Why the Assassin's Creed Movie Isn't Really An Assassin's Creed Movie

Ойын-сауық

Assassin's Creed is hand down one of the more popular game franchises of the last 2 decades. With an expansive world, deep lore, and tons of action, Assassin's Creed seemed like a no brainer for a big screen adaptation. But the Michael Fassbender Assassin's Creed film was far from the adaptation fans wanted. Why did Ubisoft think this was the route fans wanted for an Assassins Creed movie?

Having ambition is all it takes to make a videogame adaptation work That's why most videogame adaptations in the past failed, because the studio hired people that didn't understand videogames or filmmaking That's why recent adaptations like "Sonic The Hedgehog", "Dungeons and Dragons", "The Last of Us" and "Arcane" worked, because the people behind it understood the games and the media

Interviews I've read leading up to the movie's release gave the impression that Justin Kurzel and Michael Fassbender wanted to make two different films. Kurzel wanted to make a film that dealt with the dangers of fanaticism, hence why the Assassins aren't portrayed as too heroic and the Templars, specifically Sophia, aren't too villainous. Fassbender on the other hand wanted to make a film that asked if it's our DNA and genetics that determined who we are or if it is our choices. Not bad ideas, they could even be in an Assassin's Creed game, but it felt like they didn't want to do Assassin's Creed. Maybe they should've instead done an original film instead of using an existing IP. Awesome score though, the only thing that felt Assassin's Creed about it.

Definitely agree that these themes deserved separate movies, but potentially could've been in the AC universe. The former morally-grey story sounds like Edward Kenway's (& set completely in the past) while the latter does seem similar to the original main-characters whole arc in the present/future.

But it seems that even the AC game franchise is starting to lose its way

Having an original story that is technically a side story to the games isn't a bad idea, the AC universe is big enough for that kind of story. You just need good writers and less studio interference. What would have been a more interesting story is the the main character willing and eager to help Abstergo because of their lies. Not about bringing piece and order, something more simple, just archeology and history, trying to find a lost artifact. Then, through reliving history and stumbling upon weird happenstance would our hero find out Abstergo is the baddies. Action in the past, mystery thriller in the present.

I always remember wishing that they had just trusted the audience to make the whole film and marketing look like a period fantasy piece. And then like 95% towards the end, wake up in the real world as a twist, almost like Steve Roger's running out into modern day. My understanding was the choice to go more heavy on modern scenes was it seemed less risky. But appeal to the audience the same way they appealed to the original players. I saw stories that when the Winter Soldier twist is revealed, people legit gasped, because the comic readers made such a small percent of the overall audience. AC fell into the common pitfall of "let's make a video game movie" instead of "let's make a movie based or inspired by this property that happens to be a game"

This is honestly one of my favorite movies, and one of the ones I honestly most want to see a sequel for (even though I know it isn't going to happen) yes there a lot of modern stuff but honestly I enjoy it, the movie is largely about Cal's introduction to the world of the Assassins and Templars, and this in my opinion is done well. is it perfect? no but I think it was exactly what it was meant to be, the beginning of the story. Why does he go along with helping them with the animus? Well not only is he literally forced to the first two times, but the entire movie he is being told by both sides that they are the good guys, and that they have the real good intentions. Its understandable too for Cal to be more easily swayed by the Templars as he naturally distrusts the Assassins who he believes murdered his mother. I disagree that "They killed the main villain." as I think (besides the Templars in general being the villains) its the Doctors daughter who (Had this received further movies) been the one to become the true main villain of the series, which we see set up in the end of the movie. And to the point that the movie has no climax, you literally show it off in the video, it is the termination of the compound, Cal truly becoming an Assassin and understanding and then the subsequent escape, with the falling action being the murder of the Doctor and recovery of the apple. And before someone points out and asks why Cal is suddenly okay with the Assassins, there are two key scenes that plant seeds with a third that I think makes it all finally click together if it hadn't already. First we have the scene with his father, explaining that like him his mother had blood that was not their own, indicating that his mother was also a descendant of Agular and that the father was a descendant of some other Assassin. At the end of this scene we see Cal misunderstanding the meaning, or just generally hurt by a life without his mother, and in anger wants to get revenge by ending the creed, as he still believes his mother to have been murdered, but the seed of the truth has been planted. The second key scene is after Cal willingly goes into the animus and sees Aguilars love sacrifice herself for the mission, in roughly the same way that his mother was killed, planting the second seed. The Third scene is when he sees his mother dressed as an assassin. If it hadn't already, this was the final straw that put everything into perspective, how his mother was one of the creed and knowing what the Templars were trying to do, sacrificed herself to try and prevent them from finding the apple. This resolves Cals main issues with the Assassins and helps right him on which side really is the bad or at least incorrect side and which is the good guys. In my opinnion I also prefer the fact that not only is it an AC story never told but that it had so much set in the modern era. I think the reason that it works for the games for so much of it to be focused on the time period, is because you are spending all of your time enjoying this 30+hr story immersing yourself in the world. I think had they try to go for such an approach, it could have caused issues in future movies trying to explain how this was all just the past, and also would have had trouble not just being another "Egyptian/Middle ages/Peroiod" based fantasy movie. Not only does setting up everything in the modern era provide you more avenues to go down in the future (like exploring the lives of some of Cals other ancestors), but it also allows you to spend more time in those periods, having already laid out the foundation of what all is going on, with things then melding back into the modern day to continue a forward moving story rather than just a bunch of Assassins creed themed period based fantasy movies. I'm also fine with it being a story never before told, because not only does it bring something new for fans of the games (which still many seemed to have enjoyed the story even though it wasn't "game cannon") but going back to that flexibility, it allows you in the future to bring in these known characters and stories and do them justice and work them into the overall story, rather than just telling a cool story. TL:DR Many people seem to have just missed the explanations for many things, the character arc of Cal is decently well written, its a good movie though not perfect, original story and not retold is preferred because otherwise the movie/movies would have been single installment period piece fantasy movies with at best a seemingly diluted overarching plot like the games, and being mainly set in the modern era is fine because it was meant to be a foundational movie setting everything up for future installments.

