You may be surprised to hear this but the USA isn't like European countries where there are many parties with different ideologies, some of which are actually progressive or are in service to workers. The choice of party in the US is Right and Center-Right, no matter how hard the Democratic party tries to pretend it's progressive it is ultimately spineless and has no real intention of doing anything that would go against corporate lobbyists (that includes the NRA).

You know what's really fucking funny? Doctors, paramedics, and other emergency aid workers have a professional duty to provide aid in public even when they aren't working (duty to act). If it was later discovered that they had ignored an emergency situation for no adequate reason, they could be fired or even possibly tried for criminal negligence. So apparently, a paramedic on vacation is more obligated to help you than a cop on duty.

I was hit on my way to school and one of the witnesses was a fire-fighter paramedic on his way to work and he immediately stopped traffic, placed a call, helped me out of the street, calmed the frantic driver down and professionally took charge single handedly. He dealt with the police (who I found out later dealing with them on your own at 17 is a bitch and they almost never take you seriously no matter how polite and clear you are) and gave a witness account they couldn't argue with. Bam. Done.

Not the case. I was an organizer with and spokesperson for the Ottawa Panhandlers' Union. One of our members, Cactus (real name Stephen Beriault -- look it up), a squeegee street kid, was sleeping under a pedestrian underpass when some bar-hopper took a piss near his head. Cactus jumped up and took a swing at the guy with his squeegee. The guy pulled out a knife and stabbed Cactus in the heart. When paramedics came, they stood at the top of the pedestrian underpass and watched Cactus bleed out while his friends begged them to come and help. Why? Because there were street kids down there and they didn't feel safe. So they "staged" and watched Cactus die. (The guy who stabbed Cactus was later found not guilty in court because a judge felt it was perfectly reasonable to feel your life is in danger because homeless person. It's legal to stab a homeless person to death because homeless people are scary.)

Sounds typical of the US. When I was there a friend of mine tripped and injured a knee in a university. A small crowd gathered around and a university security person came up. The security person came along, asked if my friend needed to be taken to the hospital and brought along a form to be signed that the university offered aid and will not be held liable for the incident in the future.

Off-Duty NYPD Detective Marcelo Razzo also took credit for saving the day when in reality he didn't do anything to help. Margaret Chan was the Judge who decided to throw out Lozito's case and stated that "The Law Does Not Allow Him [Lozito] to Claim the Cops Failed to Protect Him from Lunatic Killer" As shitty as this story may seem, this would never slide in today's world. Cops are getting held accountable for there actions now more than ever before in history. And with the rise of Social Media and Smart Phones, something like this would be recorded by dozens of people and get posted online for millions to see.

Unfortunately the situation would likely be the same. Especially if the cops got a halfway decent lawyer who could cite the legal precedent both this case and that other one present, that basically indicates "the police aren't required to take action" or if their lawyer can argue that it would be an "unnecessary risk". Legally speaking, the courts don't care about common sense, particularly if there's precedent they can default to instead of having to make the call themselves.

But if you were to work in public safety you would see, you get exposed to so many situations, day after day, it is very hard to always get it right. In the case of this video I don’t believe most of the cops I worked with would have handled it this way. Being in threatening situations takes its toll on you. I did become more fearful over time. I will also tell you this. The police response in Uvalda is being heavily scrutinized to take attention away from this country’s deplorable gun laws. If it was simply police response that caused additional killing there than what is the explanation for Orlando, Sandy Hook, Buffalo, Denver or any of the other terrible events of gun violence?Don’t be distracted by the police action in Uvalda. The horror will stop when we quit allowing these weapons to be so easily available. That is the real issue.Imagine how you would feel if everytime you had an interaction with someone in public there was a great risk of someone pulling a gun and blowing your brains out. Don’t you have loved ones you want to go home to? It takes its toll, Tia, it takes its toll.

