Why the Michael Jackson hologram isn't actually a hologram

Ғылым және технология

Michael Jackson's "performance" as a hologram at last night's Billboard Music Awards caused mixed reactions - and for good reason. But while this might look like the future of posthumous performances, the technique itself is about five centuries old.

The video already gave you key words to search and told you the name of the effect... but there are two basic ways of doing it... direct projection or reflection... both have to do with a gauze-link screen material stretched across the area where you want the projection to appear

The issue is not the holographic technique - the 3D image is a volumetric image (a type of hologram). It's the rendition. If you record someone from all angles, it will hold the uncanny valley effect back than if you try to recreate them using 3D software. The trick itself is not expensive... The animation - if they used an impersonator - using mocap and other techniques.... That's the expensive part.

No, it's an impersonator. The Estate won't admit it but the moves match that done by Earnest Valentino. Look up "Earnest Valentino Dance". They could have opted for tracking MJ's motions from video footage (like people have done for Miku Miku Dance), and the impersonator in the Michael Jackson Experience game did a better job than this.

I don't think it's an impersonator, at times the animation seems to have faults, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a pre-rendered projection , but it could very well be pepper's ghost. The sad thing is *so* many people see projections and instantly think "Hologram" or "pepper's ghost"... like at Hatsune Miku's concerts, which don't use pepper's ghost, just overlapping projectors

  • @windowlessroom6178

@@andreww9726 From an A/V engineer Saying "overlapping projectors" is a bit inaccurate. The way official Vocaloid concerts are produced involves the use of a material known as a DILAD Screen which bends the light to the viewer's eye. (when I set up this effect I prefer a different screen that scatters the light rather than bending it). My point is there is still a screen.

@@andreww9726 it was an impersonator with MJ's face CGI'd over projected as a pepper's ghost. I can't find it now but on Instagram around that time there was a video taken by someone near the front row showing the flaws with the illusion - basically the whole projection was just on one sheet with a reflection of the whole projection along the ceiling. The only live dancers were those off the stage.

Ya i know its a impersinator but the thing here is that the person is there is a hologram of mj's face it was taken as a picture and they made it to a hologram and connects it into the guys face then this person while the hologram is placed on the person this person became the hologram its not this mirror thing its a hologram you think its a hologram because the company that made tupacs hologram is not the same as the other company who made mj's performance

well he didnt cover anything in any detail. We dont expect holograms to look like Star Wars. Star War holograms sucked. They were an animation of what someone though a hologram should be. WE'll see this technology go much further as plasma science and laser science unite and develop more.

I think at the end of the day it doesn't matter a damn WHAT any of us think about it because it is out there now and it's going to become more common. There was a movie made in 2002 starring Al Pacino called, "Simone" which deals with this very subject. Pacino plays Victor Taransky, a movie producer who is sick of dealing with spoiled actresses's and having to cow tow to their every whim. Mainly a character played by Winona Ryder. He has film ideas but no one seems to appreciate or see his vision. Then a crazy genius named Hank comes up with a solution, namely a digitized actress named Simone. Hank dies but leaves his creation and new found technology to Taransky. What follows is an interesting plot. Especially when Taransky decides he is tired of riding on the coat tails of a performer who doesn't even really exist so he sets out to destroy her career by making a horrible movie titled, "I Am Pig". But to his amazement Simone has taken on a life of her own and people STILL love her, no matter what she does. Personally, I think the idea of music concerts is sort of cool. I can't imagine paying regular concert ticket prices to see a hologram but if the price were right, it would be fun and interesting to see John Lennon or Kurt Cobain or Janis Joplin "live" on stage again.

If you’re a theatre kid/theme park fan this is the most outdated tech ever lmao. Pepper’s ghost often appears flat or weird when it’s projections and not animatronics, not to mention seeing reflections on the glass that break the illusion.