I also like the movie, it was a good introductory movie for the franchise. Shame, there's no news about the sequel. I think the strange animus equipment was a good setup knowing that (in the next movies) it will be portable like we see in the ac games. The bleeding effect was a great portrayal because movie goers will not understand how cal know how to do those moves and being able to do the leap of faith and other assassin's moves. Overall, not a perfect movie (I don't even know how someone can define "perfect" objectively) but a great introductory movie to the franchise

If they had a 2-3 opening explaining the assassin and Templar fight thorought the history like just a quick animation showing how it was founded by bayek and aya and why it was founded to what they were doing and quick summary of how everything change in the 2000s when the Dubai HQ got attacked, it would fix a lot of the issues and left room for them to really expand on why they are imprisoned and what the Templars are capable of. I know the movie came out before origins but only by a year or 2, I reckon it would’ve generated so much hype for origins and would work in ubisofts favour.

This is clearly following the same story as Desmond (modern times) and Ezio (Renaissance Italy) and in the game you spend 95% of your time in the actual interesting story of Ezio growing up literally from death to birth and not with Desmond. The real magic of those games is an interesting historical setting and an actual interesting story of a man who loses his whole family and going on a journey to become one of the most legendary assassins ever

Assassin’s Creed has so much content and story that it really needs it own show, not a two-hour movie. They should also use the content from the games, one season per character. You’d have Altair, Ezio, Connor, Edward, Arno, Shay, and Jacob + Evie all as separate seasons. Even throw in Bayek maybe as the first season to really set things up. There’s plenty of money to be made if they don’t rush it and do it well. The success of The Last of Us really showed that video game adaptations can go well.

It was an awesome side story, and cool to see the Assassins score a legit MAJOR victory over the Templars, in the Modern Day... despite being on the brink of extinction. There is exposition dumps and then there are WORTHWHILE exposition dumps! As someone who had played nearly every game up until that point, even I was confused as to what the heck was going on. And why? Just make an adaptation of either the first one or the Ezio games and be done with it! At least if that one failed, we could say it was an issue with the source material. In this movie's case, I can't even make that argument cause it was such a stupid attempt at an adaptation!

Except it wasn't... at least not in the way you think. It was a different story in the same way that Black Flag was a different story from 1... and 3 was a different story from 2. It was set in the same universe, and canon to the games. It was just following a different character... reliving the life of a different ancestor.

I honestly didn’t think the movie was that bad. I think it lead to heavy on the modern day stuff when everyone realistically plays AC for the historical content. They should of had the brotherhood plot where we get the modern day stuff at the start and at the end of the game maybe one point in the middle and the rest is the historical plot.

I think a big mistake mightve been touching on the modern day character too much instead of the Assassin they are livng in through the animus. from what i remeber, the first game doesnt tell you much about Desmond but instead interweives his story with the larger Altiar and Ezio portions and you slowly get to know him through 5 games. i think they shouldve done a similar thing for the movie cuase we arent playing/watching for this guy from 2011 we are interested because of the historical aspects and the intesting looking assassins which we are then taken on this larger much crazier journey told in small portions. I also dont remeber the movie featuring any of the gods or more fictional advanced society aspects that the games have which made it just boring.

