@@jas-lousostand7212 As someone who will be studying a vet nursing degree course, i can confirm that vet nurses train for 3-4 years (depending on the course). However, you are correct in saying that studying to be a vet is 7 years, but can take longer depending on the course. I, too, am upset that my dream job - as daft as that sounds - is classed as "low skilled". However, as that woman said in the clip, you just have to do the job at hand and be grateful for it, making sure that the care you give to your patients is the best to your ability and that you provide the service that is required of you - even if you aren't recognised for it in your salary. (All of the info above is based off figures from the UK's RCVS - i may not be 100% correct as i do not proclaim to know everything!)

@Internet Hardcase He makes you think from a different presepective. You dont have to agree with all of his points of course, this is a tv show and he is on a time limit about how deep he can speak on a topic. But take this for example, Most people when they heard the new policy were cheering 'no rubbish immigrants' and 'oh the government did something good' and so on. But those people didnt nesscerarily check or think about what exactly would be considered low skill jobs as shown in the video. I cant speak for everything but Russel does have a way of at least opening the conversation beyond initial reactions and one sided narrative.

Those so called “low skilled workers” have now been named “key workers” and essential. Most of the country hopefully knew this without having to be told by the government. This government who for the last decade have tried their hardest to bring the NHS to its knees and disregard and deny basic privileges such as a decent wage or free parking to staff and are now telling us how vital and important a strong NHS is in this time of crisis. I hope that the country will now truly realise the amazing work that NHS, carers and other emergency staff do for us every single day and after this current crisis is over i hope we all continue to support them all and put some serious pressure on the government to not revert to type and for once and actually do something good for this country and properly support them financially and give them genuine respect

I don’t really have the right to say anything here (as I was born in England), but my family are all immigrants from Spain. My Nan couldn’t speak English, so she taught herself to the best of her ability. She worked as a chef in a hotel to earn enough money to bring her children over. They spoke Spanish as their first language and got an education, having fluent English as a second language. My mum works as a surgeon in the NHS, My uncle an accountant. My cousin is a marine biologist and I’m working hard to get a degree in forensics. I think all this shit that immigrants are lazy is for the majority, bullcrap. Sure there may be some like that, but surely that’s the minority? Thanks for reading this ramble! :D

@@xiaolongbao I don't believe that immigration is bad, I believe that too much of it is bad and the UK is definitely an example of that with the rates sky-rocketing since 1994. It causes segregated communities of different cultures as we have seen in many parts of the UK. Places like London which is now 44.7% white British, Luton which is less than 50% white British since 2011, Leicester less than 50% white British, Slough less than 50%. Now, my point isn't in founded in the skin colour but the massive difference in cultures in these places. Cultures so vastly different that we as a nation need to start watering down exactly what our idea of British culture and values are in order to cater for others. As short as thirty years ago people would of told you quite clearly what they believed British culture was; The monarchy, houses of parliament, judge by jury, high courts, the church of England. Now people simply seem clueless when questioned on our heritage and what exactly British culture is because we've tried to mix with such a variety of people in such a short amount of time that it has failed. All major members of government whether conservative or labour agree that is the rate over the last thirty years has been a catastrophe. Something that is often surprising to people is the fact that fourth and third generation immigrants have seen this evolve and they themselves agree as they see Britain lose its identity. Secondly, people argue in favour of immigration as an economic argument filling in the lower skill job roles. This is seriously one of the most racist and xenophobic arguments you can possibly hear, the idea that there are jobs that British people simply shouldn't do or shouldn't be required to do because 'Migrants will fill in the gaps' is absolutely ludicrous. Not to mention that employers exploit this heinously considering these roles are sort after by so many people, making migrants easily disposable whilst also working at such a low income.

@Mike Jones That's what happens when you disable low income people from getting an education or training required for a decent job. The problem isn't immigrants taking the jobs, it's the govt's for failing to make new ones. When you have an economic downturn you don't cut spending in a (failed) effort to decrease the deficit, you invest into things that will boost GDP such as transport, education and business/tech grants that will encourage growth so that you get more tax money in. The Tories simply don't understand how the economy works and yet they tout themselves as the saviours when it comes to money troubles. They have a private education, that doesn't mean it teaches them anything.

