Why toy lines with larger AND smaller characters can be problematic (and how to address this!)

Ойын-сауық

Scott Toy Guru Neitlich from Spector Creative looks into the problems faced by toy companies when trying to adapt properties with characters of different sizes. Why a "deluxe" sku is not always the answer.

That Galactus figure's chest symbol looks like that of a DC Comics' Blue Lantern.

Transformers has been dealing with this issue for the last few lines. A bunch of signifigant characters were from what was the tiny mini vehicles in the original toyline, but weren't that small in the show. So they've been doing them as deluxes, but they are shorter than the others in that price point. And they really haven't been doing much in the way of extra accessories or anything. Some are very well engineered like Cosmos or Gears, but they aren't that different from other figures. Then we've got the Triple Changers, who they've been doing at the leader price point, with accessories to pad them out, with mixed resaults. They need the extra engineering and parts count, because, well they need to be able to turn into three things. But since they want to perserve scale from the show, they aren't that big. Hence the extra accessories. And some work better than others, Astrotrain coming with a bunch of guns that fit into a tender car for his train that can be turned into a launch pad worked for me, Blitzwing's Hulk Hands less so. A lot of people like the rescue cage Sandstorm comes with. Speaking of price for value, I'd kinda like to hear what Scott thinks about Mattel offering a 80$ hot wheels Optimus Prime. What the breakdown on that is would be like.

I'm glad Hasbro finally committed to everyone scaling properly (though, the Beast Wars stuff is their own scale, which the Netflix series just totally ignored), at least in 'bot mode. First, & probably only time, I've felt like getting the full compliment of Seekers (+ an extra, that was 75% off, for Starscream's Coronation gear). The WfC, Legacy & Studio Series 86 figures have been so good, I'm likely to severely cut back on buying TFs, once everyone's been done, probably to favorite characters & amazingly engineered ones. Hopefully, they get the upcoming Combiners right, & SS86 Swoop doesn't take 10 months to find, like Snarl did.

@@remus_lupin I litirally have a review video for Swoop at the top of my KZread feed right now, so I expect to get him by the end of the summer at the latest. Heh, my local Wal-Mart still has two poor Sludges shelf warming. Beast Wars characters always get rescaled when they need to actually appear next to other eras. Just a thing that happens I guess. Yeah line's been cooking. Finally broke down on Jetfire with the latest reissue. Hope we at least get the Armada main cast done before the line's style shifts again.

One Walmart, near-ish me, has a lone Sludge, in a mangled box, that's been there, probably all of 2024, so far. A friend of mine is tempted to try to get them to reduce the price. Never saw Snarl. Had to take a $5 mark up, when I could get an order to go through, for him. Better than the usual +$25 or $50, scalpers want, though.

@@remus_lupin Snarl was on the shelves in the Targets in the area for about a year for me. Grimlock and Slug were blink and miss, and I made the mistake of not getting them on sight. Slug I've gotten via the recent re-issue. I'll wait and see if we get a PR of the original Grimlock colors, until then my Masterpiece fills in. I did preorder Sludge, Snarl and Swoop online to make sure I got them.

I used to display my ToyBiz ML Sentinel with 4" Marvel Superhero Showdown/Marvel Legends Showdown figures. The Sentinel was a 6" "scale" build-a-figure, but I liked the scaling with the 4" figures better.

It's pitiful that copyright claims have gotten to the point where you have to black box the packaging for the toy that you're discussing.

but then that puts the big boxes on an even keel and they don’t want that. What they want is a reason for you and I to go to one, rather than the other. This way you are obligated to pick red or blue, sometimes online, and whilst you are there you will go get your milk, bread, camping gear, whatever, and then they’re going to get more money from you and I. I hope that clears things up.

You missed an opportunity here. Compare and contrast what you said here to what you did on classics. I.E. Adam packed in with Orko and shrinking the giants and how the giants would be made.

So basically kind of like they were made in a "cookie cutter"style.very logical but it would mean no variety .I mean if they had done that does that mean characters like yoda or Chewbacca wouldn't have been made at all or made in very screen inaccurate sizes?I guess I'm saying your idea sounds good on paper and like it would appeal to a corporate executive looking out for costs but it ruins an important life lesson kids need to learn that everybody in the world is different.some are short some are tall some are fat some are thin .we are all different and need to learn this to get along in this world.figures being different sizes show us this.doing them all one size is like trying to create an action figure "master race".just my opinion.

Until recently, Transformers just did a few size classes, & didn't care about how big everyone was supposed to be, in comparison to everyone. You'd get Optimus & Megatron in every size class (granted, they still do), Dinobots as big as Sideswipe, etc. (the smaller 6" Deluxe class). It's not an idea, it's how it is. MotU, Marvel & DC toys tend to all share the same bodies, as much as possible, which forces little variance in size. Thankfully, Hasbro actually committed to properly scaled Transformers, this last go around, which got me to buy more, & even break my no repaints/retools rule. The Dinobots are supposed to tower over Optimus Prime, not come up to the bottom of his chest windows, and they finally do.

I love how scooter makes videos on how toy companies should do this and that but he’s been fired from the same toy companies. He failed at every line he was involved with. Nothing he did made any line he was involved with successful. And no, classics succeeded because of us, the fans. We kept that line going. Buying multiple subs just to keep it afloat. But good try scooter.
