Why Tesla's vehicles are successful: Jay Leno

The host of Jay Leno's garage says he's seen Europe's electric vehicles, but they fall short against Tesla. He says Tesla CEO Elon Musk knew what he was doing and pursued EVs aggressively, making him one of the most successful CEOs in the space. He joins Shepard Smith to discuss. Jay Leno said he thinks the genius of Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk is that “he was building the infrastructure as he was building the vehicle.”
“Even today, a lot of the major manufacturers build an electric car, but, oh, where do you charge it?” Leno told the “The News with Shepard Smith” during a Friday evening interview. “Elon was smart, when he started, he knew this idea would work so he built charging stations.”
Electric car maker Tesla will be the newest member of the S&P 500 on Monday at its full float-adjusted market capitalization weight.
2020 has been a monster year for Tesla, the sixth largest company in the world - its stock is up about 700% this year. The host of CNBC’s “Jay Leno’s Garage” said he was confident that Tesla would be able to sustain its dominance in electric vehicles and added that he’s seen electric cars from Europe fall short.
“They don’t have the range of the Tesla,” Leno said. “They don’t, because Tesla leads the field. We seem to have this inferiority complex that somehow things in Europe are better than things built here.”
Leno gave host Shepard Smith examples of superior American innovation, including General Motors’ Corvette, which he said rivals the Lamborghini and Ferrari and is only $60,000.
Highlighting America’s dominance in private industry, he pointed to Musk’s success when it came to the space industry.
“The fact that Elon can send a rocket into space and land it back on Earth for, what, a tenth of the price of the U.S. government?” Leno said. “Well, that’s what private industry is supposed to do - cheaper, faster, more efficient.”
Leno suggested that those who want to feel the “rumble of a car underneath them” should “buy another car.” He acknowledged that he loves Ferraris, Ford Cobra, and Lamborghinis on the weekend, but that they’re just not practical to sit in traffic and drive locally.
“If you’re in a quiet, electric vehicle, you’re not polluting and you’re saving,” said Leno. “When I want to have fun, I’ll take out my 1960 Triumph TR3 and bomb around, but in terms of everyday vehicles, you can’t beat it [the Tesla].”

I bought a 81 VW Scirocco in 1990 that was two years. I was 25 at the time. It was the funnest and best handling car. I had countless fun times on Mulholland drive. I have had many cars since than. None has given me as much pleasure of driving since. Till I bought a Tesla Model 3. If there is a reason to buy an EV, it’s to put a smile on your face when you push on the accelerator pedal. Musk has done what GM and Ford have been struggling to do for decades. To make driving fun again. They lost that spirit, and Tesla brought it back.

"Chill" mode helps too, you can set speed limit w/o valet mode (that locks glovebox etc.) Once you get used to having fine control w/ your right foot though, go off chill mode... you still have very fine, gentle acceleration control when you want, but stomp on it and ZOOOOM you launch! That's one of the most impressive bits for me re Tesla, how good, smooth, fine and precise the throttle AND regen braking (1-pedal) control is. There is no awkward switchover between regen and braking; regen has the same fine smooth control w/ the pedal up, as acceleration w/ pedal down, so w/ a good foot, no harsh speed changes. It's practically fly-by-wire, or actually, seems drive-by-thought... much safer, when I subconsciously start to lift my foot at uncertain situations, the car already starts braking... no delay moving my foot to brake pedal.

You hit on a key point about owning a Tesla and driving in stop-and-go traffic: 90% of my daily driving is in traffic, and I'm going max acceleration all day (without speeding). It's way, way more fun than a gas guzzling muscle car, mainly because it allows you to race from stop to stop. Not to mention that many times the result of driving this way is that I make it to and through more yellow lights, *legally*, than other cars on the road, easily leaving most cars behind at red lights.

@@bannor99 Most of these networks let you charge Teslas also, it's not a surprise since Teslas are 80 percent of EV market in the US, makes business sense to cater to them. So now you have Tesla plus other networks to choose from as a Tesla customer. That aside, most of these third party charging solutions are 2-4 stalls, the average for one network was 1.9 stalls per station, absolutely ridiculous. The average was closer to 3-4. Tesla's supercharger stations average close to 10 stalls per station. So on the map you would see all these third party locations, but you cannot be safe planning your trip based on them, because you could easily run into a 2 stall station that's one or both out of order, or one that's occupied by two EVs already for the next hour, or they charge something ridiculous and you need a membership, the list goes on, it's still in the teething stage, so in practical terms Tesla is the only game in town for now. That might change in a few years, but it's how things are today, if you want an EV for long distance travel, Tesla practically the only game in town in North America. For now.

Tesla on the other hand is a true electric technology leader. Not surprisingly, they have a 10+ years head start 🤣. If they get their build quality up further and are able to compete with lets say Audi, quality wise they can win just about all segments on all things that matter. Very cool! As an avid car enthusiast, I applaud Tesla and other companies going electric. Instant torque, low maintenance, zero emissions, what's not to love about the new normal coming out of electricity? Technology has been able to catch up to gas engines and surpass them in due time. A vast majority of people buy cars solely for transportation, not for the enthusiasm. We can see from sales statistics from the Accord and Camry being the most sold cars. So if those people buy more electric cars, that's a huge portion of carbon emissions that we lose. I like the path that we are on with Tesla leading the pack. Ford, GM (Cadillac) are going electric and they are the most successful companies in America for car production. Times change. It's ok to change with them too.

PS for folks curious how much home EV charging costs: 50% less than gas! Teslas go 3-4miles/KWH, so ~3000KWh for 10k miles/yr. (Other brands are not as efficient.) At 17c/kwh (your utility price may vary), that is... $500. Per YEAR ( for 10k miles), or bit over $40/month. (and, of course, FREE if you have right rooftop solar!) Gas cars, even 30MPG, can be over $1-1.5k/year ($3.50/gal) "Level2" 240V home charging is best, Teslas get ~30miles per hour @32A, so full recharge in 10hrs. Regular 120V 15A outlet is slow "Level1", more like 3-5 miles per hour, so... under 60miles overnight. Enough for small daily commutes. Tesla Supercharging is more, typically around 30c/kwh, so... check, but, still cheaper 'fill-up' than gas! (

Jay Leno has really become an American legend, especially over the past 10 years. He's such a genuine dude. 2nd greatest living American. Tom Brady is the 1st.

Yanks have overlooked that this amazing entrepreneur is South African. Secondly Tesla have amazing technology however quality has to improve (based on my experience) in order to compete long term with the European and Japanese brand.

I had the same feeling about Tesla being noiseless when I first test drove the S. Now I can’t wait to buy a Tesla Y.

Warren Buffet has said that if you have done your research correctly, then the time to sell is never. Tesla is an investment not a trade. I am not selling a single share.

Jay might be the smartest financial mind that CNBC has on their payroll. Results speak, the guys has worked two jobs, banked one, lived on the other, and still manages to be super yet quietly charitable.