  • @sypher3986

Mike Jones By using self service over a till, are you not in fact hurting this country’s economy? By using a till, you may think that you are helping people to ‘stay employed’ , but do you not think that you could be depleting the amount of jobs for those who designed, created, marketed, sold and installed the self-service checkouts. By using the tills rather than self-service , are you not encouraging for these undoubtedly lower skilled jobs at a till to be favoured over the higher skilled jobs (that require more brain power and commitment)? Is this not encouraging a shift against the current movement of jobs? I ask this as currently, in the UK, we are advancing in the technologies - and with it jobs - that are used within our country, resulting in a shift in jobs from those in service, towards those that require higher skill such as manufacturing and those involving engineering, media, technology etc. By encouraging people to have jobs in the service sector - such as a person working at a till - you are going against the current trend, and therefore assisting to help this country become less developed; which I am sure you can agree is not a good thing. Moreover, by favouring these lower skilled jobs at a till, you are not setting a good example for those in the younger generation. Are you not encouraging children to dream to become till workers rather than computer scientists or engineers?

And besides, even if you were correct - how many of those retail workers do you think have the technical skills for developing, making or installing those machines? And how many do you think would be able to get those jobs? I'll answer for you - very few of them, and not many. Your idea would cause mass unemployment, and essentially shut out a lot of people from any form of employment at all.

@@sykessaul123 There is one thing you are failing to take into account. During an economic downturn where is the money to invest supposed to come from? I'm not entirely sure you understand economics either. If your borrowing money to invest in infrastructure then your not actually improving the economy because that money still has to be paid back plus the interest on the debt. Maybe the tories haven't actually reduced the defecit but at least they haven't added to it through reckless borrowing like under successive labour governments.

  • @sykessaul123

    @sykessaul123

    4 жыл бұрын

@@rosshughes1628 You either borrow it or take it from those who can afford it. Like with Corbyn's proposed a 5% increase for those with £80k+, a 10% increase for those between £125k and £150k and a 5% increase for those £150k+. Realistically that amount isn't going to change much about how those people live but it raises enough money to drastically change the landscape of our country by investing in the things that I listed. And you are improving the economy because that infrastructure increases GDP by raising efficiency and decreasing unemployment. You make gains on what you invest and if you invest wisely then you end up making a lot of money, hence why trading stocks (investing) is one of the quickest ways to make a fuckload of money. The same principles hold on a national level too, you invest your money into successful enterprises and you get a return on that. I agree that New Labour's borrowing was idiotic but mainly because it was spent on things like wars in the Middle East which as we well know are basically just a blackhole for funding. If that money had been spent on small business grants, new technologies, transport infrastructure(in the North there's still 40 year old trains being used), renewable technologies and revitalising Britain's core industries then we wouldn't be having this conversation. If you still doubt me about investing in a downturn then have a look at China and how they invest in public transport when their economy takes a dip, there's a reason they're 2nd biggest economy in the world with double the economic growth of the US and nearly 5x the economic growth of the UK, not saying their investing the sole reason but it's part of it.

I didn’t realise so many nurses used to be referred to as ‘low skilled’. My mums been a nurse for almost 40 years, and I know at times some of her nursing jobs would have been considered ‘low skilled’ (she’s done many fields of nursing). I know that in her last job she was probably considered ‘low skilled’ but she had to help a lot of older people, trying to keep them alive, if they didn’t answer phones or house calls or fell off the radar, she’d have to track these people down. It’s insulting to be called low skilled. She semi retired recently, working shorter hours now and installs pacemakers mostly, and for almost 40 years in the NHS, she’s gets 2 coupons for a couple hundred quid. As a care worker myself it's fucking hard. I work 24 hr shifts straight and then sometimes end up going back out on shift the next day again. I've seen myself working multiple days at a time. I'm entitled to an 11 legal hour split between shifts but I choose to work these shifts, mostly because I love my job and the pay is so shit it's what I need to do to get by. We don't get paid breaks we work non stop. So I can't stand the government telling me I'm unskilled when i have to be trained to defend myself from challenging behaviour whenever I walk into a shift, I have to be trained in positive behaviour support and carry a level of counselling skills in my job. I have to be trained in epilepsy, manual handling for moving people and using hoist equipment, medication administration, I have to pay to be regulated by codes of practice, pvg checked. I'm trained in dementia, autism and the government are telling me I'm unskilled. I'll tell you what the staff turn over in community care is huge because people can't cope with it. Get Boris to do a week in my job and he'll see how lucky he and the rest of his MP's are. How can you call the people like me looking after people with disabilities unskilled workers. Until you experience what it is actually like having to care for every aspect of someones life, feeding, using the toilet, personal care, mental health, disability, deterioration too, then you do not have an idea. My wages get cut for doing nights because they get away with calling them 'sleepovers' yet when I leave the next morning after having no damn sleep I wonder who the fuck is making these decisions about my job. And it's folk like boris who have never seen a day in my life as a carer. Being mentally drained is probably harder than being physically drained. Imagine being both everyday of your life but loving your job enough to keep going, not for the pay, but for the enjoyment of caring for all these wonderful people who need our help. Thanks for what you said Russel.