This movie would have been the best video game adapted movie ever, had they stayed in the past 80% of the movie and not had the silly present day flashbacks during combat scenarios. Once Cal went into the Animus, the movie should have been all about the Spanish Inquisition up until the final 15 minutes of it, instead of the boring sections of him in the Abstergo detention center with all the other would be assassin ancestors. In order to do AC right in live action, it has to be a series instead of a film, and have it sort of be like the old show Quantum Leap, where each season the protagonist enters the Animus memories of a new Assassin and time period and lives out their lives and quest to fight the Order of Ancient/Templar order. To the audience we would see the main actor, but when they do reflections in the mirror or show the point of view from other characters perspective then it should be the real assassins face we see. With a series, that would allow not only deep character development of the main protagonist, time period and backstory on why the Assassins are fighting the order. It would also allow them to do some modern day sequences without it preoccupying the entire movie like we saw in this film.

Tbh tho, it could've worked if only more than what we know of aguilar was shown in the movie. Things like whats his reason for hunting the templars, and who are his targets? How he stumbled upon the piece of eden? How he became an assassin?. Things like these werent answered in the movies. If it was answered, then the audience's response would be different

The problem was they focosed more on the modern day story than the past ! I whant it to see assassins in hood assassinating with hidden blade and free running on rooftops and less of the present story with guns, the animus is NOT like THAT! They should of made the past life of aguilar more and some cutscene about cal getting in or out of the animus and boom! It would be better!

  • @ThatFanBoyGuy

I didn't mind the fact that they made a new story within the Assassin's Creed universe. After all, if they simply made a movie adaptation of a game, everybody would be complaining about the liberties they took, like "They forgot this part" or "They changed this part." The problem was that they tried to make a full Assassin's Creed game, which ranges from 8 hours to 12 hours, averaging 10 hours, of gameplay time, and condense it down to 2 hours. To make matters to worse, to make it consumable for people who watch movies but don't play games, they had to explain everything about the universe, like Abstergo, the Animus, the Assassins, the Templars and the Apple of Eden. Again, in a game, this is explained over the 8-12 hours of gameplay, yet the movie had to shove it into a 2 hour movie, while still having a unique plot.

I mean they really should have all the people that make any major decisions on the movie play the games. At least all of them up to black flag or even rogue. Honestly they could literally copy revelations or black flag with some good cinematic scenes and I would love it. I would love to watch the game as a movie and I think that's what a lot of people desire. They would love to see these actors actually playing the parts that we all played in the games like a ship scene where their taking down a fort and there is also two ships they have they take down and their ducking and dodging morter shots the entire time couldn't we all relate to that and enjoy watching that on our TV screens as a movie??

I liked the movie, thought it was decent. Also want to see Callum Lynch again in the future since he is also the descendant of Arno. I mean the movie is canon. And it doesn’t have to be another movie, could be a cameo or a main character to a new AC game. Despite all that, what I want to see is Elijah Miles continuing the legacy of the greatest lineage of assassins. I mean, boy is already a sage and iirc helped kill Juno, when will we see the boy.

One of the problems with this movie was that it tried to create a movie "for everyone" rather than for the fan base that was already there. And that seems to happen a lot with adaptions. So the movie didn't include a lot of the elements players of the video game franchise would expect and changed some elements in a simplified or watered down version. Also, still salty about their version of the animus, I get it's more dynamic the way they did it, but the animus being a fancy table/bed/chair worked in the game because so much of the action was in the past. Anyway, if they had instead written the movie closer to the source material, even with a new character and period setting, they could have made a fantastic movie that would have satisfied the fan base as well as attract people who are generally into action, sci-fi, and historical fantasy type films. I left the movie confused because the present day plot was confusing.

IMO the movie has really cool visuals and actions scenes, and the essence of the franchise is there... but many silly concepts are handled with such level of seriousness that disconnects anyone who is watching from what is actually happening. For example: The whole leap of faith mechanic that overcharges and almost breaks the animus... IT'S A F-ING JUMP. Yeah, a fancy and skilful jump, but in the AC games it's just treated as another move, sometimes a bit of a ritual... but not like a superpower, not something with such emanating energy that can break a simulation... With some minor adjustments I think it could've been a fantastic movie.

Why not an anthology-limited series TV show? where they show a story fully told from the perspective of the Abstertgo experiment subjects while reliving their ancestors' re-living the memories inside the Animus without them noticing they are in a lab, and maybe another one that shows how the Animus was built and patented by Abstergo. Because honestly Assasin's Creed has a huge universe divided into 2 timelines past & present, and it's too much material for a single film.
