I have to agree with Thomas Sowell. The first time I voted was for George McGovern and the only reason was that all my friends encouraged me to vote for him. The herd mentality. The 2nd time, I was in my late 30s. I've always had an interest in politics since returning from the war in South Vietnam but still didn't know enough about the issues or I didn't like the politicians that were running. I would also add a requirement for each voter. A test in our constitution/rights and our history.
In Sweden we have a minister in the government that is like 25 years old, possibly even less (and completly incomptent environmentalist migrant girl, and they are very well paid to, their salary).

Wise words from a great man. Under the articles of confederation, and (I believe) even later under the Constitution, to be a voter, one had to own property. The type and value of property differed by state, but the effect was the same as Thomas Sowell advises. Only persons who had "a dog in the fight, i.e. investment", who had demonstrated an ability to be successful, were voters.

I was 30 years old when I finally figured out I was just voting as a party hack.

Like Joseph in the Bible, he alone qualifies to be president for understanding the job demands perfectly.
One change I would like to see is not leaving the office of President to the vote of the people. It has turned into a ridiculous popularity contest and the most popular is NOT usually the best leader. I think the people should only vote for Representatives and Senators of their own states and let the President be left to the voting of the combined Congress. ....it's just my opinion...please don't kill me for it.
