    If Marvel ever makes a film or miniseries about Stan Lee’s life, as they probably will, then I think his fallouts with Jack Kirby and other creative partners like Steve Ditko provide a lot of dramatic potential similar to The Social Network. Pay tribute to Stan’s legacy while still shedding light on the other creatives who he couldn’t have done it without.

  • @darthbane5676
    @darthbane5676 Жыл бұрын

    I like to think that Stan and Jack were in the same room coming up with ideas together, such as a character who comes across less as a typical comic book alien and more as a religious figure, or a character who can directly speak on behalf of the authors while existing within the story, and those ideas ultimately came together to form the Silver Surfer as we know him today. Of course, that would imply that neither fully appreciated the other’s contribution, and both tried to take all the credit. But I think Jack’s powerful imagery is just as important as Stan’s philosophical dialogue. Sadly, it’s not easy to accept that a single phenomenal character could have been originally created by two talented people who have different visions and don’t always get along.

    At his best, the Surfer is a cowboy; chasing a stagnant sunset that both goes on forever and never goes anywhere. Norrin Radd has an itch to find new frontiers and a code to keep himself in check that are at constant odds and prevent him from settling down anywhere. This character is high-concept sci-fi at its best and far too cerebral for Marvel Studios to ever accurately capture.

    It wouldn't work as the execs want. Surfer is a taste of not a whole meal. They'll want so many "epic" battles. When really he's just showing up to "worthy" planets right before their end. It'll be closer to a Carl Sagan doc than a Marvel movie

    Silver Surfer is such an underrated character when it comes to being adapted into other media. The 90s animated series & the F4 sequel may not have been well received, but they both pretty much nailed the character of Norrin Radd perfectly. If the Surfer ever does appear in the MCU (probably by the end of Phase Five's Secret Wars), it will pretty much take the fandom by storm.

    I've liked the Silver Surfer for years. I love how he questions his place in the universe, and why the beings around him, act the way they do. I admit to wondering why I'm here, from time to time.I think a lot of people have. Remember the animated series he had in the late 90's? It captures him perfectly! It was even done in Jack Kirby's art style! I know I'm going to get a lot of flack, but I liked it more than X-Men:TAS! It was a shame it ended on a cliffhanger!

I even have a couple issues of Silver Surfer framed on my wall. Silver Surfer has been my favorite superhero since I found Silver Surfer Requiem in my high school library back in 2008. (In Thy Name is another favorite). I was once told by a friend "who your top 3 heroes are says a lot about you", and I think that's one reason why seeing others appreciate him just as much as I do brings me joy. If more people admired him and aimed to embody who the Silver Surfer is, even if they fell short, because even Norrin does, the world would be a better place. I love how much care and thought you put into wanting to give him a proper video. (I must agree that Stan's runs felt like a lot of empty words. They were too grandiose. Just about everyone else has written Silver Surfer with more weight.)

    Regardless of who deserves more credit, I will say that Marvel characters have always resonated with me in ways others never did. Superman is a god among men, and he's indestructible, infallible, perfect, always right. But Marvel heroes felt like real people with real problems. They struggled, they overcame not just through brute strength, but through being clever and smart. I was more interested in heroes like Spider-Man and Daredevil, who were super, but also so deeply human. Though I did also always love the Silver Surfer. He was powerful, and invincible, and god-like, but he was also internally conflicted, trying to gain understanding about himself, his place in the universe, and life. For whatever reason the Surfer resonated with me in ways other god-like heroes never did.

    I think a silver surfer special presentation for silver surfer based on one of his first comic runs would work well. You have a lone surfer who has had his memory taken from him by galactus floating through an empty universe. He carries out his duties helping hat away unpopulated planets until he is hit by a solar storm that starts visions of a woman he’s never seen. He awakes confused and goes to galactus to find answers to his visions but the conversation amounts to nothing and the surfer is sent on to another planet, alone and isolated again. It is on this planet that he begins preparations for galactus until he is confronted by a tree like people. He is on Planet X (groots homeworld) many years before the mcu began. He is unable to communicate effectively with this race but begins to learn about life again and what it means to be kind. The film would end with him confronting galactus and regaining some of his memories but galactus will end up destroying Planet X but not before that give a sapling to the surfer and ask him to carry it to safety and continue their race. This action reminds rad of his original sacrifice and gives him new purpose. He eventually returns to his home planet to see that it is long gone. Galactus shows up and it is revealed that the flashbacks the surfer has been seeing were many many centuries ago and that his family and planet are long gone. The surfer realises that if he does not serve galactus that the destruction of planets will still continue so decides to act as his herald again to ensure that no more planets hosting sentient life are destroyed again.

    Thanks for the video. When I first saw the cartoon series about the Silver Surfer I was intrigued. How do you write a story of a being who has cosmological level of powers? How do make someone who can almost do anything interesting and compelling?

    Thank you for mentioning the creative disputes between Stan & Jack. To say Stan did more than Jack is a disservice to Stan. On the other hand, if you say it was all Jack, youre discrediting Stan. The line is muddled, both deserve recognition. Stan just also happened to be the face of the company.

    I love the Silver Surfer original series and I agree with Stan the writing does matter. I always preferred John Bucema’s art over Kirby’s when it came to drawling the Silver Surfer.

    People like Stan Lee, Thomas Edison, etc. were very creative but I see those name more as a "brand" placed on the work of others rather than the lone super genius creators the pop-history tells us.

    Silver Surfer and Spider-Man were always Stan’s favorite character due to their characterization, despite the existence of Hyperion,Sentry and Gladiator, to me Surfer was Marvel’s answer to Superman in that despite all the power he Carries, his conflicts are still intense and intriguing!

    Silver Surfer is more Dr. Manhattan analogue than Superman. Personally, Hyperion should not be a hero name, Sentry is kind of there, and Gladiator is more like a slimmed-down Mongul than Superman.

    The Silver Surfer SHOULD have been introduced in Thor Love and Thunder or at least Beta Ray Bill should have been in that disappointing movie. Guardians Vol. 3 is a good slot to place the Herald of Galactus
