For me it's about balance, so if England have Saka and Shaw providing width on either side, then they can have Foden cutting inside and Walker coming in centrally to help out with defence.

Rice, Bellingham and Foden should be the midfield. English people has some weird obsession with disrecditting all of Bellingham`s play as an 8 at Dortmund.

Agree completely that they all need to be in midfield, but I think Trent does too because he's by far our best playmaker. For me there's been a huge a wasted opportunity with Trippier is on the decline and Shaw not playing since February. I would just put Trent as an inverting LB and make the other three defenders ultra defensive. Bellingham does the box-crashing 8 role, Rice covers as a defensive 6, Foden plays as a 10 at all times and Trent comes inside to play that Pirlo-type role. Can form a solid 442 when we're under the cosh as well! I know it won't and probably shouldn't happen since it hasn't been tested at all, but just makes so much sense to me with Trent playing the mirror image of that position at Liverpool and all the other players knowing those roles as well. Stupid not to have even tried it in the pre-tournament friendlies.

Foden behind Kane has no penetration. Kane needs runners. Foden wants to find pockets and play forward. But who does he play forward to in the England team?
