Why this Ashes is critical for the future of cricket
Спорт
Guardian sportswriter Jonathan Liew explains why this Ashes is so critical for the sport as Test cricket struggles for audiences and revenue.

England and Australia are not only battling each other, but in many ways they are battling this decline in popularity, with the Ashes existing as a 'window into the sport' for non-traditional fans. Liew also previews the series and examines how England's new aggressive style of play, known as Bazball, will hold up against the reigning champions.

through all my days watching cricket.. Over 3 decades now.. a constant theme has been that test cricket is on its last legs. I am just a bit immune to this talk now.

@silverrahul Exactly. Just compare the number of tests any country apart from Australia, England and India was playing 3 decades ago to now and you'll get your answer. Most series these teams play are only of 2 tests. Zimbabwe, Afg and Ireland play only a couple of tests in an entire year.

Australia 3-2 or 3-1. They have been improving since 2013- 0-3, 2015 - 2-3, 2019 - 2-2. It's about time Australia won the Ashes in England.

If England openers fire, it’s all over for Australia. That’s the only weak spot of England
In the future only 4 countries will play test matches, Australia, England, India and Pakistan. The others don't generate enough money or attendance.
This entire video just appears to be sensationalism and made by someone who has been no interest in the sport but has been forced to make this “report”

Firstly the old vitriol about test cricket dying despite the fact it’s probably the most popular it’s been in years in england case in point the ashes have been sold out for the past year at least. Saying england haven’t performed recently despite being in brilliant form since the appointment of the new coaching staff. This is going to be a close series but you’d think from how he spoke that Australia are unbeatable and england will be lucky to do anything. It’s just sensationalism but then again it’s the guardian what more should be expected.

English media overrating and overhyping the role of Ashes in international cricket as usual. International cricket revolves around India - there is no two ways about it even though that team can't win any silverware in forever. Having said that, this Ashes promises to be a mouthwatering contest

International Cricket peaks on ODI CWC, Ashes and BGT (as India-Pak series no longer happen), so no clear reason why cricket revolves around India. I'd say the Big 3 countries are equally important, India with their supporters, Australia with their records and England with Lord's and their history

Cricket in India revolves around India. Of course India is the biggest market but outside the subcontinent the ashes is still by far the biggest contest - maybe a WC can compete but the ashes is the only thing that would get the average Australian watching cricket outside the regular Aussie summer

Only the Indian dominance and greed could ruin cricket going forward.
Go forth and conquer. Aus 4-0