@@nikispanikinah, the issue is policing. From the fact that it arose here from patrols to catch runaway slaves, to the fact that far right fascist groups very openly infested law enforcement so they can weaponise state violence upon those they hate, to shit like this story. We know for things like wellness and mental health, there are other, better options than police, who have unnecessarily slaughtered many innocent people and dogs for having mental health issues or disabilities, filming then to hold them to account, or the heinous crime of daring to hold literally anything or nothing at all in their hand whilst having melanin. They are not legally obliged to protect or serve, to stop crimes they see or save civilians' lives. They exist to be the arm of state violence, and to protect capital and the status quo. Yeet that shit and build something effective, new, and equitable. Just reforming or building on top of our current system will keep the poisonous root system intact and will always replicate similar results. To be anti-gun in America I find to be rather privileged. Far right extremism has been a massive problem. We have a whole ass state with anti-trans laws and policies Holocaust survivors have described as genocidal. Fact of the matter is, an armed minority community is a much harder to oppress and kill minority community. I'd rather a black man or trans woman shoot another human or a cop, than with no resistance just capitulate and die to a violent bigot (who, given the intersections of violence and bigotry, is actually decently likely to be a cop). Maybe we can readdress guns when we've gotten to the point where we have those effective alternatives to police and one of our two major parties doesn't have literal Nazi rallies thrown in unironic support going on. Until then, arm minorities

For those wondering how can cops get way with "No direct promises of protection" despite their motto being literally "To protect and to serve", they have a nice if dirty little loophole. The loophole is thus: They have no particular obligation to protect specfiically *YOU* Their "Duty" is to protect "The City"; or "The People" or "Society" or whatever other vague ambiguous term you want to use. But they apparently, have no legal obligation to protect any particular individual. We just think they do because of the movies, but a cop can actually witness you getting raped, shot, and cannibalized and not do a damn thing and get away with it.

@@bluntcabbage6042 Sorry, I just realized now you wrote me, so I'll respond a bit too late :) Well, that the healthcare sucks in the US is not a new information - you guys (I don't know if you are a US American, but I'll just assume you are) need to pay for everything , even a ride with an ambulance costs when you're lucky several hundred dollars. Surgical operations in the US vary from 3000 to 9000 $ and as far as I know mostly has the private person to pay for themselve. People who need insuline because of diabetes (one package) have to pay up to 500$ for it. Oh, and here is an article regarding the health care of the US: www.google.de/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/mar/13/us-healthcare-costs-causes-drug-prices-salaries So far to the healthcare. Let's go to the police and to the reasons why I said they sucked, not based on this video. I have a little number for you. 2017 the police shot 987 people. As a little comparison: in the same year the police in Germany shot 14 people. Even though the USA has a around three times bigger population, that would be 42 people every year. (978 people killed by the police is btw more than the doubled amount of all people killed in all crimes in Germany in 2017 (405 people)) So the police doesn't just seem to have a problem with shooting a lot of people, but also seem to have a racist problem. www.vox.com/cards/police-brutality-shootings-us/us-police-racism www.snopes.com/fact-check/do-police-kill-more-whites-than-black-people/ While black people are not killes as much as white people seen in comparison with the percentage of ethnic groups in the US, black people are three times as likely to be shot than caucasians. True, that the judicial sucks I mostly based on this video though this alone shows how unfair it can be towards victims like this man against a powerful institution like the police force. Hope you have a good day :)

When I cam to my face and head felt like it had warm water running down it. I didn't realize how much I was covered in blood. People gathered and I legit felt fine could walk around, but people gathered around and some of the women started screaming with their hands over their mouths when looking at me that they made me panic and fearful that I got disfigured or something.

It's actually worse than that. There was a second case that set more of a precedent. Some guys broke into a woman's home and raped her. Her female neighbour heard it and called the police. The police came, knocked on the door and just left! The rapers got suspicious and found the other woman and raped/brutalised the two women for a day before leaving. But the police don't owe you anything so the court just told her to go fuck herself. It's apparently only if the police actually speaks to you and tells you it's going to help you that it's obligated.

I was attacked by 8 guys with bricks. They ran off then the police arrived. I asked "where the fuck were you guys" They told me to stop swearing or I'll be arrested. I was a mess.

John Smith someone had called the police 30 minutes earlier. The police only appeared after these guys had left. They were fully aware what was happening. They didn't try to intervene, or even try to locate the guys that did it. Even the people in the area were disgusted at them.

i remember some punk cop was at our school letting kids try to stab his vest with pencils in the 6th grade and my friend came beside him and went for where the vest dips at the arm pit. he was slamming my friend into the cement pole and trying to break his arm when the yard duty pancho got involved and almost got arrested for telling the cop to get off the property before he gets his jaw broken. it was a nice day and went super bad fast. rip adrian.
