Don't forget the Thrunite Archer 2A C. It has a rechargeable battery and can run on AA batteries. Walmart sells Ozark Trail flashlights that take AA batteries, also. If you're afraid of a solar flare , you might be able to find an old Maglite with a Xenon bulb.

I would argue the Fenix is the more "tactical" light because of the momentary on capability (whereas the Nitcore is a reverese clicky) as well as a lower "low" for more covert usage and available randomized strobe. It can used just as simply given the rear switch has only one function (turning the light on and off).

I did too, until I had too many issues with olight to ignore. Their old designs were great, but many of their designs over the last decade have failed. I’ve have both lights and batteries crap out. Have had multiple of their lights melt my pockets and other things by the flaws in their magnetic tail switches. The issues pulse proprietary chargers and batteries made me go back to fenix.

I ditched Olight after I found out there 18650 and 2170 lights will not accept standard batteries. Only Olight brand batteries will work in them. Plus they have 3-4 charging cables that look identical but won’t interoperate. And for that reason, I’m out.

I have and love the Nitecore. It has a good hotspot and throw so lower levels can be used. I edc mine because of using aa batteries as backup. Right now I have been using alkaline for couple weeks and still going strong. I carry lithium aa as backups. One thing not mentioned is it will also run on nimh batteries and I have quite a few. Pair this with edc35 or MH25Pro and you are well covered with lights. Thank you for another fine video.

Any flashlight that is intended for "survival" purposes needs to be able to run on normal batteries. The powerbank in my bugout pack is to charge my phone. With a bunch of batteries for the flashlight you can gauge the use and ration them specifically without worrying they will be suddenly depleted like a powerbank which you want for your phone. Question: do you see any uses for a laser pointer in survival scenarios?

I have a lot of flashlights/chargers/batteries and I will give you a different perspective to consider. Recently, in January 2024, the son of my girlfriend was married. He lives in a two story home up in the hills, the last place any emergency services will go in a disaster. Previously, they had been given inexpensive single AA flashlights for their cars and 4 replacement batteries in a ziplock baggie. I proviided a flashlight for every room in the house, rechargers, rechargeable batteries - AA, AAA and 18650. It cost money. What good does it do a family to have just one, whiz bang flashlight for the whole family in an emergency? Survival is not always a matter of having "the best". Many times, it will be about having something functional that you can grab. What you know about operating a three mode flashlight, the expected life of battery a vs. battery b is completely meaningless when shtf and the person has never operated a flashlight in his or her life. I know the value of a moonlight mode, why you would have a red light at times, and the life expectancy of a functioning 4 battery AA communication unit being used repeatedly. Your 8 year old, your average houswife, or your CPA brother does not. KISS works.

Flood beam which is best for finding things in and around the house/vehicles. cheap. fave for EDC Streamlight 1L-1AA: dual fuel, runs on a CR123 or AA or 14500. Incredible throw, seems way brighter than its lumen rating would suggest. Streamlight dualie 3AA: Indistructable. simple. long run time. I leave these by my doors so they are always there to grab. the flood light is best for lighting a path, but the focused beam is there if you need to spot something.

Sorry, but I’ll keep my Olights. I use, and sometimes abuse, the crap out of my Olights daily!! They hold a charge for a long time, have better spec than most lights, and have held up very well for me, my family members, friends, and coworkers. Using a separate battery bank or solar charger will work for me. Also I have a few that are dual fuel too, 18650 or CR123, and one that uses AA’s.

I’m of the mindset that any flashlight you want to rely on needs to have common replaceable fuel and charging. Why buy into something from Olight when there’s competing products that perform better and don’t use proprietary batteries and charging?

Every rechargeable light uses USB. The mag charge is what I like most about Olight. I also have back up batteries in storage for all of them.

@@frostriver4547 Alright, but why lock yourself into Olight when they offer no advantage? Why purposely buy a less flexible product?

@@roguegeek I never said I was locked in to Olight. I do have Olight products and I believe they are good quality and good value and they work well for me. Do you have any of their lights?

@@frostriver4547 Yes, several throughout the years. Unfortunately, they’ve all been relegated back to their boxes because I’ve just found things that work better for me. Actually, that’s not true. I use their i3T (and now the i3T 2) almost daily. That flashlight is an absolute winner and their best product, IMO.

@@frostriver4547I thought olight was good quality too. Then I had too many of their lights fail. Their batteries crap out, and poorly thought out designs that melt pockets. Their finnicky proprietary charges are obnoxious as well.

Some of the civivi stuff in nitro V is pretty good and sub-$100. It depends what you mean by hard use though. The knife steel itself is tough, but the ceramic bearing construction is said to be less tough than washer construction.

Sorry, but having CR123 primaries on hand is not that hard. You can buy them in bulk, and I will use those over an alkaline or NiMh battery any day of the week. And that is just for the prepper part. Dual fuel lights that take CR123s are head and shoulders above anything that takes AA or AAA batteries. And you don't have to worry about battery leakage.
