DEVIL BILLIONAIRE PROMISED. Any rider can steal back the fare if they ask for a refund. You make less than $10/ hour and you’re paying for gas etc. They punish you for using the toilet which isn’t even available everywhere and at all hours. You’ll cue up at LAX and wait over an hour with app glitches. They can’t tell you whether or not you passed your LAX test which you MUST HAVE OR FACE $1000 FINE! Their navigation sends drivers literally in circles which makes a tip unlikely. Navigation says “turn left” when it should be right. GARBAGE COMPANY.

    My father's a cab driver, but I still have to say, Taxis are a government monopoly and the sooner it dies out the better everyone is. Those crazy people throwing rocks should just switch out. What attracts people to work for uber and lyft who wouldn't work in a taxi, is that they don't have to buy an expensive license, an expensive new car with an expensive new paintjob and expensive gadgets, and follow stupid rules. That's why most cab drivers work for a boss and a shitty wage. And I suppose what keeps them as taxi drivers is that they commited to those investments and don't want to just throw them away...

The concept of strangers picking up people in random cars doesn't exist in Uber in the UK, possibly even Europe. FWIW, I used Uber for the first time a few weeks ago. The driver had been with a taxi cab company for 4 years before quitting due to racial abuse. He started with Uber, and within 1 week was saying it was great. A higher level of customer, guaranteed payment, easier operation, and less overhead. A win win.

And I can expect the same thing in Tokyo, Sydney, Shanghai, Sao Paolo, Montreal, New York, Mumbai, et cetera.

My experiences with Uber drivers have all been better than with any Taxi cab driver in my lifetime. * Uber has requirements for model and year; they don't just allow any car. * Uber requires proof of car inspection. * I do agree that the rates are crap and an Uber driver is using up his time to trade vehicle equity for cash. However, as long as there are drivers willing to do this, it will be hard to change. All your other arguments are weak.
