I doubt you'd really say that if you were paying for it! Especially when you consider that your car will probably be slower after spending all that money. Manufacturers these days to go great lengths to design exhaust systems with multiple parallel turbos and twin scroll turbos because splitting the headers prevents pressure waves from stacking and increasing exhaust backpressure which costs you efficiency and power. Besides F1 cars sound good...for F1 racing. On a road car I don't think that high pitched raspy sound is even all that great. Most definitely prefer the more complex sound of a traditional Ferrari V12, or even the brute thunder from a M279.

Thanks for all the compliments, knowing that it comes from one of the best in the business really means a lot to me. The evidence for the firing order is quite hard to find yet. Best I can come up so far is a comparison of the Mustang in the video with the plenty of 8-in-1 symmetrical setups - but it's an apple to oranges comparison, since there all based on different engines. But likewise, there's another project on the back burner, where this could be checked easily. But now I'm really curious on your new project as well... - e-mail sent... ^_^

I have an acoustics background and I had never considered the impact of header design on engine sound. This makes a lot of sense though. Pulses per second is basically Hz or frequency. If you have more pulses coming out of a single pipe (or speaker) per second, you have a higher frequency. Of all the exhaust tones in this video, I loved the GT 350 the most - 10:13. mmmm that low rumble :P The most *interesting* tone was the Honda at 9:32. It is clearly 2 distinct 'notes' (to make a chord!) which makes sense with the 2 header pipes with slightly different path length. My takeaway: people have different opinions of 'best' tone. But this is a fantastic look at how those tonal characters are created!

Excellent journey down the rabbit hole. I've been researching the 8-1 and 12-1 for years. There's another way to run the piping. It's all about the pulses coming out sequentially. A 12-1 v12 at 7000rpm sounds identical to a 12-2 at 14000rpm. You can go 12 into 2 into 1. Or really any combination with sequential pulses going into the collectors 2x 3 into 2 into 1 on each side. then 4 into 2 into 1 with everything for packaging. As long as the various segments remain equal length. In theory there should be no losses if the collector lengths are tuned for the desired torque peak.
@maisteer
Жыл бұрын
12-2 at 14000rpm....? I'm really looking forward to hear that! How come you know so much about it?
@curvs4me
Жыл бұрын
@@maisteer That's the Ferrari F1 sound. It's just the number of equally spaced sequential pulses and the collector. Once it gets into one pipe, as long as it's feeding odd even odd even with equal length pipe it will have the sound. a 6 cylinder into one at 20k rpm sounds identical to a 12 cylinder into one at 10k rpm. I learned it mostly from exhaust development and tuning. Length, size, collector length etc. Those grumbly v12s are tuned for lower rpm peak torque. Sounds like crap at high rpm.
@curvs4me
Жыл бұрын
Take the 6 pipes on one side into 2 by putting all the even pulses into one and all the odd into the other. Now these two can merge together into 1 further down the line. scavenging is the key. Even fires and creates a vacuum in the pipe to pull out the odd pulse and continues repeating. Repeat the exact same thing on the other side. You can tie the remaining two together wherever it's convenient. It will already be odd even odd even because the left and right side are odd and even firing. Does that make sense?
@curvs4me
Жыл бұрын
You can also go back from 1 to 2 after the merge and get the same sound out of both. with further development you could change the length of one side changing pulse timing and doubling the pulse frequency peaking at RPM x.

This is awesome looking foward to the finish project. One question if you have a v6 is best to merge the 6 together at the same time or you can merge 3 and 3, and the using equal length piping merge them together?
@maisteer
Жыл бұрын
First of all is the V6 firing at an even intervall of 120°? Then it seems that 6-in-1's sound better than 6-in-2-in-1, but I would assume, that's also dependent on how long the secondary pipe is. Or to put it like this, how much time the exhaust pulses have time to interact with each other, before they ALL merge together. At the moment it's just an assumption, I will try to find out for you all sometime.

Equal lenght headers is the meaning of life. I've been studying 4-1, 6-1, etc. For years. It all started when I bought equal lenght downpipe for my Skyline, then I noticed that some four cylinder motorcycles sounded a lot better than others, and those have 4-1 instead of 4-2 which just sounds... Bad. F12 Berlinetta has equal lenght headers from factory. Another design study I've had, are headers for the Honda CBX 1000 motorcycle. It has a inline six engine, and there are a few 6-1 equal lenght headers that make it sound mental, while the 6-2 or 3-1 just sounds shit. Interesting topic for sure.
@maisteer

Yeah, I wasn't sure how to include the CBX in the video. To me that's the best sounding production inline six ever. 2nd place goes to the RB26. But maybe I have missed another exotic one..

You're trying to make good content here, but I hardly made it through the first few minutes as you just try too hard to make the video and yourself appear "cool". Your English doesn't help I'm afraid, your mother tongue with subtitles may have been a better choice.

Hi, did not catch if the collector should be with full pipe diameter endings in to the collector or smooth transitions. Also what collector angle is the best for that ecstatic sound? I will make new 3-1 headers for my 6cyl and would like to get the best possible sound. Thank you in advance!

What a fantastic comment. Thank you!
When buying a four or six cylinder car to apply what you've discussed in this video, would one need to keep in mind space in engine bay? As equal length 4-into-1 or 6-into-1 pipework would require a lot of space? How does one choose a car so an exhaust shop has the best chance to actually be able to design and fit the type of exhaust you spoke about in your video?