I have to point out something to you in hope you are less offended by this point-system. It's only doctorate and above which earns extra "highly skilled" points, having a degree, masters, NVQ, diploma, apprenticeship or A-level makes you a skilled worker. My grandparents were recently being helped by carers and it is greatly appreciated, even for someone to be there to talk to half the time, never mind all the assistance.

I get what you're saying 'that's the current system' but as I said it's BS lol. Carer is a blanket term, carer could mean someone like the people who help your grandparents, home help kind of thing. There's carers that work specifically with substance abuse, mental health issues. My work is quite broad as I work for disabilities right across the spectrum of physical/mental capacity. So I have to be qualified as I am responsible for the care of vulnerable adults and children. I didnt walk into my job without points haha but again, I can appreciate your point, I just dknt agree with what qualifies as 'skilled' when people packing shelves in supermarkets get paid more than I do.

A lot of actors have to work for free because if they don't they'll always be someone else who will. Sure there might be less people fighting for the same jobs but there will still be a lot

I lived and taught in the UK for 2 years and had 2 different schools try to sponsor me, including applying an extra allowance to make sure I was over the salary minimum and I till did not get enough points/ had the minimum but others had more. In order to qualify for this points system a company had to pay to have a sponsorship license and another fee for each certificate application/ employee before the points are even applied, some companies cant/wont be able to afford that fee. Also the process takes a minimum of 3 months to complete.

All my respect goes to them. 💕

I don’t see that big a problem with a points based system. I think the poorest people in the UK should be encouraged to have a better chance at getting a job rather than creating a large migrant workforce to compete against. I think the details of the immigration system need to be ironed out possibly but I think giving Brits the first chance to get work in their own country is important. The later if there becomes a shortage of workers in a given field lower restrictions for those jobs. Britain was surviving pretty well before mass immigration policies were implemented, I don’t think this is going to spell doom for the nation like some fear-mongering people would like to believe

I don't see the issue. I live in New Zealand (British) and had to meet all sorts of criteria to get a work visa including a points threshold, everyone has to meet a points threshold to qualify as skilled, I don't think its a bad system. I do agree that some jobs that are considered unskilled are wrong but its not perfect anywhere I guess. theres a skills list here and each job has its own skill level. I do think people moving to England should be able to speak english, its not unreasonable.

Don' you think the "skill" element should be case-by-case or some sort of examination to determine your skillset? This point system is lazy as hell and by its own premise they should deport the british citizens working those jobs because they're low skilled so who needs them? Edit: I also think people can move to UK without speaking english at first, but they should have a limited time to learn the language. Say they have a year and if they don't know the language on a basic level then they're out.

@@littlekettle5759 Yep, I agree. it definitely should be a case by case basis but I don't know if that is viable. no system is perfect. I genuinely sympathise with people being shafted over this, I've been in New Zealand for 5.5 years and still trying to get residency. they keep changing the rules and lots of people are being done over.

Well if there is a gap in the market, why would they offer more ? There might be more aplicants but why would they pay more ? You either take the job or somebody else will. Plus where would you get the extra money to pay more ? So its you who didnt think this through mate

Crom who are you going to get to actually fill the gap though?! If they cut out the immigrants they don’t have the capacity within the uk population to meet the targets, the uk government has failed miserably to meet the recruitment targets for teachers for the last 6 years and if you go in a hospital how many of the staff are actually made up of immigrants?
